Back home, Secretary Song began flipping through her notebook. It contained notes on some of Su Yu's habits. For example, Su Yu preferred to drink lightly brewed tea, ideally with it slightly hot so she could savor the aroma with each sip.
Another thing is that her chair must have a soft cushion, and there must be a backrest cushion. I don't know why, but she's just very particular. If this were the old society, she probably would have even hired several people to massage her shoulders and legs.
She's not a picky eater and eats everything. But she eats very little spicy food; she never eats chili peppers when eating seafood.
And so on...
Secretary Song swore that he had never been this attentive during his two years as Mayor Qiu's secretary.
He was still pondering this carefully during dinner that evening.
It's been so long, and he still hasn't won her over. He also doesn't know how Comrade Su feels about him. The only time he saw Lingying, she brought her child along.
Seeing that he had no appetite, Song's mother patted the table. "Dong, time to eat. What are you thinking about?"
"He definitely wants a female comrade," said Song's father.
Secretary Song: "..."
Song's mother chuckled and said, "It's alright, it's only natural for Dong to want a girlfriend. He's all grown up now, he can get married anytime soon. By the way, Dong, when are you bringing your girlfriend home? I heard you're dating that woman from the textile factory?"
Secretary Song looked horrified. "Mom, what are you doing? There's nothing between us. You and others know the truth!" She hadn't even won him over yet; she couldn't ruin his reputation. What if it didn't work out? How would Comrade Su face anyone afterward?
"Oh, then I made a mistake." Song's mother nodded. Of course, she didn't listen; she was just using the same method she had used to interrogate traitors to test her son.
Judging from his appearance, it's clear that it's not settled yet.
"Dong, if you fancy a woman, you should boldly pursue her, understand?"
Secretary Song pursed her lips, "...What if they refuse?" They used to always argue and bicker with each other.
"Coward," Song's father snorted.
Song's mother kicked him under the table, then continued to speak to her son, "Dong, as a woman, I have to teach you. Show your sincerity; only genuine feelings can move a woman."
Secretary Song said, "What if it's not even true love?"
"That means they don't like you. You'd better stop bothering them, or you'll just be being a scoundrel," said Mr. Song.
Secretary Song looked at his mother, who was silent for a moment before nodding resolutely, "Your father's words may be rough, but they make sense."
"..."
The Su family is also having dinner.
This year's harvest wasn't great, but Su Yu used her connections with a transportation company to bring back some grain, enough to feed the family at least nine-tenths full. In the provincial capital, that's considered quite a comfortable life.
Watching her family eat, Su Yu silently calculated in her mind, "Fifty years... fifty years from now, everything will be completely different."
From an era where having enough to eat meant happiness, we've moved to an era where leftovers are thrown away.
The family was having dinner when Deputy Director Tian came to visit. She also lives in the textile factory area.
"Hey, Tian's here. Want to have dinner together?" Su Yu greeted him warmly.
Deputy Director Tian quickly waved her hand, saying that grain is precious and no one would dare to eat from someone else's house, especially Director Su's. She was worried that if she ate it, she would have to pay double the price.
"No need, no need. I'm just here to deliver a message. Someone called the factory committee today. It was your former accounting teacher, Ms. Xu. She said the matter you entrusted to me has been taken care of. That's all."
Hearing the news from Deputy Director Tian, Su Yu was overjoyed. The college entrance examination registration issue was resolved.
She happily pulled Deputy Director Tian along, saying, "Tian, you've worked hard, have some. Come on, let's go inside and eat. What kind of relationship do we have? I'd rather eat less than not give you any."
Hearing Su Yu's words, Deputy Director Tian ran even faster, "Really not eating? I have to go."
They ran away as soon as they finished.
Su Yu: "..." Seriously, why did you run away so fast when I invited you to dinner?
Su Zhi came out carrying a bowl and chopsticks. "Sis, what's up?"
"Oh, it's nothing, I've already signed up."
"Sis, are you going to take the college entrance exam?" Su Zhi asked excitedly. "Sis, let's celebrate! We'll have meat tomorrow."
Su Yu nodded and went inside to tell Su Lin, "Lin, go to the supply and marketing cooperative tomorrow and buy two ounces of meat. I want to have lean meat noodles to celebrate."
"Sister, what about us?" Su Zhi asked expectantly.
Su Yu glanced at him and said, "It's my college entrance exam, what does it have to do with you guys? None of you are working hard, making me, at my age, have to study and fight for my future, and you still have the nerve to eat meat! Aren't you ashamed?"
The Su family: "..."
The next morning, Su Yu went to the supply and marketing cooperative and bought half a pound of meat and two pounds of flour, then went to Teacher Xu's house.
Teacher Xu looked at the things she brought and refused to accept them no matter what. "You already took them during the New Year, what kind of behavior is this?"
"I feel embarrassed to come empty-handed as a student."
Su Yu said with a smile. If it weren't for Teacher Xu taking care of her, her studies wouldn't have gone so smoothly. She couldn't help in other ways, but she still wanted to show her respect by providing food.
Teacher Xu shook her head, got up and went to her bedside table, where she gathered a bunch of accounting books for Su Yu to take back and read.
"I don't know what major you want to study, but reading these books will always be helpful."
Su Yu didn't stand on ceremony and Gao Xin accepted it. Learning more is always a good thing.
Teacher Xu asked, "Which school are you planning to apply to?"
"I want to study at Jiangdong University." This school is considered one of the top schools in the provincial capital.
