Chapter Seven: Danger and Fear

Without that weight, Song Lili felt much lighter, her breathing became much easier, and even the air felt much fresher.

Unfortunately, his joy turned to sorrow when he tripped over a stone and almost tumbled down from a great height.

It was only because Zhang Qinghua had been watching her closely and reacted quickly that a tragedy was averted and her life was saved.

You see, the mountains in my hometown are all flat on one side and steep, even cliff-like, on the other. The steep side can't be cleared out, so it's used for walking.

If Song Lili had fallen just now, she could have rolled all the way down from here.

Song Lili's sudden action startled everyone, including Song Lili herself, who broke out in a cold sweat, her back completely soaked.

Zhang Qinghua frowned. "Watch your step. What are you thinking about? You can't be distracted here, or you could easily get into danger."

Ever since Zhang Qinghua grabbed Song Lili's arm and pulled her close, he has never let go, holding on tightly.

Because of her guilty conscience and lingering fear, Song Lili didn't notice anything amiss. Yang Mei and the others were all focused on Song Lili and didn't notice anything either.

Only Li Qinghua gave Zhang Qinghua's hand a meaningful look, a strange smile playing on his lips, and gave Zhang Qinghua a smile that only the two of them understood.

Zhang Qinghua ignored his erratic friend, focusing most of his energy on Song Lili, with only a small portion of his attention on the ground beneath his feet.

And his attention, as fine as a hair, was focused on going up and down the mountain, and on the people around him. When he met someone, he would let go of their hand, and then clench it again when they left.

When it was time for Zhang Qinghua and the others to harvest the barley, Zhang Qinghua finally let go completely, took off the basket from his back, and placed it under a thick clump of wild grass to prevent the water from getting too hot from the sun.

Li Qinghua was doing the same thing as Zhang Qinghua, but he was jokingly asking, "How was it? What did it feel like to hold a girl's hand for the first time?"

Zhang Qinghua sneered, "Don't you know that yourself?" Then he gave Li Qinghua a contemptuous look.

Li Qinghua was furious and uttered the same words that Zhang Qinghua's father, Zhang Shengtian, had used to provoke him: "You brat, you must know that he hasn't held Meimei's hand yet, that's why you're trying to provoke me like this."

Hmph, you brat, just you wait. When the opportunity arises, I will definitely not let you off the hook.

Li Qinghua raged for a long time, but could only resign himself to starting to work. This kind of heartless person has no idea what you're angry about.

Getting angry only hurts yourself.

Meanwhile, Song Lili, on the other side, only came to her senses after a long period of stunned silence.

She felt the terror of this era once again (although what had just happened had absolutely nothing to do with this era).

Yang Mei wanted to comfort Song Lili again, but Li Qinghua pulled her hand and made her squat down. Song Fang also reacted quickly and pulled Song Lili down to squat down as well.

Song Lili was a little confused, but then she heard Li Qinghua say, "Luo Weijia is watching over there. Don't talk, hurry up and pick up the ears of grain."

With a hurried remark, Li Qinghua bent down and crouched down to move in front of the barley, picked up a sickle and started cutting. He moved quickly, and soon a large area was felled.

Upon hearing the name Luo Weijia, Song Lili felt a jolt of fear; all her senses went numb, leaving only instinctive dread.

Was it really because Luo Weijia left such a deep impression on her? The way he hit people was several times more terrifying than those fierce and ruthless people.

This is the most terrifying person Song Lili has ever encountered in her past and present lives, the first person who instinctively frightens her.

She abandoned everything else and focused on picking up the fallen ears of grain.

There was dew in the morning, and the sun had just risen. The yellowed barley stalks were still supple, and the ears of barley didn't fall off easily; there were only a few.

It's relatively quiet now, but by the afternoon, more ears of grain start to fall off, and things aren't as easy as they are now.

Song Lili knew all this common sense; she was just putting on an act, mainly because she didn't want Luo Weijia to have any leverage over her.

The others obviously knew as well, but they all squatted on the ground; at a glance, not a single person was standing upright.

Song Lili squatted for a long time before her legs went numb. But Song Fang was beside her, watching her closely and reminding her that this was the 1960s.

After hesitating for a moment, she gritted her teeth and sat down on the ground. Even though she couldn't stand up, she needed to get her blood circulating, otherwise the numbness would be so uncomfortable!

About an hour later, Song Lili noticed that several men were talking together, and gradually, some of them stood up, making it seem as if there were many more people in the field.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Song Lili stood up and stretched her arms and legs, taking the opportunity to see what it was really like to work in the fields and earn work points.

Song Lili saw that everyone was assigned a row of crops, and once their row was harvested, they could rest.

The men Song Lili had seen earlier were either resting after their surgeries or taking advantage of others' rest to slack off.

They didn't know when it started, but Zhang Qinghua and Li Qinghua also came to their side. Li Qinghua still smiled whenever they met, but they didn't know what made her so happy.

Zhang Qinghua remained silent, his presence was so low that you wouldn't notice him at all if you weren't paying attention.

Song Lili only noticed Zhang Qinghua when he stuffed a handful of barley kernels, which had been shelled and were still slightly green, into her hand.

She opened her palm and saw a handful of barley grains. Song Lili asked in confusion, "Why are you giving me these?"
