There's a working meal provided for those attending this meeting, since it's lunchtime and we can't just send everyone back to eat as soon as the meeting ends.
Su Yu was also fortunate enough to get a free meal at the municipal party committee canteen. The food there was quite good; at noon, she could have two cornbreads, a bowl of egg drop soup, and a dish of cabbage and sliced pork. It was even better than what she ate during the Chinese New Year.
Chairman Sun served himself his meal, but when Su Yu got soup, she helped him get a bowl, which made the other leaders incredibly envious. They thought Chairman Sun had found a really good secretary; she managed both official and personal matters so well.
Chairman Sun deliberately said, "Su, go eat by yourself, don't worry about me. It's after get off work hours now, I can take care of my own things. You go and rest."
Su Yu immediately replied earnestly, "If I help you do these things, won't you have more time to do bigger things? Chairman Sun, just call me if you need anything, it's nothing."
Chairman Sun immediately felt extremely proud and pretended to complain to the others, "There's nothing I can do, he's just such an honest comrade. His ability to get things done is also beyond reproach."
Su Yu smiled shyly, picked up her rice bowl, and went to the table next to her. Secretary Zhou was watching her. She was determined to build a good relationship with him, so she couldn't let the opportunity slip by.
Anyway, the steel mill was going to hold a meeting in the afternoon, and invited several union chairpersons from various units to attend, just to make a show of it. Chairman Sun was also there, so Su Yu had an excuse to follow this Secretary Zhou.
Secretary Zhou was still thinking about Su Yu's previous praise of him, and was in a good mood. When he saw her coming over, he introduced Su Yu to the others, "This is Chairman Sun's secretary at the textile factory. She's very capable. Their leader always praises her."
The people who had been talking to him earlier all looked at Su Yu. The fat secretary, Zhu, said, "Hey, I've never seen you before."
Su Yu said, "Our Chairman Sun rarely brings people along. This situation is special." As for her being the temporary secretary, she didn't intend to reveal that. A shared identity would make things more intimate, after all.
She glanced at the people at the table without changing her expression. The other two people who had been talking with Secretary Zhou by the window were also there, indicating that these people had a good relationship.
No wonder. That Secretary Gao works for the transportation company, which manages all the vehicles in the provincial capital—a huge organization. The steel mill, no longer needed, is a state-owned enterprise that supports a quarter of Dongcheng's population. And the state-run restaurant is even more so; it manages so much lucrative business that it can sometimes challenge high-ranking officials.
Therefore, these senior secretaries disdain contacting secretaries in other organizations because they feel it's unnecessary.
If I hadn't gotten in touch with Secretary Zhou, I probably wouldn't have had a chance to talk to them.
After asking her question, Secretary Zhu didn't continue the conversation with Su Yu. Instead, she started chatting with Secretary Gao. Su Yu then asked curiously, "Secretary Zhou, do you come to meetings often?"
"Yes, we're always on the go. We're very busy," Secretary Zhou said proudly.
Su Yu said, "No wonder you are so capable at work. I saw that you took notes very quickly. While I was busy on my side, you had already finished taking notes."
Secretary Zhou felt even more proud. Receiving praise from others, especially from female colleagues, was a wonderful thing. "I also learned it through practice. You can't learn this overnight. You have to train your reaction ability frequently."
Seeing that Secretary Zhou had spoken, Secretary Zhu started to chat again, "We're actually pretty much the same, I remember things very quickly too. Old Gao remembers things very quickly too, doesn't he?"
Secretary Gao was older and more composed. He didn't say much, just nodded.
Su Yu looked at them with admiration, "You are all seniors. As the saying goes, 'Among three people walking together, there must be one who can teach me.' I have to learn a lot from you. If Chairman Sun complains that I did not do well, that would be embarrassing."
"This requires careful consideration," Secretary Zhu said smugly.
"If you can get points like this, how could I not?" Su Yu thought to herself, but smiled and said, "I believe that. By the way, is Mayor Qiu's secretary also very capable? Otherwise, how could she become Mayor Qiu's secretary at such a young age? Looking at you guys, I feel ashamed of myself."
"Secretary Song? Of course! His memory is amazing." Secretary Zhu said earnestly, "You see, Mayor Qiu speaks quite quickly, but Secretary Song can always remember every single word. Isn't that amazing?"
“Impressive!” Su Yu nodded.
No wonder he's doing so well; he must have some skills. If he can talk big, he must have the ability to do so.
Secretary Zhou immediately replied, "I'm very familiar with Secretary Song." He quickly earned Su Yu's admiring gaze.
"Why hasn't Secretary Song eaten?"
"He went to report on his work; he's very busy. Busier than us," Secretary Zhu said.
At the next table, Chairman Sun watched as Su Yu got along well with the secretaries of several important units and seemed quite happy, and smiled with satisfaction. He thought to himself, "When I used to bring Lin out, Lin would always just follow behind me, and even at meals, she would eat alone. She didn't know how to build relationships with anyone."
I didn't expect Su to meet these people on her very first day out. That's great.
Inside the office of the Deputy Mayor, Secretary Song was diligently reporting on the work, taking notes of the key points raised by various departments. After the report, Mayor Qiu asked, "It seems the situation in various departments isn't very good either. Although we're not in a severely affected area, we are indeed running out of food."
Secretary Song said, "Yes, I talked to Zhu at the state-run restaurant. The supply at the state-run restaurant is getting worse and worse than before. If I want to eat at the Oriental Restaurant, I have to ask Zhu to make a reservation in advance so I can get some Fuqiang noodles. Before, no matter when I went to eat, the state-run restaurant always had some in stock. And at the steel mill, Zhou's work efficiency has also been lower than before, and the canteen supply is getting less and less. Before, a person could eat four liang (200 grams) per meal, but now they can only eat three liang (150 grams), and I estimate that it will be reduced to two liang (100 grams) in a while. I haven't asked about other factories, but if the big factories are like this, the situation is probably not good either."
