Su Yu rubbed her red eyes and looked at Su Zhi, who looked like a bear.
Su Zhi looks quite like Su Yu, with a thin face, a tall and slender figure, and a pair of lively eyes. He looks like the kind of rebellious, immature kid in his teens.
Looking at the child, Su Yu immediately rubbed her eyes again, which turned red. She looked at Su Zhi and said, "Why are you crying, sister? Isn't it all for you? Your older brother is making a fuss about dividing the family property. Where will you live in the future? Lin and I are women, so we can find someone to marry and have a place to live. But what about you, a boy? You won't even have your own house. Where will you live? How will you get married?"
Su Zhi was stunned.
He knew about the family's division of property and thought his older brother was too cowardly, actually letting his sister-in-law instigate him to divide the property and seize the house.
However, he always felt that this was something his older sister should worry about, and even if he was unhappy, he wouldn't bother to care about such things.
But after hearing his older sister say that, he felt a little uneasy.
My brother is trying to take the house from me.
Su Yu patted his shoulder and said, "Zhi, you've grown up so much. You're seventeen now. I know you want to start working early because you want to help support your family. So I'm helping you find a job. Once you find one, you won't have to go to school anymore."
Upon hearing Su Yu's words, Su Zhi's previously bewildered mind suddenly cleared up like fireworks, and he asked in surprise, "Sister, really? You used to force me to study." In the past, if he didn't study, his older sister would cry and insist on dragging him to school.
"Really." Su Yu nodded.
Of course it's true. Only the original owner, who was so devoted to her younger sister, would force her younger siblings to study, hoping they would succeed in the future. Su Yu had absolutely no such intentions. Since they didn't want to study, they could just find work to support the family. Ideally, they'd hand over all their wages so she could have food and drink. "I've thought it through. You're a man now, a grown man, it's time for you to have your own career. If you don't want to study, then don't study, I support you!"
Su Zhi was overjoyed, "Sister, I'll definitely help you share the burden! Also, this family definitely won't be divided, don't worry!"
He smiled broadly, as long as he didn't have to go to school, everything was fine. As for going to work, he didn't care. Anyway, the work wasn't tiring, and if he got tired, he wouldn't work, would go home to rest, and his older sister would take care of him.
Su Yu said with a touched expression, "Okay, then I'm counting on you, sister." Then she placed the fire tongs in Su Zhi's hands, "I cried too much just now, and my eyes are uncomfortable. You start the stove first. Today we won't feed them, we'll teach them a lesson and let them know how powerful we are. We'll eat well ourselves. After we finish eating, I'll go help you find a job."
Su Zhi immediately felt that he and his sister were on the same side, and said right away, "Okay, sister, you sit down. I'm the best at starting a fire."
For a teenager going through a phase of immature and rebellious behavior who's done all sorts of things, starting a fire is nothing new. He quickly got the stove in the house lit.
Su Yu looked at the black smoke billowing from her stove and immediately covered her nose. She now missed her smokeless kitchen at home terribly.
Sigh, a smokeless kitchen is out of the question, but a coal stove is something I might consider getting.
Just as the fire was lit, Su Dazhi, his wife Liu Mei, and Su Lin returned.
Su Yu ignored them and sat on the bed combing her hair.
The original owner had waist-length hair, but unfortunately, due to malnutrition, most of it was split, dry, and yellow, making it anything but beautiful. She managed to braid it after half a combing.
Su Dazhi and the others looked at Su Yu with strange expressions, noticing that she hadn't uttered a sound all morning and that Su Zhi had even cooked her meals.
Liu Mei nudged Su Dazhi, who then stammered, "Big sister, well, about the family matters... what are you thinking?"
"What are you thinking, brother? This family can't be divided!" Su Zhi immediately said.
Liu Mei chuckled. "Zhi, this is a big deal. What are you, a child, going to do about it?"
"Why can't we interfere? I'm a boy from the Su family too."
"Your eldest brother is the eldest son in the family."
"Our eldest sister is the oldest in our family!" Su Zhi firmly supported his eldest sister.
This was truly a time of decline for the working class.
Su Yu felt somewhat fortunate. She had at least woken up to find herself in the working class, able to eat in the canteen today. If she had been classified as a peasant—a third-generation poor peasant—her social status would be clean, but life wouldn't be so good. She knew from her memories that the countryside was currently experiencing famine, with people everywhere going hungry. If she had actually gone to the countryside, she might be eating tree bark with the villagers today.
Returning to the home she remembered, Su Yu stood at the door, unwilling to go in at all. She felt that this place was simply uninhabitable.
The Su family lived in a large courtyard. More than a dozen families lived in that courtyard. Each family only had a single room, with several generations crammed into one space. Pots, pans, and other household items were piled up inside, and the courtyard was filled with various miscellaneous items. It looked crowded and chaotic.
"Su Yu's back! Why aren't you coming inside?"
Aunt Li, who lived in the same courtyard, came out to get water and saw her standing at the door in a daze. She asked her what was wrong.
"Just got back." Su Yu came back to her senses, smiled as she entered.
Then, relying on her memory, she crawled into her own single room. Looking at the dilapidated wooden door to the room, she frowned and reached out to open it.
