Chapter 75

Su Yu kept nodding. "Yes, yes, I'll listen to your nonsense."

The two then went to the fabric and clothing stores. These two places were still quite crowded. Tomorrow is the first day of the Lunar New Year, and many people are taking advantage of this time to buy clothes to wear tomorrow.

Seeing the huge crowds rushing to buy things, Su Yu couldn't help but marvel at the nation's purchasing power. They're always poor, unable to afford food or clothes. But wherever food and clothing are sold, there's always a buying frenzy.

Secretary Song was about to move closer to the clothing section when Su Yu pulled her aside. "Secretary Song, let's just look around. Aren't you worried about the crowds?"

She didn't want to go in and be squeezed into a meat pie.

Secretary Song glanced at her sideways and said, "Are you even a woman? Can't you see that other people want to buy new clothes?"

Su Yu smiled at him, "I'm with you, Secretary Song, aren't I? Look, the other men aren't crowding in either. If I brought you along, you'd lose face, Secretary Song."

Secretary Song: "..."

Having said all that, neither of them showed any intention of going any closer, so they simply turned around and went downstairs.

As Secretary Song walked downstairs, she felt frustrated, wondering why she had chosen to go shopping with this woman. She'd only brought trouble upon herself.

Just as I turned the corner and was about to leave, I saw the imported goods counter downstairs.

Because they needed foreign exchange certificates, there weren't many people at this counter.

Su Yu looked at the items displayed there; they were just trinkets. These things used to be commonplace. But now, they were openly displayed on the counter, earning the country a large amount of foreign exchange.

Seeing her staring blankly at the imported goods counter, Secretary Song leaned over to look as well. "What's on your mind?"

"Look at the differences between these products made abroad and those made in China."

"There's not much difference; we don't have these things in China yet." There was a hint of frustration in his voice.

Su Yu said confidently, "There will come a time when we will do better than them. In the future, foreigners will also buy our products. The whole world will use our Chinese-made products."

Silence fell over the area.

Su Yu turned around and saw Secretary Song staring straight at her.

She asked awkwardly, "Secretary Song, what did I do wrong?"

Secretary Song coughed, then glanced at the imported goods counter. "It's nothing. I just suddenly realized that you have a strong sense of patriotism and a really high level of awareness."

The whole world uses Chinese-made products; that shows how high their awareness is...

He dared not even think about it. He only hoped that everyone could have enough to eat and wear new clothes.

Su Yu said confidently, "I'm a probationary member of the Communist Party! Being aware of my position is a must."

As Secretary Song left the mall, she noticed some scarves and neck warmers being sold at the entrance counter. She guessed they'd already been snapped up and there weren't many left.

He leaned over and casually picked up a pair of brown leather gloves. The gloves were large, a full size larger than his own hands.

Su Yu glanced at it and reminded her, "Okay."

The sales clerk at the counter smiled and said, "This came from Shanghai. It was just put on display."

Secretary Song said, "Take a pair."

The sales clerk smiled and immediately issued the invoice.

Su Yu asked, "Secretary Song, is this for your mother?"

Secretary Song: "..."

After paying and getting the ticket, Secretary Song stormed out with the gloves in hand. Once outside, he shoved the things into Su Yu's hands, saying, "We bumped into each other during the New Year, if I didn't buy you something, people would be angry with me."

Su Yu: "..." So nice, buying her things? She tentatively asked, "Secretary Song, why are you so kind?"

"I've always been this nice!" Secretary Song said angrily. "It's nothing expensive, take it. Consider it a New Year's gift. I came out and didn't buy anything, I'm not happy about it."

Su Yu pushed it away, saying, "But I really can't accept it." She wasn't used to receiving gifts from men.

Secretary Song said, "Comrade Su, don't worry, I've bought gifts for Zhou and Gao before. It's just my style; I enjoy buying gifts for people!"

Su Yu: "..." This habit is really bizarre.

She thought for a moment and said, "Okay, Secretary Song, wait for me a moment." Then she ran into the mall.

Secretary Song watched her retreating figure and muttered, "Can I not wait for you? You don't have a bicycle, so I still have to take you."

Soon, Su Yu ran out, carrying a pair of black leather gloves. She immediately handed them to Secretary Song.

"Secretary Song, I'll also give you a New Year's gift." This settled the matter, and neither of them took advantage of the other.

Secretary Song stared blankly at the leather gloves in her hand, her face showing unease.

Then he silently took off his own gloves and put on the new ones. "They're alright, they fit pretty well. They're passable."

Su Yu also took off her woolen gloves and put on the new ones. They were much warmer than the gloves she had knitted herself.

Seeing that Su Yu had also put on gloves, Secretary Song suddenly felt much better. Pushing the cart, she said, "Let's go, I'll take you home. It's not easy to travel during the New Year."

Su Yu looked at him and said, "Secretary Song, it's so cold, aren't you going home?"

"I'm going to stroll around the streets and see how everyone's Spring Festival is going," Secretary Song said with a serious expression.

Su Yu then sat on the back of the bicycle. She suddenly realized that Secretary Song wasn't actually that bad. In principle, he wasn't a completely crooked tree either.
