Principal Mo and the second-grade Chinese teacher had never competed with Shen Qingqing before, and Principal Mo had only heard Chen Zesong mention that the child was very fast at solving problems.
But I never expected Shen Qingqing to come out so quickly!
Of all the students in the competition, she was the first to come out. The other students' teachers were both surprised and anxious when they saw someone come out, and looked into the examination room.
"You, how did you get out here?" The second-grade Chinese teacher couldn't help but ask as she looked at Shen Qingqing walking up to them.
Shen Qingqing's eyes were bright. "I'll come out as soon as I'm done."
After pausing for a moment, he added under the gaze of Principal Mo and the second-grade Chinese teacher, "I checked it twice more."
"You can do all of these? And you got them all right?" The second-grade Chinese teacher was a little incredulous. She had always taught lower grades and had never led students to participate in this kind of competition before, so this was the first time she had received a test paper for such a competition.
She didn't know the answers to many of the questions on those pages.
After all, not everyone reads so many literary classics, and language arts teachers are no exception.
They focus more on preparing lessons, teaching students well, and helping young students establish correct values. Teaching and nurturing students together constitute their daily work.
Shen Qingqing thought about it carefully for a moment: "I guess I can do them all, but I can't be sure if I did them all correctly."
After all, it's hard to know what the grading criteria are for subjective questions.
But to Principal Mo and the second-grade Chinese teacher, her answer sounded like she was just doing whatever she felt she could, without any absolute certainty.
The two exchanged a glance, both seeing a hint of helplessness in each other's eyes, but they really couldn't say anything to Shen Qingqing, who was only seven years old.
The second-grade Chinese teacher could only reassure her, "It's okay, it's good that you've finished! Most of the participants are older brothers and sisters, they're definitely better than you..."
Shen Qingqing blinked, her eyes clear and innocent as she nodded.
I thought to myself: Yes, older kids are definitely more capable. I've lived for a total of 32 years across my two lifetimes, so of course I'm more capable than these fifth and sixth graders!
Anyway, this is what you said, not what I said.
Although we came out early, we can't leave early. We have to wait until everyone has come out and been checked before we can leave the Overseas Chinese Middle School.
After all the fuss was over, it was past midnight. Principal Mo took them to a nearby restaurant for a nice meal before heading home.
Anyone who gets motion sickness knows how agonizing it is to travel by car after a big meal.
When Shen Qingqing returned to school, her face was so pale it looked almost like a skeleton.
Principal Mo asked the second-grade Chinese teacher if she needed a ride home, but Shen Qingqing waved her hand and simply borrowed a phone to call her mother.
Upon receiving the call, Li Xunli, disregarding the pottery she had already half-finished, hurriedly washed her hands and rode her bicycle to school.
However, the journey from the porcelain kiln to Wangling Primary School takes ten minutes longer than the journey from the Shen family to Wangling Primary School.
When she arrived, Shen Qingqing had already vomited once and was being held and patted on the back by her second-grade Chinese teacher, who was trying to calm the nauseous feeling.
Li Xunli rushed to the school and was led to the first-grade class by Principal Mo. There she saw her own daughter, looking listless and pale, huddled in the teacher's arms.
"Qingqing!" Li Xunli called out cautiously.
Shen Qingqing felt a sour taste in her mouth. She looked up and saw her mother. She stood up, holding onto the teacher's shoulder. After waving to Principal Mo and the teacher, she frowned and leaned on her mother.
Seeing her daughter, who usually loved to be all lovey-dovey with her, looking so listless, Li Xunli felt a pang of heartache.
This daughter was their first child. When Li Xunli and Shen Rongzhou first got pregnant, they didn't know. They mistakenly trusted a quack doctor and took stomach medicine for a month or so without getting better. They only found out they were pregnant when they went to a big hospital for a checkup.
However, the doctor said that the medications they had taken might cause birth defects in the child. The couple were shocked and frightened, and hesitated about whether to keep the child.
In the end, Shen Rongzhou made the decision to take a gamble and use all his salary to support Li Xunli's health so that she could safely give birth to the child.
It was also thanks to Shen Qingqing's own hard work that she was born fair-skinned and beautiful, and within a few days she was already putting her little fists into her mouth.
Because of what happened during her pregnancy, Shen Rongzhou and Li Xunli always showed Shen Qingqing a lot of love and tolerance.
But their healthy and lively appearance made them very happy.
Now that she gets so carsick, Li Xunli can't help but wonder if she was born with a congenital deficiency.
Li Xunli anxiously asked Principal Mo to help Shen Qingqing onto the back of the bicycle. She called out to Shen Qingqing several times to make sure she held on tight and didn't fall off. She hurried home without daring to go too fast or too slow.
As soon as she arrived home, Shen Qingqing vomited again with a "whoosh." The stomach acid surged up, causing physiological tears to well up in her eyes.
The feeling of a whirlpool constantly churning inside her stomach was so intense it made her wish she were dead.
Even though she was reborn, she has been quite proactive in adapting to riding in a car, and her uncle often drives her home.
Aside from feeling a little uncomfortable at first, Shen Qingqing adapted well in the later episodes and assumed she was fine.
Who knew that a trip to the city would completely ruin her life!
Li Xunli quickly went inside and poured a cup of hot tea for Shen Qingqing to rinse her mouth, using the aroma of the tea to mask the taste in her mouth and prevent Shen Qingqing from being irritated and vomiting again.
While rinsing her mouth, Shen Qingqing swallowed the tea, trying to suppress the churning feeling in her stomach with the new drink.
Unfortunately, it was no use. The sour feeling in her mouth kept urging her to saliva. Shen Qingqing felt so uncomfortable that her mind went numb. She pressed her stomach against the bicycle seat, trying to use external force to suppress the discomfort in her stomach.
Li Xunli wanted to carry her inside to lie down, but Shen Qingqing waved her hand to indicate that she didn't want to move.
Li Xunli had no choice but to clean up the vomit at the door. After she finished, she saw that Shen Qingqing's eyes were closed. So she called Li Xunjin and asked him to come and help carry the child inside.
If Shen Qingqing were still conscious, Li Xunli could let her lie on her back and carry her in, but now Shen Qingqing doesn't look conscious at all, and Li Xunli can't lift her at all.
Li Xunjin arrived quickly. After helping to carry Shen Qingqing inside, he also helped Li Xunli clean up Shen Qingqing's vomit-stained clothes.
After all that fuss, both adults were exhausted.
They thought Shen Qingqing would be fine once she had rested, but unexpectedly she developed a high fever that very night.
