Chapter 29: Become a Disciple

"To make you give up, I'll beat you!"

"If there's no water in the oil, stay three meters away from the tractor. Don't be so bold as to say you can fix a car."

The oil was pumped out.

Let it sit for a while as Ruan Tang requested.

Oil and water do not mix.

Oil is lighter than water, so after a while, the diesel froze.

Yang Wannian turned the bucket over, and the diesel froze into chunks and slid out.

At the bottom layer, the water formed a thick layer of ice.

"Wow! Ruan Zhiqing can really cure the tractor!" the children cheered.

Little Brother Ji raised his head proudly, "How could my sister-in-law be wrong!"

The children clamored for Ruan Tang to be their sister-in-law, but were beaten up by their brothers. They couldn't let their wives hear this, otherwise their lives would be difficult.

Yang Wannian, however, refused to believe it: "This is impossible. I personally kept the diesel, how could water be mixed in?"

Although old man Yang Wannian had a bad mouth, he was very careful and valued the tractor more than his own life. He would never make such a low-level mistake.

After the water was removed from the diesel, the tractor could run normally.

The way Yang Wannian looked at Ruan Tang changed. The teachers in their tractor training class couldn't determine what kind of disease it was just by looking at the smoke... So, Ruan Tang was really talented, and her talent was much higher than that of the teachers in the training class.

Yang Wannian suddenly thought and bowed to Ruan Tang: "Master! If you don't mind my age and stupidity, will you take me in and teach me?"

Ruan Tang quickly refused, "Uncle Yang, this, this is not possible, I just know a little bit about skin."

Yang Wannian thought Ruan Tang disagreed and kicked his son Yang Hui.

Yang Hui shouted loudly: "Master, please don't refuse. Just give my dad some guidance when you have time."

It was hard to refuse such a kind offer, so Ruan Tang reluctantly agreed.

After Yang Wannian brought back fertilizer from the county, he came to Ji's house.

According to the old customs, when becoming an apprentice, one had to prepare six gifts: celery, lotus seeds, red beans, red dates, longan, and meat strips.

But now that the Four Olds were being destroyed, Yang Wannian only brought two pieces of Wuxi meat to become his disciple.

Liu Weifang, who was pregnant, also came to join in the fun. She pushed Ruan Tang to sit at the top and accepted Yang Wannian's gift of apprenticeship.

"Uncle, Ruan Zhiqing is my good sister, but you are her disciple. How will our generations be calculated from now on?"

Yang Wannian's expression remained unchanged. "Go and call your aunt your sister first."

Yang Wannian was very conscious of being an apprentice, so he asked his son Yang Hui to fill the water tank first.

Ji Nanfeng braved the severe cold, rode his bicycle for two hours, and arrived home at ten o'clock.

"Ji Nanchuan, open the door."

Ruan Tang slept in a daze and heard Ji Nanfeng's voice outside.

When she put on her cotton jacket and hurried to open the door, she saw Ji Nanfeng standing at the door pushing a bicycle.

Ruan Tang stared blankly for a long time.

"Why, are you looking stupid?"

Ruan Tang came to her senses and rushed towards Ji Nanfeng.

Ji Nanfeng quickly dropped his bicycle and hugged the person in his arms, "So happy?"

Ruan Tang wrapped her legs around Ji Nanfeng's waist, held Ji Nanfeng's face, and kissed him hard.

"Yeah, I'm super happy."

Habit is a terrible thing. In just over a month, Ruan Tang got used to sleeping with Ji Nanfeng next to her.

That night, Ji Nanfeng was not at home. She slept in a daze and didn't know how many times she woke up.

The two of them stayed together for a while. Ji Nanfeng was afraid that Ruan Tang would be cold, so he carried her back to the house and put on an extra military coat for her, wrapping her up like a dumpling.

The two just expressed their love to each other and wished they could be together all the time.

Ji Nanfeng pinched Ruan Tang's red face and said, "Go back to the house first. I'll fill the water tank and come back."

"The water tank is full. Uncle Yang and Yang Hui filled it up today." Ruan Tang told Ji Nanfeng about Yang Wannian's apprenticeship today and dragged him back to the house.

Ji Nanfeng held the soft Ruan Tang in his arms and asked repeatedly, "Is there water in the diesel?"

Ruan Tang nodded. "Uncle Yang said he kept the diesel barrels safe. Every time he went back to the city, he carefully measured the diesel. There was no way water could have leaked in. If Uncle Yang didn't have some prestige in the village, people would have suspected him of reselling the diesel."

Ji Nanfeng suddenly remembered the scene he saw today in the repair department of the machinery factory, where many tractors were lined up waiting to be repaired.

"Ruan Tang, tell me, what happens if diesel is mixed with water?"

Ruan Tang's expression froze. When the two of them were together in private, Ji Nanfeng rarely called her by her full name so seriously.

"Water in the fuel tank can cause the car to stall frequently because the water can cause the fuel tank to rust, corrode, and age. In serious cases, it can even damage the engine."

The most important part of a tractor is its engine. A damaged engine means the tractor is scrapped.

Ji Nanfeng paused for a moment, then stroked Ruan Tang's hair intermittently, coaxing her: "Go to sleep. I might have to sleep in the duty room for the next few days."

"Is there something wrong with the machinery factory?"

Ji Nanfeng knew Ruan Tang was a smart man, tight-lipped, and wouldn't mince words. "I'm not sure yet. I just joined the machinery factory and don't have my own staff, so I'm afraid it will be difficult to investigate."

Ruan Tang hugged Ji Nanfeng comfortingly. "Don't worry, problems need to be solved slowly. If it's a tractor problem, I might be able to help a little."

Ji Nanfeng held Ruan Tang in his arms and said, "Go to sleep. I may need your help later. I will ask He Kun to come find you."

Before dawn, Ruan Tang cooked a bowl of chicken noodle soup. Ji Nanfeng ate up all the noodles and soup, then went to the city facing the rising sun in the east.

When Grandma Ji came out, Ji Nanfeng had already left.

"I heard Nan Feng came back last night?"

Ruan Tang smiled easily: "Yeah, as soon as I got back I thought about fetching water."

Grandma Ji took Ruan Tang's hand and asked, "Is Nan Feng in trouble?"

Ruan Tang was surprised how Grandma Ji could tell.

Grandma Ji patted the back of Ruan Tang's hand, her gaze far away. "When Nan Feng's father was injured, his mother was just like you, trying to hide it from me so I wouldn't worry. How could I not know if this person, living under the same roof every day, was thinking about me?"

"Don't be afraid, kid. Nan Feng faced live ammunition on the battlefield and still managed to come back alive. How could he not be able to handle a few office workers? We can just wait at home in peace."

Ruan Tang hugged Grandma Ji comfortingly. She knew that this insightful old lady had had a difficult life over the years.

"Grandma, I'm not afraid. If the leaders of the machinery factory bully Ji Nanfeng, I will stand guard at their door every day and scold them."

Grandma Ji was amused and said, "Okay, I'll go with you then."

Ever since Ji Nanfeng left in a hurry that day, he has never returned.

One count, it lasted for eighteen days.

Ji Nanfeng didn't come back for two consecutive days off.

Ruan Tang still carries her medicine box to see patients every day and lives her life as usual.
