Inside the city's residential compound, Vice Mayor Xu's wife was complaining at home about how unfair the Chen family was. She had, after all, contributed her efforts. Sending two incompetent people to the city's secretariat put her under considerable pressure, even in a powerful department. So many eyes were watching.
Taking such a big risk was all to cultivate a good relationship with Mayor Chen. That way, her husband could have more influence in the city.
Who knew that the Chen family would take advantage of them and then turn their backs on them?
"I'll go find Xu Shufen later."
Xu Shufen is Mayor Chen's wife, a true housewife. If it weren't for her husband being the mayor, Vice Mayor Xu's wife wouldn't even want to associate with her.
Vice Mayor Xu frowned and said, "Why are you looking for her? The way you arranged things was inappropriate to begin with. I've only just arrived, and I can't be too high-profile yet. Besides, I haven't even chosen which side to take, so why are you being so eager?"
"Why am I so proactive? Of course, it's for you. If that guy surnamed Qiu could climb from the position of deputy mayor to the position of secretary in one go, you can too."
Vice Mayor Xu remained silent. It's impossible for him to be without ambition.
"Wait a little longer, let me think about it carefully."
Vice Mayor Xu was willing to wait, but his wife was not.
When it was time to do laundry in the evening, she peeked out the window and saw Mayor Chen's wife go downstairs to the water pipe in the yard. She then deliberately carried the clothes over there.
The two greeted each other and then began doing laundry. After washing one garment, Vice Mayor Xu's wife started a conversation.
"Shufen, aren't some people just too inconsiderate?"
Mayor Chen's wife asked, "What's wrong?"
"She's just a relative of mine. She comes to my house and only eats and takes the best food. When I ask her to do something for me, she makes all sorts of excuses. If you don't want to help, you shouldn't take any benefits, right?"
"That's how it is." Mayor Chen's wife nodded. She was a housewife who didn't usually get involved in things, so she couldn't hear the barb in her words at all.
Vice Mayor Xu's wife pursed her lips in frustration, feeling that she couldn't communicate with this person anymore, and simply said, "Shufen, our relationship isn't that great anymore. At the last Standing Committee meeting, my husband Xu made a suggestion, why didn't your husband Chen help? My husband Xu just arrived and still really needs your husband Chen's help."
Upon hearing this, Mayor Chen's wife, recalling what had happened before, immediately understood.
She looked embarrassed and quickened her pace while washing the clothes. "I really didn't know. I haven't heard from my husband, Mr. Chen. You know, I rarely get involved in things."
"This isn't really a big deal. We're all neighbors, and we get along well. Helping each other out is just helping our own people, isn't it?"
Mayor Chen's wife nodded. Her relative only got the job thanks to someone else's help. Her own husband hadn't offered any assistance all these years.
But precisely because of this, she didn't dare tell Old Chen about it.
When Old Chen asked her about it last time, all she could say was that her relative had gotten the job through their own merit.
"I'm going back to talk to Old Chen about this." After saying that, she hurriedly left.
Vice Mayor Xu's wife smiled, pursed her lips, and after washing a few clothes, she prepared to go home.
Just as she went upstairs, her daughter Xu Lili also returned.
Xu Lili ran upstairs with her schoolbag slung across her shoulder. When she saw her mother, she called out excitedly, "Mom, Mom, I have something to discuss with you."
"Don't panic, go back inside if there's anything wrong." After her daughter went up the stairs, Vice Mayor Xu's wife pulled her into the house together.
Meanwhile, Mayor Chen's wife went home to hang the laundry out to dry. Seeing her husband drinking tea and reading the newspaper, she began to feel nervous. I don't know what she meant by that.

After thinking for a while, she found a topic to talk about, and while adding hot water to his cup, she asked, "Old Chen, how's your relationship with Secretary Qiu?"
Mayor Chen frowned. He and the man surnamed Qiu were incompatible.
He picked up his teacup and took a sip. "Why are you asking this?"
"I'm just worried about you. Look, you don't get along with Secretary Qiu. It'll be so hard for you to do your job in the future. I think the Xu family is a good family. Why don't we get closer to them? That way you'll have more help in the future."
"Don't talk nonsense." Mayor Chen frowned. "Why would I be getting close to someone when I'm perfectly fine? Why would a mayor like me try to curry favor with a deputy mayor?"
His wife immediately became anxious and waved her hand, saying, "That's not how it works. Maybe he just wants to get closer to you."
Mayor Chen said directly, "I didn't see that coming."
"..." Mayor Chen's wife choked.
"What if they help us?"
"What do I need his help with?" Mayor Chen asked.
Mayor Chen's wife: "...That's all. I'm going to cook. The children will be home for dinner soon."
"Hmm." Mayor Chen continued reading the internal newspaper. He added, "Don't get involved in these things unless you need to. You don't understand them, so don't ruin things."

When Su Yu heard the news from Secretary Song, she almost burst out laughing. Although Secretary Song didn't provide details, Su Yu could imagine the complicated feelings of Vice Mayor Xu and his wife.
You try to curry favor with someone, but they take the benefits without doing anything in return.
The couple probably thought Mayor Chen knew.
However, Su Yu felt that Secretary Song was right; Mayor Chen certainly didn't know. He couldn't even tolerate Secretary Shi back then, so how could he possibly commit such a crime himself?
After finishing their meal at the restaurant, the two pushed their carts onto the road. Su Yu smiled and said, "Comrade Song, your chance has come."
