Director Zhou's wife said, "It's not that we don't care. We'll eat in the canteen for lunch, and we'll go to Mom's place for dinner on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. We'll buy some good food for Mom and the others. When they have holidays, we'll bring Tao Tao to stay with us. Tao Tao is a boy, and he'll get married eventually. He'll need a house when he gets married. Look how many people in the unit are still crammed into single dormitories."
Director Zhou said, "It seems the city is going to implement some kind of pilot policy, which will allow units to build houses in the future."
“You know it’s just a trial run, and we don’t know when it will be finalized. Tao Tao isn’t with our company, so it wouldn’t be good to give him a separate apartment.”
Director Zhou was certainly aware of these issues. He just felt that this was too sudden and he wasn't mentally prepared. His mother and son were his family, and the fact that they were moving out made him feel somewhat uncomfortable. But honestly, if he could avoid arguing at home in the future, he would be willing to be a little tired from running between the two places.
"Regarding buying a house, as long as you and Mom agree... then let's do it this way. But why did Mom suddenly decide to buy a house? I really can't figure it out. Where are we going to find a house for her all this time?"
Hearing Director Zhou ask this question, Director Zhou's wife felt a little guilty. "Today, Mom was invited over by Li Mei and a colleague from your secretariat named Su Yu. I guess they helped persuade Mom, and she came to her senses."
"Why bother Rao with family matters?" Director Zhou was somewhat displeased. Mainly, he felt it was embarrassing for his subordinates to know about his family affairs.
His wife said with a stern face, "They just meant well. We're in the same department, what's wrong with helping each other out? Don't overthink it, Li Mei is an honest person. That Su Yu is also going to take the college entrance exam, and she might not even stay in your department in the future. What's the point of trying to please you?"
After being scolded by his wife, Director Zhou didn't want to think too much about it. He had indeed wronged her over the years.
"As for the house, Su Yu came to me before she went back to talk to me about her mother wanting to buy a house. She also told me that she had a house that she couldn't sell and was willing to sell it to us."
"Are there still houses that can't be sold?"
"Director Zhou said."
Director Zhou's wife pinched him. "It's like this. You actually took it seriously. Comrade Su Yu is an honest person. If we're worried about gossip, we can give her a few more yuan to let her know that I'm taking Mom to look at houses. If she agrees, I think we can finalize it."
His mother and wife are already engaged, what else can he do? Director Zhou sighed, "Alright, anyway, we can't take advantage of others for even a penny. We'll do what we have to do. We absolutely will not allow anyone to accept any benefits from others."
"I understand. I know what kind of person you are. I am also a teacher, and I would never do such a thing."
Director Zhou's wife breathed a sigh of relief.
After the couple finished discussing their plan, they went inside. Grandma Zhou was still awake, waiting for them to come back and discuss their business.
"So, has it been settled? When are you going to buy it? I'm telling you, for Tao Tao's sake, I'm determined to buy this house."
Grandma Zhou said with a resolute expression.
We hadn't realized the seriousness of the situation before, but now it's different; we have to buy it. How can the Zhou family not even own any property? We can't just send Tao Tao back to his hometown to live in that mud house in the countryside.
Director Zhou's wife smiled and said, "Mom, Lao Zhou and I have discussed it. We'll definitely buy the house. We'll go look at houses tomorrow. Is that alright?"
"Okay, okay, Tao Tao's gone to school, let's go see him." Grandma Zhou's face immediately lit up with a smile. She added, "But I have to tell you, Tao Tao and I are moving out, so you still have to give us living expenses!"
Director Zhou touched his forehead. "Mom, I'll definitely give you living expenses. I've prepared everything you need, from firewood to rice and oil."
"That's good. I'm going to bed now. I still need to look at houses tomorrow."
When Director Zhou entered the office for the second time, he made a point of glancing at the new female colleague in the department.
He hadn't paid much attention to Su Yu before, after all, there were quite a few people in the secretariat, and Su Yu's education and qualifications didn't seem particularly outstanding. Besides, she was transferred from there by Vice Mayor Qiu. For someone who came through a superior's connections, he just considered her another person in the department. However, because she was somewhat connected to his family, he couldn't help but keep an eye on her.
He was still somewhat wary of someone who had suddenly become involved with his family, so after starting work, he went to the personnel department to investigate Su Yu's file.
I was quite surprised when I saw it. This woman has a very impressive resume. Her outstanding performance and the awards she received at the factory, as well as her contributions to the group work in the city, are all documented.
This is an outstanding person who gets things done.
Director Zhou was observing secretly, and Su Yu had also noticed something about it. This was something she had expected.
Su Yu looked down on so-called personal connections. Personal connections are something that diminishes with use. Holding onto them only creates a kind of invisible transactional relationship between people.
Therefore, when she intervened in the Zhou family's affairs, she didn't initially intend to gain favor directly from Director Zhou. Instead, she planned to gradually infiltrate the Zhou family.
Once she established close ties with the Zhou family and became a good acquaintance with Old Mrs. Zhou and Director Zhou's wife, even the strictest Director Zhou would be subtly influenced. Later, he would unconsciously begin to treat her as one of his own.
Back then, personal connections weren't enough.
Even if she goes to university and comes back in a few years, she will still be an acquaintance of the Zhou family.
