“Mother, my family didn’t get many work points this year, and there’s not enough food for us. Besides, my older brother’s family has several people earning work points, don’t they have enough to eat?”
In my eldest brother's family, there are three able-bodied men, plus my mother and sixteen-year-old Song Xiaohong. Almost all of them can earn work points, and even the full amount.
It's hardly like a family. Two people earn full work points, but they have to support four mouths. They're lucky if they can even get enough to eat.
It's ironic that his mother came to ask him for food today.
But Madam Gu didn't want to hear what Song Yongren was saying at all. She just glared at him and said, "You mean you won't give it to me?"
"Song Yongren, you unfilial son! I raised you with great difficulty, and you won't even give me a little bit of food. Are you even human?"
"Your eldest brother's family has run out of food. As a brother, you didn't even think of helping your own family. How can you be so heartless?"
As soon as Gu heard that Song Yongren was not providing food, she began to accuse him, as if he had done something utterly rebellious.
Song Yongren could only smile bitterly. Did he not want to give it to them? He did want to.
He also wanted to be filial to his elderly mother and repay her for raising him, but he was willing but unable to do so!
His family is barely able to support themselves, so how can he possibly take care of his elderly mother?
Song Yongren could do nothing but smile bitterly. This was his mother; what else could he do?
Song Jianshe and Song Fang were both on high alert, their bodies tense. Song Jianshe was even more exaggerated, taking a small step with his right foot as if he were about to sprint.
Song Lili was stunned for a moment.
Is this grandmother not good enough? Otherwise, why would they do this?
Suddenly, Song Lili remembered that Song Yongren hadn't earned any work points for a month, and immediately felt that Song Jianshe and the others had their reasons for doing so.
Yes, what parents would forgo their son's work points just so they could have someone to take care of them, without considering their three grandchildren?
Thinking about it this way, it seems that this cheap grandma is quite something?
Song Lili, who hadn't had any particular thoughts before, suddenly became interested and wanted to know what this adoptive grandmother was going to do next.
She leaned against the mud wall with her arms crossed, not minding the dirt, and looked at Gu Shi with a leisurely air.
Seeing that Song Yongren wouldn't budge or move despite her scolding for a long time, Gu was furious and her words became even more... well, rude.
"Song Yongren, you beast! You actually want to watch your mother and brother starve to death! You heartless bastard, you ingrate!"
"I raised you with such hardship, and you don't even think about repaying me. You make excuses when I ask you for a little food. You heartless wretch!"
As she spoke, she seemed genuinely heartbroken, and she plopped down on the ground, wiping away her tears. It was a heartbreaking sight.
But Song Lili sneered inwardly. Repayment? Isn't serving at the bedside a form of repayment?
Heartless? Ungrateful wretch?
If that were the case, the Song family wouldn't have received so few work points this year, only a tiny bit of grain, and no one dared to eat more.
If they were truly heartless, they would have gone to their grandmother's house to freeload and ask for food.
Besides, Grandma doesn't only have one son, so how can she exploit her younger son for the sake of her older son?
My heart is completely biased towards her armpit.
Gu cried for a long time, but the Song family members did not react at all, although their feelings were different.
Song Lili watched indifferently, as if she were watching a completely unrelated spectacle.
Song Jianshe, however, kept a wary eye on Gu Shi. His grandmother had often taken things by herself in the past, and he was determined to stop her before she could do it.
Song Fang was simply scared. She was already frightened, and Gu Shi hadn't exactly treated her well, so she felt uncertain. Her grandmother had done the same thing before.
Song Yongren was indeed experiencing a mix of emotions: guilt, sadness, embarrassment, vulnerability, and even... ruthlessness.
His feelings were so complicated. He should have given food to his own mother, but if he did, his child would have nothing to eat. He was torn between two options, but he firmly insisted that he could not let his child go hungry.
Finally, they just watched the story unfold with blank expressions, reciting, singing, and acting.
After watching for a while, Song Lili couldn't help but purse her lips. Was it true that all the worst people used the same tactics? Was it all about throwing a tantrum?
Otherwise, why are you still yelling after all this time? Can't you see that no one is reacting?
Madam Gu also noticed that not only had no one spoken to her after she had been talking for so long, but not a single person had come to help her up. Humph, a bunch of ingrates.
Madam Gu felt that her bottom was too cold. It was the middle of winter, and she wasn't wearing thick cotton clothes. If she got sick, her eldest son would have to take care of her, and she might even need to take medicine.
That won't do. We absolutely can't let Yongli spend money. Money is so precious!
With that thought in mind, Gu got up on her own, her gaze lingering on Song Yongren and Song Fang's faces for several seconds.
After a long pause, he finally spoke again, "Yongren, your elder brother's family's grain has been stolen by bandits, and they have nothing to eat."
“Your family’s food is still fine, isn’t it? Share some with your older brother, otherwise his whole family won’t be able to survive.” He said, his voice choked with emotion.
Song Yongren was also distressed and said with difficulty, "Mother, it's not that I don't want to give you any, it's just that my family doesn't have any either. We were only allotted two bags of grain, and we've already eaten one bag a long time ago, so there's only half a bag left. Where am I supposed to get any more grain?"
If it were possible, would we need to make things so difficult?
Gu's eyes lit up; there was still more than half a bag left.
“You give half to your older brother, I won’t take it all, isn’t that fine?” Madam Gu replied quickly.
