Chapter Seventy-Five Such a Family

The moment Song Xiaohong saw the cucumber, her eyes lit up.

She had heard from others that cucumbers were delicious, and that her third uncle's family grew them, but she had never seen them, let alone eaten them.

Now, seeing that her third uncle had actually given her a cucumber, giving her something so rare, she was overjoyed.

They had no idea that Song Lili had rejected it, and even if they had, they probably wouldn't have minded.

She took it carefully, ate it reluctantly, and looked at it with great relish.

Song Yongren was so heartbroken that tears were about to fall. He raised his head, blinked a few times, and swallowed back his sobs.

"Eat up, your third uncle has some at home. Come find him if you want some." He thought to himself, "This is all my third uncle can give you."

Now, Song Lili growing cucumbers is nothing new to him, but it is a rare sight for Song Xiaohong and even for the people of Hongqi Village.

Hearing Song Yongren say this, Song Xiaohong was overjoyed. "Thank you, Third Uncle."

She thought, "My third uncle is so good to me, even better than my great-uncle."

If Song Lili knew what Song Xiaohong was really thinking, she would definitely retort with disdain, "Has he ever been good to you?"

However, she didn't know that.

Song Lili had long since put down the barley she was carrying, and she walked home with a light step as if nothing had happened.

Little did she know that she was the subject of much discussion after she left.

After she got home, she started thinking about what to eat that night.

Recently, she enriched the greenhouse, planting all kinds of uncommon vegetables.

For example, Wang Daming found seeds for things like chili peppers, romaine lettuce, and cilantro, and they were all successfully grown.

So, she no longer had to live a life of eating gruel for every meal.

With these dishes, even a simple porridge can be enjoyed.

Recently, both she and Song Fang have gained some weight, and Song Yongren and Song Jianshe's complexions have also become much rosier.

So she planned to continue like this.

Soon, Song Lili finalized the menu for tonight: stir-fried romaine lettuce, cucumber salad, and mashed potatoes with some noodles. That would be dinner.

After finalizing the menu, Song Lili took Song Fang to the kitchen, asked her to start the fire, and also chatted with her.

Song Lili couldn't think of a better solution for Song Fang's situation, so she could only spend more time with her and talk to her more, hoping to get her to speak.

"Fangfang, how about we have mashed potatoes tonight? And maybe some stir-fried romaine lettuce and a cucumber salad? Do you like it?"

Every time Song Lili got something new, she would introduce it to her family, so Song Fang recognized all the items Song Lili mentioned.

She nodded with sparkling eyes, then pinched her thumb and forefinger together and pulled them out long. Song Lili immediately understood what she meant.

"Fangfang wants to eat chili peppers? You really like chili peppers?" Song Lili asked in surprise, as this was the first time she had heard this.

Song Fang nodded again, this time with a brighter light in her eyes than before. She no longer had that timid demeanor and looked like a cute girl.

Song Lili happily patted her head, "Okay, since Fangfang likes to eat it, then I'll stir-fry some green peppers just for you, okay?"

This time, upon hearing that it was just for her alone, Song Fang was even happier, and she pushed Song Lili forward, urging her to hurry up.

Song Lili thought to herself, "Such an innocent child."

The truth is that Song Yongren and Song Jianshe are not big eaters; they can tolerate a little bit, but they can't stand more.

But this time Wang Daming brought back something extra spicy. Song Lili had only made it once, and Song Yongren and Song Jianshe said it was too spicy and they couldn't handle it.

From then on, she never did it again; Wang Daming took it all.

Surprisingly, Song Fang actually likes to eat.

Since she likes it, we can keep some at home for Song Fang to eat.

Song Lili was quick; by the time she had almost finished cooking, Song Jianshe, the last one to arrive, also returned.

During the meal, Song Yongren was still lamenting, "Xiao Hong is such a pitiful child, she's always hungry at home."

Song Lili sneered inwardly. It was quite pitiful for the Gu siblings to have encountered such an awful person.

From now on, she only hopes that the Gu family won't come around so often, otherwise she really won't be able to stand it.

Song Jianshe sighed as well, "Grandma doesn't give her any food at all, and Uncle doesn't care either. How could she not go hungry?"

"I just don't understand. They're all our own children, so why is Song Jianguo so chubby and round-faced, while Xiao Hong is so skinny?"

In her mind, Song Lili replied to Song Jianshe, "Don't you know that one of the excellent traditions of our country is the preference for sons over daughters?"

Gu was a typical example of this kind of person, and she influenced her children and descendants.

Thinking of this, Song Lili couldn't help but feel fortunate that Song Yongren wasn't a sexist, otherwise she would have cried herself to death.

And then there's Fangfang, who's timid. If she were to encounter a family that favors sons over daughters, she wouldn't even dare to imagine the consequences.

Therefore, Song Yongren is a good person.

Song Lili didn't want to hear about these messy, mood-disrupting things, so she tapped the table and said, "Don't talk about their business anymore. It's pointless to talk about it."

"You should think about how to harvest the vegetables in the greenhouse in a few days. It's harvest time now, so they're worthless."

Right now, the farmers' yards are full of fruits and vegetables that are almost ripe, but they don't fetch a good price. Song Lili actually doesn't really want to sell them.

She wanted to process it into a semi-finished product and store it until winter before selling it.

However, considering that Qian Liulin would be coming to Hongqi Village in the next few days, Song Lili had to give up these ideas.
