Chapter 8 There's No More in the Pot
Nan Nan woke up and forgot about the fried cakes.
When he saw the beef, he exclaimed in surprise, "Mom, it's meat!"
"Yes, it's meat. Does Nan Nan like to eat meat?"
“I love to eat!”
Nan Nan nodded heavily and puffed her little face to blow into the bowl of beef soup in front of her.
After blowing it, she tilted her head and asked, "Mom, is this bowl all for Nannan? Did brother Xiaojun and sister Xiaodan eat it?"
Song Rui stroked the hair around her ears with concern, feeling uncomfortable inside.
My daughter is only four years old now. When she eats, she subconsciously considers her eight-year-old cousin and ten-year-old cousin first.
It was her fault as a mother.
Thinking of how her daughter had retreated again and again in her previous life, she felt even more upset.
Song Rui could understand why her daughter never contacted her again after she went abroad.
My daughter has been so obedient and sensible since she was young. She rarely causes any worry to us and she never makes any requests.
She always habitually gives in to the brothers and sisters around her and never complains when she is treated unfairly.
The only thing she wants to do is go to college and be exposed to a wider world.
How could she not feel resentful when she was forced to give in to her daughter's only request?
It's her incompetence as a mother.
"Nannan, this is yours. Mom cooked it specially for our family. Your brother Xiaojun has his own parents. If he doesn't have any, he can ask his parents for some. There's no need for Nannan to give him yours."
"But... Brother Xiaojun didn't eat it, but Nannan ate it. Nannan and mom will be scolded by grandma."
Song Rui patiently explained to her, "Grandma may scold you, but that doesn't mean she is right. It only means that grandma's heart is crooked. Next time she scolds you for this kind of thing, you must tell mom. Mom will support you."
Nan Nan seemed to understand, "Mom, what is support?"
Song Rui smiled and pinched her waist with her hands behind her.
Nan Nan straightened her back subconsciously.
"See, this is support. Mom will support you from now on."
Nan Nan giggled happily and fell into Song Rui's arms, "Okay, Nan Nan has mom's support!"
"And your father, me."
Ling Ye pushed the door open and continued the sentence naturally.
Glancing at the table, he snorted, "You're eating without waiting for me? You two have no conscience."
There was still some anger on his face, and he looked even more ferocious.
Song Rui knew she was in the wrong, smiled sheepishly, and hurried to serve him rice and soup.
After all, he made that scene tonight because of the mother and daughter.
The food was placed in front of him and his daughter snuggled into his arms. Ling Ye's expression looked better.
Ordinary families don’t have so many rules about not talking while eating or sleeping.
Song Rui asked: "What exactly is the story about the special treatment?"
Ling Ye scooped up a mouthful of soup, warmed his stomach and said, "No need to say much, Dad agreed, from now on you and Nan Nan can cook for yourselves, I will try to give you more every month, as for what I gave to mom and dad before, I won't give so much in the future, I will give as much as big brother gives."
After all, their family doesn't eat in the main house, so the money is simply used to show filial piety to the old couple.
Even if it was only the same amount as what the eldest brother gave, their family still gave the most.
Song Rui knew that Ling Ye was a generous person.
He was generous to the mother and daughter, and also to his own parents, and did not care too much.
If he hadn't been really angry today, Song Rui estimated that he would still give her the same amount as before and would not pay less.
But it’s better this way. Maybe he will spend less and have more left in his pocket, and he won’t be like in his previous life.
In fact, Song Rui had no idea what he did for a living.
Ling Ye is a man of integrity and a male chauvinist. He doesn't like women interfering in his outside affairs.
In the past, she always had to support her younger brother, so she was too embarrassed to ask about his affairs.
She was afraid that he would misunderstand her and think she wanted money again.
Song Rui only knew that the risk was not small.
Otherwise, things like what happened in my previous life wouldn’t have happened.
Song Rui still remembers that when the news came that he was arrested, his son Xiaojun was less than one year old.
He Jinyan shouted in the yard like a loud speaker and told Nan Nan that her father was going to be shot. Nan Nan was so scared that she cried all night and fell ill the next day.
My daughter is sick and my son needs someone to take care of him.
No one from the Ling family helped her. She was busy taking care of two children by herself and was so exhausted that she had no time to take care of anything else.
As for Ling Ye’s affairs, we can only rely on Ling Jianguo and Ling Feng.
She also heard from them that Ling Ye had a fight with someone outside because of business matters, and he hit the person so hard that he was crippled.
As for what kind of business it was, Ling Jianguo couldn't explain it clearly.
Now, Song Rui is planning to divorce.
But seeing how good Ling Ye was to her daughter, she still hoped that he would not follow the same path she had in her previous life.
After thinking for a while, she lowered her head and said, "As for money, you don't have to give me too much. I can earn it. You should be careful when you are out there."
The beef on Ling Ye's chopsticks fell back into the bowl, creating ripples on the soup.
Song Rui added uncomfortably, "Otherwise Nan Nan will be worried."
"Um."
Ling Ye responded, and then said: "You don't have to cook for them in the future. Spend more time to take care of Nan Nan."
"Um."
Song Rui also responded and lowered her head to drink the soup.
Nan Nan looked left and right, then lowered her head and kept silent.
The room suddenly became uncomfortably quiet.
Ling Ye remembered something and said, "Is there a lot of beef soup? If there is a lot, send some to mom and dad. They didn't have time to cook today."
"Okay, I'll go right away."
She was still willing to spend this last meal.
I found two newly bought large bowls, cleaned them, and used one for soup and the other for rice.
The hot beef soup is clear in color, and the beef is stewed in shaky pots. The aroma wafts all the way as you walk past.
When I entered the main house, Ling Jianguo was sitting on the kang, puffing on a cigarette.
Ling Feng frowned and remained silent
He Jinyan was still wiping away tears.
No one in the family said a word, except Ling Xiaojun, who was making a fuss and saying he was hungry.
Seeing Song Rui coming in with just enough food for the old couple, He Jinyan turned around and slapped the noisy Ling Xiaojun on the butt.
"Hungry, hungry, hungry! Why are you hungry? Your father is incompetent, and even my mother and I are bullied! Don't eat anymore from now on! I'd rather starve to death!"
After being hit, Ling Xiaojun stood on the floor and cried loudly.
When Xu Chunying saw this, she felt distressed and quickly took the food that Song Rui brought and handed it to Ling Xiaojun.
"Why are you telling this to the child? With us two old people around, how can Xiaojun not have food to eat?"
"My dear grandson, don't cry. Look, beef!"
Xu Chunying gave all the food to Xiaojun, and Xiaojun stopped crying when he saw the beef.
Serve it on the table and enjoy it.
Xu Chunying stopped Song Rui who was about to leave, "Old Third's, please send some more. Your father and I haven't eaten yet!"
Song Rui turned around and smiled, "Sorry, Mom, that's all. There's no more in the pot."
They gave gifts to the old couple as a way of showing filial piety.
If they don’t eat it, they can give it to their grandchildren, of course.
But so much for meals.
"Hey you..."
Xu Chunying wanted to say something, but Song Rui simply turned around and left.
There is no shortage of rice, flour, and oil in the main house, isn't it just that no one is cooking?
She didn't believe that they would starve to death without her.
