Chapter Seventy-Three: Another Autumn Harvest

"Sister-in-law? Where is your sister-in-law?" As far as Song Lili knew, her cousin from her uncle's family was not married yet, so how could he have a sister-in-law?

"That's your older brother's fiancée, the one your mother arranged for. She came today asking us to help fix the house because it's leaking."

"My brother's fiancée? How come I didn't know there was such a person?"

Song Lili didn't pay attention to what Song Yongren said after that; she only heard the first sentence and immediately exploded.

Song Jianshe actually has a fiancée? She's been here for a year and has never heard of this before; this is the first time she's heard of it.

This is absolutely unbelievable! Where did this person come from?

Why have I never heard of this before? Is she from a different world?

Song Lili found it unbelievable. Song Jianshe's fiancée, no matter what, would be mentioned at least once a year, right?

“How could you not know? It was arranged by your mother. You were all there when the engagement was made,” Song Yongren said.

"Then... then I haven't seen her all year."

Although the rules were still strict at this time, they were already engaged, so wouldn't they meet? For example, Yangmei and Daqing would meet at least once a week.

She hadn't seen, or rather, heard of Song Jianshe's boyfriend for a whole year. Is that really normal?

“Why haven’t I seen her… Oh, she probably hasn’t met you yet. She has a lot of work to do at home, so she’s always busy,” Song Jianshe said from the side.

Song Lili frowned. Too much housework? Is that a valid reason?

"So, when did this happen?" Song Lili stopped pursuing the question of whether such a person even existed.

She has no memory of her past and doesn't know what's going on.

Since both Song Yongren and Song Jianshe agree, then this person must actually exist.

It's ironic that I haven't seen her in so long! Is this future sister-in-law too mysterious, or does she simply not take Song Jianshe seriously?

To be honest, Song Lili felt uncomfortable, as if her precious treasure had been ruined by someone else.

She now considers the Song family as family, so of course she won't let others treat them badly or disrespectfully.

And this future sister-in-law gave her exactly that feeling.

Hopefully, this isn't a difficult person to get along with.

"Your mother made this arrangement before she passed away, saying that this way she could rest assured," Song Yongren said evasively.

Song Lili understood that this was a marriage to bring good luck, but she didn't know who it was for. The most likely candidate was her mother, Wu Ying.

"Okay," Song Lili said, not asking any more questions. Asking too many questions would only make Song Yongren think she was acting strangely.

She decided to secretly inquire about Song Jianshe's fiancée and see what kind of person she was.

If someone has bad character, they'll have a lot of trouble later on.

I only heard about Xia Niu, Song Jianshe's fiancée, from the Song family on this day. After that, things returned to normal.

It's as if this person never existed.

Song Lili originally wanted to ask Yang Mei about it, but the autumn harvest was coming up, and she had been busy harvesting barley ever since, so she didn't have time to go.

During these few days of autumn harvest, Xu Youcai and Luo Weijia caused trouble again.

This time, they didn't openly make things difficult for the Song family members, nor were they as blatant as they were during the spring planting season.

However, the tasks assigned to her made Song Lili even angrier than the last time.

Song Yongren's leg had only recovered for a month or two, so it was best for him not to do heavy work at the moment. However, Luo Weijia arranged for him to carry things.

His legs can now bear less weight than barley, but Song Yongren is the one doing it.

The Song family members were extremely anxious. If Song Yongren really did die, his leg would probably need to be taken to a doctor again.

But this year is different from last year. Last year, only one person in the family needed to carry it, but this year everyone has been assigned a task.

Song Jianshe would bundle the harvested barley together and stack it on top of each other, then use the barley to build a structure similar to a roof to prevent it from getting wet in the rain.

Song Lili was carrying the tools that everyone used to harvest barley, as well as ears of barley and so on.

It seems that Song Yongren had no choice but to carry the barley down the mountain.

Looking at Xu Youcai's overt provocation and Luo Weijia's more amiable smile, Song Lili's eyes held a storm brewing.

She knew it was a difficult choice.

If she chooses to stand up and oppose it, then Luo Weijia's denial will label her as someone who is not obedient to arrangements.

However, if he doesn't object, Song Yongren's leg will develop problems.

In the end, Song Lili chose the latter, throwing away the sickle she was holding.

"Director Luo, my thigh has just healed and I can't carry such heavy things yet. I'll take his place and let him carry these tools."

The tools are small and fragmented, so they might be a bit difficult to handle, but once organized, they are easy to carry, much easier than carrying barley.

Song Lili said this because she was certain that Luo Weijia would not object.

Because, on the surface, her taking Song Yongren's place was also making things difficult for her, which Luo Weijia would definitely be happy to see.

Sure enough, as soon as Song Lili mentioned it, Luo Weijia agreed and even felt guilty.

"Look at my memory, how could I forget that Yongren's leg has just healed? Okay, then let Lili do it."

“But Lili is still a child, so don’t carry such a heavy load. Just carry half of it, and you’ll get the same work points as the adults.”

"We should also take care of your family's situation."

Luo Weijia's words sounded reasonable, but if Song Lili agreed, she would become the target of public criticism.

Song Lili's family is not the only one in financial difficulty; there are families even more impoverished than hers. So why is Song's family being treated differently?
