Chapter Twenty-Six: She's Sick

The next day, when it was slightly cool, Qiaolian went out through the back door.

Arriving at the back gate of the neighboring courtyard, the anxiety of yesterday had vanished.

She knocked on the door a few times, and it was quickly opened. The person who came in was the same guard from yesterday.

However, the guards were not as enthusiastic as yesterday, and did not take her in to see Gu Songhan.

"The general instructed me to inform you that the person has been found and is now at the Yunlai Inn. You can rest assured and take Sixth Miss there!"

Qiaolian should have been happy to find Aunt Lan, but she felt as if a thread was binding her heart.

She forced a smile. "Thank you, General!"

He then staggered back to the Marquis's residence.

Before even stepping into Jiang Segu's boudoir, one could hear bursts of coughing coming from inside.

She hurried into the house and saw Jiang Segu's cheeks were flushed, her lips were chapped, and she was leaning against Madam Hou, coughing uncontrollably. She quickly went over and asked, "What happened? Where is Qiaohe? How did she manage to work last night?"

Qiaohe was leading Doctor Zhang in.

After examining the patient, Dr. Zhang diagnosed it as a case of pathogenic wind entering the body and catching a chill. He said that taking a few doses of herbal medicine to induce sweating would be sufficient. "However, you must be careful not to be exposed to cold winds for the next few days!"

After seeing Doctor Zhang out, Qiaohe ordered someone to take the prescription to buy medicine before returning to her room!

Under the barrage of questions from Qiaolian and Mama Hou, Qiaohe looked aggrieved and said, "It's not that I didn't take good care of you, Miss; it's that you've been making a mess of things for yourself!"

Yesterday, on such a cold day, the girl ordered her to quietly draw water from the well and then open the window. The girl, dressed in thin clothes, sat in the bathtub filled with well water and sat there for an hour.

Even the strongest body couldn't withstand that!

"Alright, don't blame Qiaohe. I have my reasons for doing this! Mama Hou, go and tell the old lady that I am ill and probably won't be able to go out today!"

Qiaolian, go to the Yunlai Inn outside the manor and apologize to Aunt Lan for me. If Aunt Lan is in a hurry to find a house, you can go with her. If not, you can come back.”

After the two left, Jiang Segu said to Qiaohe, "Go and have someone invite Third Grandmother here!"

She's sick and can't go to Baoding, but she still has her mother!

If her grandmother asked her mother to go, her mother would naturally have no way to refuse. She could only use her illness as an excuse to keep her mother from leaving!

If Grandmother were to send someone with Mother's help, given the current state of the Yin family, Third Uncle would certainly not come to the capital when Fourth Uncle and Little Uncle need him to help support the family!

Besides, Liang Shaojie is blind. Even if Hua Tuo were alive, he couldn't cure him, let alone his third uncle!

When the time comes, my third uncle will take pity on Liang Shaojie and give him some medicinal herbs, and that will be the end of it!

When Third Grandma heard that her beloved daughter was sick, she rushed over without even having time to comb her hair; she just put on an overcoat!

"What's wrong now? You were fine yesterday! But you kicked off the covers again last night? Or did you eat something you shouldn't have last night? You're a grown man, why can't you be more careful!"

"Mother, I'm sick, can't you nag me less?"

Jiang Segu's throat was so dry it felt like it was on fire, and it hurt terribly. He only managed to say two sentences before his eyes started to redden!

Grandma Jiang felt sorry for her and said, "Stop talking!"

He turned and instructed Qiaohe to pour water, then personally fed Jiang Segu. He then asked Qiaohe, "Did Doctor Zhang come to see you? What did he say?"

Qiaohe repeated what Dr. Zhang had said, and Grandma Jiang San murmured "Amitabha" before feeling a little relieved.

Jiang Segu endured the pain in her throat and said in a hoarse voice, "Mother, Grandmother is afraid that she will ask you to go to Baoding to find Third Uncle to examine the eyes of that person in the front yard. Please don't go!"

"Alright, alright, Mother won't go. Don't say anything! It hurts Mother's heart to hear you say that!"

“If Mother doesn’t go, Grandmother will definitely blame you… Fortunately, I’m sick, so you have an excuse not to go… But you have to send someone to Baoding before Grandmother speaks up…” She paused, swallowing to suppress the sharp pain in her throat, “Remember to make sure you tell them not to call Third Uncle!”

Seeing her daughter pause several times after only a few sentences, Grandma Jiang felt truly sorry for her. "It would be good to call your third uncle over, let him take a look at you..."

"Absolutely not! Cough cough cough!"

Jiang San's words provoked Jiang Segu to raise his voice suddenly, but also caused him to cough violently!

"Water, quickly bring me water!"

While patting Jiang Segu's back, Grandma Jiang San fed him water and also sent someone to get some silver elixir candy for him to suck on.

The moment the Yindancao candy touches your mouth, a refreshing coolness washes over you, slightly easing the pain in your throat!

Jiang Segu immediately added, "Mother, you must not let Third Uncle go to the capital! I will tell you the reason after I recover!"

"Okay, okay, I'll do whatever you say, just don't say anything!"

Jiang Segu was finally relieved when he saw that Grandma Jiang San had agreed!

Not long after, Aunt Hou returned, and Aunt Zhou followed. They inquired about the illness, said a few words about taking good care of oneself, and then glanced at Grandma Jiang.

Grandma Jiang understood, "Mother Zhou, please go back and inform Mother that I will send someone to Baoding to invite my younger brother here. Mother need not worry!"

After doing so, Zhou's mother returned to Zhaotai Courtyard to report back.

"When this old servant went to visit the Sixth Miss, it happened that the Third Mistress was also there. Before this old servant could say anything, the Third Mistress said that she would send someone to Baoding to invite the Third Uncle. So this old servant couldn't mention that the Old Madam had asked the Third Mistress to go to Baoding in person!"

Although Old Madam Jiang looked listless while lying on the bed, she was not particularly dispirited.

Upon hearing Zhou's mother's words, a cold glint flashed in his eyes, then he smiled faintly, "This time, the third daughter-in-law is quite clever!"

After a while, she asked again, "Where's Azi? How is Azi's health?"
