Chapter 22

The textile factory wasn't too big, and news of Su Yu being in the newspaper quickly spread throughout the entire factory.

Including this time, this is the second time Su Yu has been in the newspaper. The last time it was in the factory's newspaper, so the impact wasn't as big. This time is different. It's in the provincial capital's newspaper! That's something everyone in the province can see. Maybe even the whole country can see it.

Back when televisions weren't common, being featured in a newspaper was much rarer and more impressive than appearing on television.

Especially when the person featured in the newspaper is one of your own working colleagues. It feels almost like a celebrity has appeared in your neighborhood.

The older folks in the factory gradually changed their impression of Su Yu from an unknown textile worker and an older unmarried woman to an image of a promising young woman.

Can you get published in a newspaper if you don't have the ability? Of course not!

In the past, if you asked who Su Yu was in the textile factory, not many people would know her. Now, if you ask Su Yu in the whole factory, everyone knows that she is someone who has written articles and been published in newspapers.

Su Dazhi and Su Zhi both benefited from it.

While working, Su Zhi boasted to everyone, "My sister was a natural at studying. If it weren't for taking care of us siblings, she might be a college student by now. She's a class leader in school, the class monitor. Do you know what a class monitor is? It's someone who's in charge of all the students."

An old man joked, "Zhi, why don't you study? Your sister can study, why don't you?"

"I'm a man, I'm all grown up, do you think I can rely on my sister to support me?" Su Zhi said without batting an eye. Anyway, as long as there's someone in the family who can study, that's enough.

"Your sister's hard work over the years has really paid off."

"Of course, we all know how good my sister is," Su Zhi said proudly. He wasn't ungrateful; he knew how good his sister was.

Back at the warehouse, Su Dazhi was also asked by several colleagues about his eldest sister's glorious deeds.

Hearing everyone's praise, he felt incredibly proud. He used to feel ashamed because his family was poor, but now he felt triumphant. "My sister loves reading books and newspapers and studying on her own. Even though she didn't go to high school, her handwriting is better than many college students. Even our fourth brother can't write like that. My sister is capable; she's just held back because of us kids."

After saying this, Su Dazhi felt even more guilty towards his older sister. If he had been more sensible back then and helped his sister with the household chores, perhaps his sister could have made something of herself sooner.

This home will be even better.

They're the ones who dragged my older sister down.

Su Lin from the school and Liu Mei, the apprentice at the steel factory, were both proud of each other. They boasted about it, feeling that having such an older sister was a great source of pride.

As the person involved, Su Yu was quite low-key. Aside from being excited for a while when she shared the good news with Director Xu, she remained very low-key and basically didn't talk about it anymore.

After all, a good thing is something to be excited about the first time, and exciting the second time. But by the third or fourth time, it starts to lose its flavor and easily makes people think it's a bad thing. Originally, her articles were meant to express her progressive thinking, so she couldn't let people think she was someone who craved fame and fortune.

The women working alongside her even sought her out to discuss her newspaper article. "You've been spinning cloth with us all, when did you learn to write articles and get published in the newspaper? Why don't we have that ability?"

His tone carried a hint of envy and jealousy.

Su Yu laughed and said, "It's nothing special. If you think about it, maybe it'll work. I was just trying it out back then. It's good that society is good now, otherwise how would people like us have a chance to get our articles published in the newspaper? Even if we write something brilliant, nobody would read it. I don't have any other ideas, I just want to work hard. Getting published in the newspaper can't be something you do all by yourself."

Hearing Su Yu's words, those who had initially felt somewhat estranged from her because of her newspaper appearances suddenly felt that Su Yu was still a comrade in their social circle, someone they considered part of the same group. So everyone resumed their lighthearted gossip, and no one brought up Su Yu's situation anymore.

However, some people planned to go back and teach their children to write and publish articles. Surely, even Su Yu has done it, and these schoolchildren don't yet have the ability.

Seeing everyone's attitude gradually returning to normal, Su Yu felt even better. As a good comrade, how could we become detached from the masses? How could we become estranged from our dear working-class brothers and sisters?

Even if she changes jobs in the future, she will still rely on these frontline workers.

Sigh, I don't know if I'm ready yet. If it doesn't work out, I'll just have to wait until after the National Day holiday to get my graduation certificate and try to get a job at the factory.

Right now, Committee Member Hu from the union is applying to Chairman Sun to have Comrade Su Yu work there as her assistant. The factory newspaper and external publicity activities are numerous, but the entire union only has two staff members, and they haven't been of much help to her in these areas. Seeing Su Yu available, she's quite satisfied.

"She has beautiful handwriting and can write well. Most importantly, she can grasp the key points. I have read all her articles, and she has accurately captured the central idea. We who are in the propaganda field need to focus on the core ideas, and Comrade Su Yu is very suitable for this."

Chairman Sun was a man in his late fifties. He rarely concerned himself with the affairs of the women in the textile factory; his main role was to communicate with the higher-ups in the labor union. Therefore, he wasn't very familiar with Su Yu.
