The courtyard was filled with plum trees, all in full bloom, a rare and beautiful sight. Su Yu hadn't seen such beauty in a very, very long time since she had come to this era.
Everything here is simple; there are only a few trees in the park, and you can't even see transplanted flowers.
Secretary Song had already closed the courtyard gate. He pulled her inside.
Is it pretty?
Su Yu nodded, a smile appearing on her face. "It looks good."
"This is the Plum Garden in the city. I heard that it was originally the private garden of a high-ranking official. It was sealed off for a long time, and the city would only use it occasionally to receive some comrades."
As the two talked, they had already walked among the plum trees. Su Yu took a sniff and, sure enough, the fragrance was wonderful.
Secretary Song, however, had no interest in appreciating the flowers and plants; her eyes were fixed on her.
"Comrade Su, I've done my best, but there's really no other way."
Su Yu looked at him upon hearing this, "Why the sudden change?"
Secretary Song blushed and said, "You wanted flowers, and I was thinking, where would I find flowers in the dead of winter? Only plum blossoms are still worth seeing. So I was going to pick a few for you from the garden, but the old man who guards the garden absolutely refused. He said these are public property, and picking them would be undermining socialism. I thought someone as progressive as you would definitely not allow me to do such a thing, so I borrowed the key and let you stand among the plum blossoms. Consider it a gift from me to you of the whole garden of flowers. I'll bring you here whenever you want to see them."
After he finished speaking, he slowly lowered himself, his knees gradually bent, and then he knelt on one knee in the snow.
Su Yuzhen instinctively took a step back, but was pulled back by him. Secretary Song said pitifully, "I finally mustered up the courage to kneel down. What am I supposed to do if you back down?"
Su Yu chuckled. She looked at him with a smile, but didn't say a word.
Secretary Song reached into his pocket and pulled out a silver ring. The ring face was very fine, yet rough. It looked like it had just been made.
"The others are too eye-catching. Let's just make do with this one for now, and we can change to something else when the conditions are right later."
Secretary Song assured him.
Su Yu smiled and said, "I haven't even said yes or no yet, and you're already thinking about the future?"
"I did everything you asked for: flowers, a ring, and kneeling!"
"Anything else?"
"Anything else?" Secretary Song carefully considered what her partner had said before. Then, blushing, she said, "Comrade Su Yu, Chairman Mao said that dating without the intention of marriage is immoral. I'm an upright person, so please don't make me an immoral person. I promise we'll definitely be a pair of good revolutionary comrades in the future. Um, from now on, let's follow the agreement we wrote before, and I'll listen to you. How about that?"
Su Yu tilted her head, "I don't want to do laundry and cook. I heard that after marriage, I'll have to do laundry, cook, and take care of the old people in the family."
"...I'll do it. I'm actually pretty good at housework. As for cooking, I'm not so good at it... If all else fails, we can eat at the cafeteria or go out to a restaurant. Or I can cook you fish; I'm quite good at it."
Su Yu laughed upon hearing this. She had previously heard female employees at her company complain in the elevator that after getting married, neither of them wanted to cook, resulting in them eating takeout for several years. At the time, she had laughed at the young people for being irresponsible in their daily lives. Little did she know that she herself would also be reduced to eating in the cafeteria.
She held out her hand and said, "Let's see if it suits you. If it doesn't, then don't take it."
Upon hearing this, Secretary Song, beaming with delight, slipped her middle finger onto her finger.
Just right.
Then he looked at Su Yu pitifully, "Can you get up? My knees are sore from the cold."
Su Yu reached out and grabbed his arm. "Get up quickly. You really knelt down. In the middle of winter, aren't you afraid of getting rheumatism in your legs later?"
Secretary Song held her hand and said, "Don't worry, I'll still have you when I'm old."
Looking at his smug expression, and noticing the slight upturn of his red lips on his youthful face, Su Yu couldn't help but wonder, "Is anyone in this courtyard?"
"No, of course no one is there," Secretary Song affirmed. Knowing no one was there, that's why she knelt so readily.
"That's good." Su Yu then grabbed his neck and kissed him deeply.
Secretary Song was stunned for two seconds before reacting, then hugged her tightly and kissed her back.
He just kept rubbing his lips together, making Su Yu's lips ache, so she simply stuck out her tongue and pried his lips open. It seemed like that's how it was shown on TV before; she had seen it that way before.
Secretary Song learned quickly, grasping the knack in no time, even more skillfully than his mentor, Su Yu. He suddenly realized that this was the real kiss. Before, it was as if he hadn't even entered the door; now, he had finally stepped inside.
They kissed for an unknown amount of time, until they were both breathless and their faces turned red before they finally let go.
The two were still tightly embracing and panting when suddenly Su Yu felt something pressing against her. She paused for a moment, then looked down.
Secretary Song also took a look, and then the two of them were both stunned.
Su Yu shoved him away with one hand, saying, "You're being indecent."
Secretary Song: "..." He didn't do it on purpose!
"I'll wait for you outside." Su Yu walked straight out the door. She felt that young people were indeed easily tempted and prone to making mistakes. This was no surprise, as marriage these days involves checking certain things, so she couldn't afford to make any mistakes.
She had barely stepped out the door when Secretary Song chased after her, her face flushed, coaxing Su Yu, "Shall we go eat?"
"Mm." Su Yu nodded.
Seeing that his partner didn't look down on him, Secretary Song was relieved. He was worried that his earlier scoundrel behavior had made his partner look down on him, so he quickly pushed the car and asked after getting in, "What do you want to eat?"
"Eat whatever you want, school is fine," Su Yu leaned against his back, her fingers secretly stroking her ring. Something she wouldn't have even glanced at before, now seemed to possess a simple and unpretentious charm.
She reached out and wrapped her arms around Secretary Song's waist, her grip tightening slightly.
Secretary Song sensed it and felt a little happy. She felt that getting engaged was indeed better than dating; her partner was closer to her than before.
"Song Dongzheng." A gentle voice called from the other person.
"Hmm?" Secretary Song responded sweetly.
"Remember what you said today. If you forget it, I'll break your legs later."
"..."
