Chapter 60

No one expected that Secretary Song would fall ill.

In the dead of winter, Su Yu, the female comrade, is perfectly fine, but Secretary Song has actually fallen ill from the cold.

Secretary Song couldn't eat the dishes he had ordered before; his mouth had no taste, and everything tasted bitter. So we had to make him a bowl of wontons separately.

The others began to eat their food heartily.

While eating, Su Yu said with concern, "Secretary Song, you must take care of your health even if you are working. Don't neglect your health by working day and night. Health is the foundation of everything."

Secretary Song swallowed a wonton. "It's getting cold. I have to go around with the leaders to check on the people. It's not as good as you guys staying cooped up in the office."

The others were a little embarrassed; it was the dead of winter, and they were indeed holed up in the office.

Su Yu protested, "Although I'm sitting in the office, I'm always thinking about the workers in our factory, about the people. As the saying goes, my body is in the office, but my heart is in the snow. My heart is always cold and desolate."

The others burst into laughter upon hearing this. Secretary Su's words were truly witty.

The atmosphere immediately relaxed.

Secretary Song couldn't help but roll her eyes at her. "I didn't know you felt so cold inside, Secretary Su, but you seem to be in good spirits lately, like you've recovered."

Su Yu chuckled inwardly. "How did my recovery bother you? I didn't eat any of your food!"

"What? She's wearing a red scarf. Red suits people." She touched her warm scarf. "Secretary Song, if you like it, I'll trade with you."

Secretary Song's scarf around her neck is pure wool. Handmade pure wool, the quality is excellent. It's better than my own handmade yarn. Besides, Liu Mei's skills are just average; the scarves she knits are only so-so.

Unfortunately, Secretary Song didn't understand and covered herself up tightly with her scarf. "No need, I'm already sick."

Secretary Zhu, worried that Su Yu might feel awkward, smiled and said, "Secretary Su, I'll switch with you."

Secretary Song said, "Why change it? You're a man, aren't you afraid of being laughed at for wearing red?"

Su Yu said, "Secretary Song, this is Chinese red, which can be used by all Chinese people."

"..." Secretary Song curled her lips into a smirk. A mere excuse!

Let's change the subject. "What were you guys talking about just now?"

Before Secretary Zhu could speak, Su Yu said, "It's the dead of winter, so let's talk about food, clothing, shelter, and transportation. Everything is fine now, except for a means of transportation. I'm always incredibly envious when I see Secretary Song riding a bicycle."

Hearing Su Yu say this, Secretary Song finally felt a little smug.

He is a man who owns a car.

"It's nothing really, it's just a bicycle."

Su Yu said enviously, "For you, a bicycle is just a vehicle, but for our unit, it's something we can only dream of. We can't buy one even if we have the money."

"How could we not be able to buy it? I'll buy it for you later..." Secretary Song immediately stopped talking. Oh no, she's so sick she's even confused.

Su Yu was overjoyed. "Secretary Song, really? You're so kind. Thank you so much! On behalf of the entire Su family, I express our sincere gratitude to you."

Secretary Song: "..."

Everyone else stared back and forth at the two of them. This wasn't normal; when had Secretary Song become so helpful? Normally, getting a single sentence out of someone during a meal was harder than getting an answer from her.

It seems that Secretary Su and Secretary Song have a very good relationship.

The three of them looked at Su Yu differently now. If getting through to Secretary Song didn't work out, they could always try a roundabout approach.

Secretary Zhou said with a smile, "Come on, eat your food. Secretary Su, you should eat more too. After all, Secretary Song can't eat today."

"I can't eat it, so why let her eat more?" Secretary Song raised an eyebrow.

Su Yu picked up a piece of meat and said as she ate, "Because I can eat a lot. I can't let it go to waste. Secretary Song, get well soon, and eat more next time too."

Then, looking at Secretary Song ingratiatingly, he said, "Secretary Song, eat more wontons. Eat your fill; a full stomach in this cold winter will help you recover quickly. You fell ill because of the people, so you must take care of yourself."

Secretary Song then continued eating her wontons.

I'm quite frustrated with my health. I get sick every winter. No matter how good the food I eat, it doesn't change anything.

After dinner, Secretary Gao and the others continued chatting with Secretary Song. Just like Secretary Song, the important thing wasn't the meal itself, but the conversation that took place during the meal.

At least that's how it is for Secretary Gao and Secretary Zhou.

Since everyone was an acquaintance and in the same boat, and given Su Yu's apparent good relationship with Secretary Song, Secretary Gao didn't hold back and directly complained, "Secretary Song, our transportation company is under a lot of pressure right now. I don't know if the municipal party committee has any plans for the future. Has the number of vehicles increased? Our transportation company has been racking our brains lately. The boss is constantly looking for people; his hair has turned white."

Secretary Song coughed a few times, looking like he couldn't breathe. "I'm not aware of the municipal party committee's arrangements. But the transportation company usually just does its job. This year, they finally helped the city solve some difficulties, and then they went to the city to ask for things. That's why they didn't handle things well."

Secretary Gao's expression changed slightly. He knew that Secretary Song was implying that they shouldn't have been looking for people everywhere.

Secretary Zhou said, "Old Gao's problem isn't urgent, but ours is much bigger. The steel mill desperately needs coal, but we have to keep urging them to supply it on time. They just want us to lend them grain. The transportation company gave them a lot of grain last time, and they're still coming to us. Now the factory is in a very passive position."
