Chapter Thirty-Six: The Supply and Marketing Cooperative Sells Cabbage

Song Lili refused to take the blame, pouting, "You say that to everyone, don't you?"

She didn't believe Qin Hongxia had only told her. She could tell from Zhang Panzi's debt collection that neither of the Qin family mother and daughter were people who could keep their mouths shut.

It's still unclear whether it's the mother or the daughter.

Song Lili also tried to stir things up, but unexpectedly, this caused a stir.

Qin Hongxia's face was very unpleasant, showing both shame and anger at being exposed by Song Lili, as well as dissatisfaction with Song Lili.

Then, without saying a word, he rushed out of Song Lili's house.

Song Lili shrugged, looking at Song Fang not far away. "Did I offend her?" she wondered to herself. "Is it really that serious?"

Don't be afraid of what others say about what you've done!

Haha, Qin Hongxia is the kind of person who never learns from a bad experience!

Otherwise, according to most people's thinking, after the last time she treated Qin Hongxia that way, Qin Hongxia would probably have ignored her forever.

I never expected that after just one delivery, the vegetables would come right to my door.

Ah, humans!

Song Lili didn't take the matter to heart; she was just curious about why Xu Youcai had been beaten.

When the whole family was having dinner together that evening, I told it to them as a joke.

Song Jianshe said somewhat awkwardly, "He must have offended someone, otherwise why would he have been beaten?"

Song Lili nodded in agreement, "I think so too. Xu Youcai isn't a good person usually, so it's not surprising that he offends people."

Song Yongren asked, "Do you know who did it?"

Song Lili shook her head, "I heard that we didn't see who it was, so we can't guess. Anyway, Xu Youcai is definitely going to suffer in silence."

"However, hearing that he got beaten up must have made him feel pretty good, as it could be considered revenge for the last time he bumped into me."

Song Lili's thinking was simple: she didn't yet have the ability to teach Xu Youcai a lesson without anyone finding out, so having someone else teach him a lesson would be a way for her to vent her anger.

Song Yongren said, "Don't say such things outside, lest Xu Youcai hold a grudge against you."

Song Lili wanted to say that Xu Youcai must be crazy, because he holds a grudge whenever she says something.

But upon further reflection, Song Yongren's words made some sense. What if Xu Youcai was a fool? What if he actually took it seriously?

It would be wrong to think that she hired someone to beat him up!

Therefore, he nodded solemnly and said, "I understand. I'm just saying it at home; I won't talk about it outside."

Besides, even if Song Lili wanted to talk nonsense, she couldn't find anyone to talk to.

She usually only associates with Yang Mei's family, the two Qinghuas, and occasionally with neighbors; that's about it.

Even if there is gossip, there's nowhere to spread it.

What she wants most right now is to improve her family's standard of living as soon as possible, so that at least they can have enough to eat.

The four members of the Song family spent more than ten days busy feeding pigs and searching for fuel.

By early November, Song Lili's cabbages had grown bigger.

Before this, Song Lili would pick cabbages every now and then, but she didn't give them away anymore. Instead, she stored them all in the cellar where she stored potatoes, waiting to sell them together after the cabbage harvest.

Before picking the cabbages, Song Lili went to the town's supply and marketing cooperative. She needed to find a good market for them before she could pick them. What if she couldn't find a market for them in a while and the cabbages didn't keep well?

She set off before dawn, and after looking around the town, she found that although capitalism had not been overthrown, no one was out buying or selling anything.

When the supply and marketing cooperative opened, Jin Xia, with whom they had had a less than pleasant argument last time, was already sitting at the counter.

This time, however, her attitude was very good. She clearly remembered Song Lili and asked with a smile, "What are you going to buy this time?"

Song Lili laughed along, "Sister Jin, I'm not buying anything today, I want to sell something. I wonder if your supply and marketing cooperative buys cabbage?"

“Dried vegetables? We don’t buy them. Almost every household has dried vegetables in winter, so we can’t sell them even if we buy them,” Jin Xia said without thinking.

Song Lili shook her head. "It's not dried vegetables, it's freshly harvested cabbage. I don't know if you'd buy it?"

Jin Xia was somewhat surprised. "Fresh cabbage? How could there be any at this time? Girl, you must be talking nonsense."

Song Lili knew it wouldn't be easy to convince others, so she simply took out the cabbages from her basket and said, "Look for yourself!"

To make it look nice, Song Lili washed the cabbages a little at home. Now they look bright green, and you can almost feel the breath of life on them.

Jin Xia was genuinely shocked, staring in astonishment at the cabbages in Song Lili's basket. It took her a long time to say, "Oh my, it really is cabbage! How is this possible?"

"Hey girl, where did you get this? It's still pretty fresh."

Song Lili received the reaction she expected and said with a smile, "These were just pulled from the ground and are still very fresh. Sister Jin, do you buy cabbages like these?"

Jin Xia hesitated, "I don't know either. This has never happened before. I guess they'll accept it."

Song Lili suggested, "Sister Jin, why don't you ask your boss? If they accept it, I have some at home."

Jin Xia thought about it and realized it wasn't so bad. If she didn't accept the money, the worst that could happen was that her boss would scold her. But if she did accept it, at least she would have made a good impression on her boss!

"Okay, I'll go ask. Wait a minute, girl!"

In an office behind the supply and marketing cooperative sat a thin, square-faced, but tall man who looked to be about twenty-three or twenty-four years old.

He was sitting behind his desk, frowning, scribbling on a piece of paper, muttering to himself, "There's nothing here in the dead of winter, what am I supposed to sell?"
