Chapter 180

Upon arriving at the Song family's place, Song's mother, seeing the large meat buns Su Yu had brought, said that Su Yu was being too kind and instructed Secretary Song to take Su Yu to buy flour and meat later. The Su family had a larger population and needed food more than their own.

At noon, the family heated up the large meat buns that Su Yu had brought, cooked white porridge, and stir-fried two dishes, one meat and one vegetable. The whole family gathered around and ate a lively meal.

At the dinner table, Song Ma, Secretary Song, and Su Yu discussed the engagement.

We originally planned to finalize the decision when Su Yu was on winter break. But now Secretary Song is being transferred to another post, and she'll be spending the Lunar New Year there. If we don't finalize it soon, it might be delayed again.

Of course, Song Ma knew that Su Yu was currently studying and wouldn't be getting married anytime soon. However, she felt it was better to have an engagement. Otherwise, if things dragged on, people would gossip. They might think that the Song family wasn't genuinely interested in getting a wife, and with their son so far away, there would be even more opportunities for gossip, like him meeting other women outside... She'd seen that kind of thing too many times.

Su Yu said virtuously, "I'll do whatever Dongzheng says, whenever he wants. I have no objections."

Under the table, she kicked Secretary Song.

Secretary Song ate a meat bun, glancing at her parents. "What's the rush? I'm busy with the handover process. I don't have time for that now. I'll get back to you in a couple of days."

Mr. Song immediately grabbed his cane again. However, he refrained from doing so in front of Su Yu.

Song Ma was a sensible woman; she knew the couple needed to discuss this. It's a new society now; young people have their own ideas and concerns, and they're unwilling to listen to the arrangements of the older generation.

She said, "Then you should contact us as soon as you've made your decision. There's not much left, and we still need to save up meat and vegetable coupons. We need to invite everyone in the compound who should be invited. Oh, and you also need to go to Secretary Hao's house to invite him. After all, he's your matchmaker."

"I know, I know, I'll definitely go." Secretary Song readily agreed, but her hand unconsciously touched her knee.

He received military education, a tough-guy education that emphasized shedding blood but not tears and that a man's knees were worth gold.

Moreover, he had a premonition that after kneeling down, he would never be able to straighten his back again, even though he had never straightened his back in front of his girlfriend...

After dinner, Song's father chatted with Su Yu again.

Secretary Song used to always stay by his side and try to recruit people, but this time he was well-behaved. After finishing his meal, he went out to take out the trash and didn't come back until he had taken out most of it.

Fortunately, everyone in the family was focused on Su Yu, and no one paid attention to when he was there or not.

Seeing that it was getting late, Secretary Song suggested taking Su Yu out for a walk. It was a rare holiday, and she couldn't just spend it all with his parents; after all, they were a couple, while she, a single woman, was the one who needed companionship the most.

"Look at you, so eager to please! Can't we even exchange a few words with Su?" Song Ma rolled her eyes at him. But thinking that her son was about to leave and that it wouldn't be easy for the two of them to see each other again, she didn't make things difficult for them. "Su, come over to visit often in the future. You should also come over when Dong isn't home. We're not strangers."

"As long as my uncle and aunt are happy, I will definitely come often."

Su Yu said with a smile.

"Happy, of course I'm happy," Song's father said in a loud voice. He loved talking to Su. This child understood everything, spoke with confidence, just like a boy.

It was already late when Su Yu left the compound. As she got on her bicycle, she glanced in the direction of Secretary Hao's house.

Since Secretary Hao retired, he has kept a low profile and seems unwilling to get involved in city affairs anymore.

After Su Yu went to university, she visited Secretary Hao. However, Secretary Hao stayed at home reading and playing chess and didn't say much.

Secretary Song's identity is rather sensitive, so it's not appropriate for her to visit him directly.

This time, thanks to Song Ma's reminder, Su Yu felt it was time to formally visit Secretary Song and get closer to her.

She tugged at Secretary Song's clothes, "In a few days, we'll go visit Secretary Hao. He's been a cadre for so many years, he definitely knows more people than you. Besides, he came here earlier than Secretary Qiu, so he has a wider network in Jiangdong. He might even know someone in Jinhe County. If he's willing to make an introduction for you, it would be very helpful."

Secretary Song said, "We will definitely make the visit, after all, she is our matchmaker. But let's put aside the matter of finding connections for now. We've only just gone down here, and I also want to test my own abilities."

Su Yu smiled and leaned against his back. He was still young and impulsive. She didn't have the leisure to try things out now; to get things done, she would stop at nothing. She would use anything that could help.

But everyone has a youthful phase. My partner is already older than her, so I can't expect him to mature overnight just because I'm old-fashioned. The process of growing up is also wonderful.

Secretary Song was somewhat absent-minded at the moment, her heart pounding wildly.

After riding the bike for a while, Su Yu remembered and asked, "Where are we going? Is it too early to eat?"

"I'll take you for a walk," Secretary Song said vaguely.

Su Yu raised an eyebrow, "Where are we going to wander around in this freezing weather?"

You'll find out soon enough.

The bicycle stopped along the way, crunching and rattling in the snow. Luckily, Su Yu was wearing many layers, and there was a windproof shield in front of her, so she wasn't cold.

I rode for more than half an hour before finally stopping.

Su Yu got out of the car, and Secretary Song parked it at the entrance. Then he led her to open a courtyard gate.

As soon as the door opened, Su Yu's eyes lit up.
