Chapter Ninety-Nine: Pushed into the River

The selection of militia members made Hongqi Village quite lively for a while, but by the time things calmed down, it was already the end of April.

As Song Lili had hoped, Daqing, also known as Li Qinghua, became the militia captain, and no one in the village complained.

As May arrived, Song Lili felt a sense of pressure and even felt increasingly impatient.

What should we do? There are still six months left, but there's been no progress with Luo Weijia yet.

While she was feeling uneasy, Song Yongren suddenly pushed the door open and came in. "Lili, the ground is wet today, and the rain hasn't dried yet. Go wash the dirty clothes at home."

I've been working day and night for a while now, and the dirty laundry at home is piling up like a mountain.

"Okay, I'll go in a bit." Song Lili thought it was good to have something to do, so she wouldn't overthink things. She was radiating anxiety.

She packed all the dirty clothes in her basket, carried it to the river behind the village, found a place where the current was slow, and set up her clothes on a flat, large rock.

Everyone in the village washes their clothes this way, but everyone has a designated spot.

Song Lili was feeling irritable today, so she went to a place that others didn't usually go to, hoping to be alone and think things through.

She was completely absorbed in her own world and didn't notice that several children were following behind her, including Luo Weijia and Xia Jun.

These children took advantage of the fact that they couldn't go to the fields in the afternoon, so they went out to find frogs and birds to roast and eat, as a way to give themselves an extra meal.

However, after seeing Song Lili walking ahead, Luo Yuejin lost the desire to join the group and wanted to act alone.

He also had his own plans in mind.

"Where are you all going?" he thought, wanting to find out first, before saying that he was going in the opposite direction from everyone else.

"Frogs are most abundant near fields or ditches, so of course we'll go to those places," one friend replied.

"Oh, I see." Luo Yuejin was secretly delighted. "I don't like eating frogs, I want to eat fish, so I want to go to the river. We're not going to the same place, so I can't go with you."

"Luo Yuejin, what's wrong with you? Didn't we agree to catch frogs? Why are you suddenly changing your mind?" someone complained.

"Yeah, weren't you eating roasted frog with us just a few days ago? Why don't you like it today? You haven't found a great place and don't want to take us there, have you?"

"That's right, Luo Yuejin, you're really too stingy. We take you everywhere we go."

The past six months of working in the fields have brought Luo Yuejin closer to the other children, and he has even made several new friends.

But now his friends are not so happy with him.

Luo Yuejin felt somewhat embarrassed, and in his heart he looked down on these people, but he had to smile and say, "Of course not."

"If I find a good place, I will definitely take you there. My sister likes to eat fish, so I want to catch fish today. I'll catch frogs next time."

Hearing Luo Yuejin say this, everyone felt relieved and forgave him.

Everyone was quite forgiving. "Okay, then you go catch some fish. The fish look big, but there's hardly any meat on them. None of us want to eat them. You can go by yourself."

"Okay, let's catch frogs together again next time."

After discussing it, the group split up. Luo Yue went in the completely opposite direction from the others, but kept a close eye on Song Lili's movements.

Xia Jun also saw Song Lili. As he watched her disappear from his sight, he hesitated, wondering whether he should go over.

He still remembered the smile Song Lili gave him on the eve of the Lunar New Year, a smile that contained no disdain or contempt, just pure joy.

This made him feel very guilty, and he thought he should apologize to Song Lili.

They were just too busy later on, and the two of them never met, which delayed things until now.

Instead of going to the fields today, he joined his friends to catch frogs, thinking he could share some with his sister when he got home.

However, he accidentally ran into Song Lili, which made him change his mind. After hesitating for a long time, he still felt that he should apologize.

After Xia Jun figured things out, Song Lili and Luo Yuejin had both disappeared.

Xia Jun didn't connect the two people, and followed the direction Song Lili had left in.

When no one could see him, Luo Yuejin followed behind Song Lili.

He still remembered the insults Song Lili had inflicted on him, and seeing Song Lili alone now, a bold idea came to his mind.

He was determined to vent his anger and teach Song Lili a lesson.

Song Lili, who was walking ahead, was unaware that she had already been targeted. She was still thinking about how to force Luo Weijia to reveal his true colors.

Should we stir things up a bit? Otherwise, how long will this go on?

However, Zhang Qinghua told her a few days ago that he already had a plan and that she shouldn't interfere, but she was afraid of ruining Zhang Qinghua's plan.

At this moment, I'm in a dilemma; I want to give up, but I'm also extremely anxious.

Finally, she sighed, "Ugh... why is this so annoying? God, you really are speechless. Can't you just send me to a place where everyone is kind and everyone treats me well?"

But she knew in her heart that it was impossible; she was just saying it in her head.

"What exactly do I have to do?" Song Lili was so annoyed lately that everything made her angry.
