Su Yu thought that running into Secretary Song on this day of bidding farewell to the old year and welcoming the new might mean that she would have many opportunities to interact with Secretary Song in the coming year.
This is not a good sign. She's planning to find another powerful patron next year. She can't keep hanging on to this crooked tree forever.
He shook his head and sighed inwardly, but his face remained beaming with a cheerful smile. "Oh, Secretary Song, Happy New Year! What a coincidence that you're here on such an important day!"
Secretary Song nodded to himself.
This is quite a coincidence. We were supposed to meet during the New Year, but it had to be now. Couldn't we have waited a little longer? How can we save face for him now?
He pursed his lips. "Comrade Su, have you eaten?"
"Eat, eat! What time is it?" Su Yu said with a smile. "Secretary Song, what are you doing here?"
"Just browsing," Secretary Song said.
How did he know what he was there for? He just couldn't sit still after dinner at home, so he went out for a stroll and ended up at the watch counter.
Su Yu smiled and said, "I'm also here to buy a watch. It's really inconvenient not having a watch all the time. My younger siblings feel sorry for me, so they let me come out and buy myself a New Year's gift."
The sales clerk behind the counter leaned against it and said, "Gentlemen, would you like to look at your watches?"
"I want to see, I want to see," Su Yu quickly said. "Which of your watches are good?"
The sales clerk glanced at her attire and asked, "What category and grade do you want?"
"..." Su Yu realized she'd become a complete country bumpkin. She couldn't even understand the basics of watches; she should have done her research before coming out. How could she possibly know what category or grade of watches she liked?
Secretary Song leaned over and said, "Do you want a Rolex or an IWC? Or maybe an Audemars Piguet or a Longines? Jaeger-LeCoultre, Cosmopolitan, or even a Roman Michelin Manufacture would be fine."
Upon hearing these watch brands, Su Yu understood; it meant that watches were now categorized into different levels.
"What price range is this type of watch?"
"The cheapest one from Wan Guo and Lao Zai is 540, while the cheapest one from Ou Ji is 420."
Su Yu: "..." They're so poor they can't even afford a watch.
Secretary Song said to the sales clerk, "Could you please bring out this plum blossom watch for her to see? Why buy such an expensive watch? I haven't bought one yet!"
Su Yu: "..." Did I hear that right? Secretary Song is making fun of herself.
The saleswoman glanced at Secretary Song, smirked, and thought to herself, "This guy really has no shame. What's so great about a watch if you can't afford an expensive one?"
However, I still helped him get out a Plum Blossom watch. It had a brown leather strap, a silver-white dial, and a Plum Blossom logo on it.
The salesperson said, "Wan Guo is something that ordinary people can't afford."
Secretary Song looked at the Plum Blossom watch and said, "This one is not bad; many women like it. Just buy something that's popular. Look at the watch salesmen; they don't buy anything that expensive, and it's not as good as yours."
Salesperson: "..."
Su Yu glanced at Secretary Song, her eyes filled with admiration. Very good, she even knows to unite against a common enemy at crucial moments.
She nodded and said, "That's right. People all over the country are now living frugally and simply, and we should learn from that spirit. Watches can be categorized by class, but people absolutely cannot be categorized by class. Only capitalists in the old society would categorize people by class!"
The sales clerk wiped her brow. "Will this be alright?"
Su Yu said, "We're not that particular, so we'll just buy this one."
She was about to put it on her hand. Secretary Song rolled her eyes at her rude manner, then reached out and helped her put it on.
Her slightly rounded wrists appeared even whiter after she put on the watch.
Su Yu said with satisfaction, "Not bad, it looks pretty good."
Secretary Song glanced at it and said, "It's mainly because the watch is nice-looking. I have good taste."
"..." Su Yu glanced at him silently. If it weren't for the fact that he had just sided with her, she would definitely have retorted.
Never mind, adults don't hold grudges.
She said directly to the sales clerk, "I'll give you an invoice, I'll take this." Then she started taking out industrial invoices, foreign exchange certificates, and money.
The sales clerk breathed a sigh of relief, then quickly issued the invoice, eager to get the job done and get the two people out of there as soon as possible. Running into these two during the New Year was truly bad luck.
Even though it's cheap, it's not inexpensive either. A watch costs over two hundred, which is almost as much as a bicycle.
As Su Yu took out her money, Secretary Song patted his own pockets and realized he didn't have much.
After buying the watch, Su Yu said, "Secretary Song, I'll be going now. It's so cold, I need to go back and rest."
Secretary Song, hands in her pockets, followed beside her. "You rarely come out, what's the rush? Aren't you going to look at anything else?"
"I'm not looking anymore. Buying a watch would empty our savings. We're poor." Su Yu waved her hand. Money should be spent wisely, not recklessly.
Secretary Song pursed her lips, feeling uneasy. They had just been helping her, and now they were using her and throwing her away. They were truly heartless and insincere.
He must have been out of his mind to speak up for her.
You should step on it!
Fortunately, Su Yu finally noticed that Secretary Song was sullen. She could feel the grievance in her eyes.
So what if he didn't go shopping with me? He's upset about that? A grown man, and he actually enjoys shopping so much…
"Secretary Song, would you like to take another look?"
Upon hearing this, Secretary Song glanced at her and said, "Actually, I didn't really want to go shopping either, but it's the Lunar New Year, and the malls are crowded. I mainly wanted to observe how everyone's living conditions are. You're also a prospective Party member, so you should learn to care about the lives of the people."
