Chapter 10

Seeing that Su Lin was cooking, Su Yu comfortably took the basin and went out to wash her face, not forgetting to tell Su Zhi to keep an eye on things so as not to waste food.

Su Zhi immediately sat up straight and stared at Su Lin, looking like a supervising old man.

As Su Lin lived, she wiped away her tears. She looked back at her eldest brother, who was staring blankly, then at her second brother, who was supervising her, and her eldest sister, who had already gone out to wash her face. Suddenly, she was overwhelmed with sorrow.

She suddenly remembered a song she had learned at school, and couldn't help but sing it aloud, "The cabbage, so green and yellow, lost its mother at two or three years old, now it lives well with its father..."

The sound was rather mournful.

Both Su Dazhi and Su Zhi touched their arms, feeling uneasy.

There were people listening outside, pointing and whispering. What's going on with the Su family lately?

Something just doesn't look right.

They've all changed their personalities. The fourth son of the Su family, who was usually so arrogant, is now singing about cabbage?

"Su Yu, what's wrong with your Lin? Is she throwing a tantrum at home again?"

"That's what Sister Lin from next door said."

Sister-in-law Lin and the Su family had been neighbors for many years, and she sympathized with Su Yu's plight. Seeing that things weren't going well at the Su family's house, she worried that Su Yu had encountered another difficult situation.

Su Yu washed her face, feeling incredibly refreshed. Upon hearing what Sister-in-law Lin said, she listened carefully and exclaimed, "Oh, they're singing now!"

"What else could it be about? It's all because Liu Mei is making a fuss about dividing the family property. If our parents were still here, these two wouldn't be homeless. Come on, the Liu family is really a menace. If it weren't for Dazhi and us being on the same page, we really wouldn't be able to live like this."

Su Yu shook her head and sighed, then carried the basin into the house.

Sister-in-law Lin immediately spread the word. It seemed the Liu family's daughter was trying to drive her husband's older sister to her death. The sister-in-law had just been discharged from the hospital, and now she was acting strangely again.

"What are you singing? You're much luckier than cabbage. When your parents passed away, you were at least five or six years old." Su Yu put down the washbasin. "You're still comparing yourself to cabbage? Cabbage had to work at three years old. You're already sixteen. Aren't you afraid of embarrassing your family if you go out like this? If you keep crying and making a fool of yourself in front of the Su family, you can stop going to school and just sing songs at the door."

Su Lin was singing enthusiastically when she heard these words, and she was so moved that she held back her tears.

This is unbearable! My older sister is truly heartless!

Su Yu ignored her and turned back to tidy her bed. This house was still too cramped. Once she got these guys settled, she'd arrange for them all to move out. Those with dorm rooms could stay in the dorms, and those without could rent their own places. She'd only need one person to do the laundry and cooking.

"Sister, I'm going out to take a look," Su Dazhi suddenly said, standing up.

He was supposed to pick up Liu Mei today, but after talking to his older sister, he forgot about it, and he couldn't shake the feeling of unease. It wasn't that he was worried about Liu Mei getting into trouble—after all, nothing bad really happens in today's society—but rather that he was worried Liu Mei would be upset.

Su Yu rolled her eyes. "Look at Liu Mei? She's got money and tickets, she can take the bus, she can eat fancy meals outside, what are you worried about? Do you think everyone's like you, walking back hungry? Besides, even if you go out now, she'll still do what she wants. She might even take advantage of you and crush you!"

"Brother, you're useless," Su Zhi said, crossing his legs.

Ever since he found out that his brother was going to fight him for the house, he's found fault with everything he does.

Su Dazhi glared at him and said, "Zhi, what are you saying?!"

"That's exactly right, being pinned down by a woman..."

"What woman?!" Su Yu retorted angrily, "What's wrong with a woman?"

Su Zhi immediately said, "Sister, I'm not you, I'm your sister-in-law, you're different."

I can't let my sister get angry. If she does, his plans to drop out of school will fall through again.

In all his life, Su Dazhi had never realized so profoundly that everything he had was thanks to his eldest sister.

If her older sister doesn't feed Su Lin, Su Lin will go hungry. If her older sister finds her a job, Su Lin can escape this awful school.

Seeing Su Zhi's reaction, Su Yu was still satisfied, but her face remained stern. "Liu Mei is an exception. No woman is like her. She doesn't know how to cherish her man and treats him like an animal. Not to mention others, I'm a woman too. Look how much I've worried about you. I'm so tired that I have to go to the hospital. And as soon as I'm discharged, I still have to find connections to arrange a job for you. These days, jobs are so hard to find."

Su Zhi nodded repeatedly, "Sister, you're just different. How can my sister-in-law compare to you?"

“You think this way, but some people don’t.” Su Yu looked at Su Dazhi meaningfully. “Some people would rather give us livestock than open up to us.”

These words struck a chord with Su Dazhi. What he had done before was essentially treating Liu Mei like livestock. He even insisted on separating from his older sister…

He obediently sat down. "Sis, I won't go out, okay?"

Su Yu snorted, "If you can still sit still when you hear Liu Mei's name, then I'll consider you a real man." Dealing with such a coward, gentle persuasion won't work; you have to show some temper.

"I think that's impossible," Su Zhi said with a smile.

Su Dazhi: "..." I really want to hit someone.

Listening to the three of them chatting animatedly, Su Lin felt like an outsider, feeling utterly wronged and confused. She had no idea when this precious darling of the family had become an outsider.

And he also had to cook for the whole family.

Wiping away her tears, she continued to tend the fire, and finally managed to cook the porridge.

Smelling the aroma, Su Zhigang was about to pick up his bowl and chopsticks when Su Yu said, "Wait, let me taste it first to see if it's cooked. What if you get an upset stomach?"
