Chapter Sixty: Distributing Grain

The group groped their way back, stumbling along the uneven path. When they reached the bottom of the mountain, Song Lili twisted her ankle and felt some pain.

She could bear the pain, so she didn't say anything, not wanting to delay things, and fearing that she might run into Luo Weijia and Xu Youcai.

I was still praying that I wouldn't run into them when, as soon as I reached this side of the bridge, I saw a figure coming from the other side.

Song Lili quickly stopped in her tracks. "It seems like someone is coming from over there. I don't know if it's them. Should we go over there?"

In the past, what if it were one of those two people?

Before Song Lili could figure out how to handle the situation, Zhang Qinghua said, "Let's hide for a while, just in case. We shouldn't confront them."

"Even if it's someone else, we shouldn't run into them, otherwise it won't be good if they find out later."

The group thought Zhang Qinghua's suggestion was good, but another problem arose: how to avoid it?

There's only one bridge here, an old-looking bridge, and then it's just flat ground with nowhere to hide.

Avoiding it is somewhat difficult.

Finally, Song Lili had a flash of inspiration: "Quickly, let's go under the bridge and crawl into the archway so they can't see us."

She had just remembered that the bridge was an arched bridge with two semicircles, designed to allow the river water to flow.

This is exactly what they need to do.

"Hurry up and go." The two people were almost across the bridge.

If they hadn't been so vigilant, using the bridge piers to block the view, they would have been spotted long ago.

Zhang Qinghua and Li Qinghua left first, while Song Lili and the other two stayed behind, hiding in the bridge archway.

The river behind the village has a relatively large flow, and because the bridge partially obstructs the river, making the flow much faster than in other places.

The place where they stood was surrounded by river water, except for a foot-width space to put their feet down.

The four of them threw their food out of the river, stood close to the bridge, and supported each other, afraid that one of them might suddenly fall into the water.

Song Lili felt uncomfortable; Zhang Qinghua was on her left and Zhang Qingguo was on her right, making her very uneasy.

Since she wasn't very familiar with Zhang Qingguo, and the group was too close together, she couldn't help but move closer to Zhang Qinghua, trying to create some distance between them.

"Don't move, or you'll fall!" Zhang Qinghua immediately warned.

The weather is still quite cold in early spring; if you fall in, you're likely to get sick.

Song Lili wrinkled her nose and twisted uncomfortably, but obediently remained still, understanding Zhang Qinghua's meaning.

Soon, she could hear footsteps passing by. Song Lili subconsciously held her breath, afraid that her breathing would be heard.

She didn't even realize it herself; she was so scared that she didn't dare to breathe and was only able to stay alive by a single breath.

The other three also subconsciously slowed their breathing, waiting for the people on the bridge to walk away.

After they could no longer hear any sound, none of them moved. Actually, Song Lili was already feeling very uncomfortable, but since no one moved, she didn't dare to move either, for fear that they would notice.

When Zhang Qinghua said, "We should go far away," Song Lili finally let out a deep breath, feeling as if her lungs were about to explode.

Her labored breathing drew the attention of all three men, and Zhang Qingguo couldn't help but chuckle.

Daqing couldn't help but chuckle, his shoulders shaking violently, but he kept quiet to save face for Song Lili.

Although Zhang Qinghua stood there without reacting, a hint of a smile still flashed in his deep eyes.

Song Lili glared at her. "What's so funny? Didn't you hold your breath? It's the pot calling the kettle black."

The other three paused, because they had also been holding their breath, though not as intensely as Song Lili.

Zhang Qinghua coughed and said seriously, "Stop fooling around, hurry up and leave, otherwise those two will find out once they don't see the grain."

Zhang Qinghua had just identified the two people by their footsteps as Luo Weijia and Xu Youcai.

Because he was familiar with the Luo family, he naturally recognized Luo Weijia's footsteps, so the other person must be Xu Youcai.

They stopped talking and carried the grain home as fast as they could from the back, heading home to Song Lili's house.

Luo Weijia was in the First Brigade, and Xu Youcai was in the Third Brigade. It was safest to leave the grain with Song Lili, as it was close to both of them.

Only after they secretly placed the grain in their own pigsty did they finally breathe a sigh of relief.

"You two go back first. Come back here tomorrow to collect your rewards. Also, I have something to tell you both tomorrow."

The last sentence was addressed to Zhang Qinghua and Li Qinghua, excluding Zhang Qingguo.
