Chapter Forty-Five: Heartache

Song Lili also pulled Song Fang and immediately turned around, saying to Guo Guihua, "Auntie, let's run quickly."

At this moment, of course we have to run as fast as we can.

Guo Guihua was nervous. She held Yang Mei's hand tightly. Without a man by her side, she felt uncertain.

But there were only children left here, and she was the only adult; she couldn't show her anxiety.

He nodded, "Okay, okay, let's go... let's go..." but his tone was somewhat unsteady.

Song Lili saw through it and said directly to Yang Mei, "Sister Yang Mei, you hold Auntie's hand and follow me and Fangfang."

Yang Mei nodded, "I understand."

Yang Mei was a bit better off. She had more contact with Song Lili, and for some reason, she subconsciously listened to Song Lili.

Song Lili instructed, "You must stay close. If we get separated, don't look for us, don't stop, and I won't look for you either."

"We'll go home on our own after the bandits leave." She was afraid that Guo Guihua would think she was an adult and insist on finding someone, which would cause trouble.

Yang Mei ran after Song Lili, saying as she ran, "I know, be careful."

Song Lili nodded, then pulled Song Fang along and charged forward.

She could break up with Yang Mei and her daughter, but Song Fang absolutely could not let go, otherwise Song Fang would collapse.

Since none of them were carrying anything, they were able to run at full speed and quickly overtook many people.

The more people she surpassed, the more at ease Song Lili felt.

The bandits chased after us to steal our belongings; as long as they could get what they wanted, they wouldn't keep chasing us.

The more people behind them, the safer they are.

Reaching the highest point of the mountain, Song Lili stopped, but did not let go of Song Fang's hand. She turned to look down at the foot of the mountain.

Song Yongren and the others hadn't caught up yet, and Song Lili didn't know where they were. She decided to wait there for a while.

They charged forward headfirst, and were at the very front right now; it wouldn't affect them later.

Yang Mei and Guo Guihua followed closely behind. W was also panting heavily, leaning on his knees to catch his breath.

She said haltingly, "Lili... how... how is she?" She didn't turn around, but asked Song Lili directly.

Song Lili could already see what was below; the village was still ablaze with fire, though not as intense as before.

There was another path behind them, but it ended halfway up the mountain.

Song Lili was standing on high ground, and with the help of the scattered lights, she could see what was happening below.

The last part was chaotic; Arima's figure flashed by in the firelight, but there were many more people carrying heavy loads on their shoulders and in their hands, moving forward with heavy burdens.

The urging voices, the children's cries, and the women's angry curses all drifted in the air and gathered in Song Lili's ears.

She felt a chill in her heart, and her heart clenched tightly. She hoped... she hoped that her brother and the others were safe.

Song Lili asked, "Auntie, should we wait here for a while or keep running?"

She wanted to wait a while, but she still wanted to ask Guo Guihua.

But Guo Guihua was completely at a loss, and instead asked Song Lili, "Should we wait or leave?"

"I think we should wait a while, even now is fine." The bandits are still far away, and they can discuss where to go after their families arrive.

Guo Guihua nodded, her face pale. "Okay, okay, I'll wait, I'll wait." With her husband back, she felt at ease.

Many people passed them while they waited, but Song Yongren and his two companions still hadn't arrived.

Song Lili managed to remain calm, but Guo Guihua was extremely anxious, constantly rubbing her hands and muttering, "Why haven't they arrived yet? Could something have happened? Amitabha, Bodhisattva, please protect them, please make sure they are alright."

Song Lili was also anxious, but she didn't show it. Guo Guihua was already like this, and if she was anxious, Song Fang and Yang Mei would probably panic too.

After the firelight disappeared halfway up the mountain, Song Lili felt a chill in her heart.

That was where they hid their grain. The lights went out, which meant the bandits had already arrived there, but Song Yongren and his men hadn't caught up yet.

And they couldn't wait any longer.

Song Lili gritted her teeth and said, "Auntie, we have to go, or we'll be caught up."

As for Song Yongren and the others, all we can do is pray for their safety.

But Guo Guihua cried, "Lili, no, we can't stop waiting, your Uncle Weimin and the others haven't arrived yet."

“Auntie, if we wait any longer, we’ll be in danger too. Let’s go first. They’re definitely chasing us. We’ll go find them after they’re gone.”

"No, he hasn't come back, so I can't have any. I have to wait for him. Why throw away the food? Why separate? Wouldn't it be better to run together? If we ran together, we wouldn't have lost him by now."

Song Lili remained silent.

She knew that Guo Guihua was blaming her again, blaming her for suggesting that they go their separate ways, and blaming her for letting a few people throw away the cart.

But that's the best way.

She couldn't explain to Guo Guihua, couldn't tell her that this was the best way now.

She could only remain silent, but Yang Mei spoke up, "Mom, what are you saying? If we don't do that, we'll still be down there."

Although Yang Mei didn't fully understand, she knew that if everyone had been together, pushing the cart, they certainly wouldn't be on the mountaintop right now.

She knew that Guo Guihua was blaming Lili, but was it really Lili's fault?

It's not surprising.

Song Lili remained silent, taking one last look behind her, but Song Yongren and the others were still nowhere to be seen.

She said, "We can't wait any longer, we have to keep running." She could even see a horse charging towards her.

But Guo Guihua refused, saying, "No, I'm not leaving. You can leave if you want. You don't care about your grandpa and brother's life or death. I still have to wait for Meimei's grandpa."

"Auntie, we can't wait any longer. If we wait any longer, you and Sister Yangmei will be in danger." Those bandits won't let you go just because you're a woman.

"I don't believe it. You just don't want to wait for them. You're selfish. Weimin isn't your family. Do you not care?"

Yang Mei, furious, grabbed Guo Guihua and said, "Mom, what are you saying? Uncle Yongren and Brother Jianshe are with Dada too."

How could she say that about Lili?

Song Lili clenched her fists.

Would she want to? No, she didn't. She wanted to be with her family and didn't want them to take risks.

She is using her own methods to save everyone.

She said with difficulty, "Auntie, let's go, they will catch up."

Yes, she believed it. She believed that Song Yongren and Song Jianshe would catch up. She believed they would protect her.

There are two little girls at home; they won't let anything happen to them.

Song Lili blinked, trying to wipe away the tears welling up in her eyes, but they only increased.

She sniffed and said, "Auntie, let's go."

"If you want to leave..." Go by yourself.

"Lili... what are you still doing here? What are you doing?"

Guo Guihua's voice and Yang Weimin's voice rang out at the same time.
