Chapter 40

As a former top student, Su Yu had set her sights on at least Huaqiao University or Peking University before even seeing her high school textbooks. There was no reason why someone who had studied for so many years and possessed such a vast knowledge base wouldn't be able to get into a top university.

However, after seeing the textbook, Su Yu quickly changed her goal.

"One should be down-to-earth and pragmatic, taking things one step at a time. There's no need to go to Huaqiao University or Peking University. At least for many years to come, a university degree is more than enough to get by in society. There's no need to make yourself so stressed. After all, education and ability are not equivalent. A high degree is useless without ability. My abilities don't need the support of a degree at all."

She absolutely refused to admit that she couldn't pass the exam.

Su Yu walked along the road, flipping through her textbooks. She sighed silently to herself. She decided to stop thinking about anything else. At the very least, she had to get into Jiangdong University, the local university... She couldn't possibly go to a junior college.

She used to compete with so many people and still got into a top university. There's no reason for her to get worse off.

On the way back, Su Dazhi carefully examined his older sister's graduation certificate, filled with envy.

My sister is now the most educated person in our family.

"Sis, if I go to study there, will I be able to make it?"

He also attended junior high school, although he didn't graduate...

Su Yu smiled supportively, "Sure. Go back and memorize my textbook first, then do the problem set four or five times over. You should be fine."

Su Dazhi shuddered, deciding it was best not to daydream. He certainly didn't have his sister's brain.

Then I looked at the high school textbooks I was holding. I need to prepare for my college entrance exams.

How come my sister is so capable?

At that moment, Su Dazhi felt even less dignified in front of his sister.

When the two returned home, the whole family was waiting for Su Yu to come back for dinner. Knowing that Su Yu was receiving her graduation certificate today, they ate noodles with pork bone broth together that evening.

The delicious aroma had already spread throughout the entire courtyard.

Everyone's mouths were watering, and Su Lin was sucking on her saliva while keeping an eye on the iron pot on the roadside, preventing Liu Mei from sneaking a bite.

When she saw Su Yu return, she jumped up to greet her, "Sister, sister, you're finally back! Did you get your graduation certificate? Are you an outstanding graduate?" She deliberately raised her voice so that everyone in the compound could hear.

Her older sister is now a vocational school student!

Sure enough, people in the courtyard looked over. Aunt Tian said, "Su Yu, you graduated so quickly?"

"Yes," Su Yu said with a smile.

Su Lin said, "My sister only studied for a month! How amazing, how glorious! She'll be so proud to go out like that."

Aunt Tian smiled and said, "Then your sister is better at studying than you."

"..."

Su Lin followed Su Yu home, feeling dejected. Liu Mei hurriedly took her backpack, saying, "Sister, are you hungry? Is dinner ready?" She was starving! She'd been waiting so long; her stomach was growling.

"All you ever do is eat. You never care about my important matters," Su Lin complained.

Liu Mei rolled her eyes. "I was just worried that you were hungry, sister. You can eat while you eat. You're such a fuss."

Su Yu enjoyed watching the two argue; it was good. Disputes created balance. As a fulcrum of that balance, her own position would be secure.

"Alright, we're all family, what's all the arguing about? Dazhi, go help Lin prepare the meal, Liu Mei, go get me some water to wash my face. We'll talk about food later."

"Oh." Su Lin went out reluctantly to start preparing dinner. Liu Mei took a basin and went out to fetch water before returning.

Su Yu washed her face with cold water and felt a little uncomfortable. She hadn't realized she didn't have two kettles at home; it was an oversight. The weather had been warm before, so she hadn't paid attention. Now that it was cold, she needed to get one. Otherwise, it would be inconvenient to have hot water whenever she wanted. She couldn't very well wash her face with cold water in the dead of winter.

Once the noodles were on the table, Su Yu got a portion for Su Zhixian. As someone working away from home, he couldn't be treated poorly.

Finally, they got to eat the dumplings. Except for Su Yu, the other three ate them ravenously, not caring about burning themselves.

After wolfing it down, I finally finished the meal and had time to talk.

Su Lin looked at the books on the bed, flipped through them, and found they were all high school textbooks. She exclaimed in surprise, "Sis, what books are you reading? Ah, high school textbooks. Sis, are you going to high school?"

Su Yu swallowed a mouthful of noodles and said, "Is this all your sister wants? I want to go to university. Who told you to be so stupid in your studies? We don't even know if you'll be able to get into university, so the responsibility of bringing honor to our family falls on my shoulders."

"...Sister, I will work hard to get into university."

Su Yu retorted without mercy, "Those who haven't even taken the high school entrance exam have no right to make such boastful remarks."

Su Lin blushed instantly.

After Su Yu finished eating and put down her chopsticks, she got down to business. "I need to prepare for the college entrance exam. Don't ask me why. Look at all of you good-for-nothings. If I don't rely on myself, who else can I rely on? My parents' relatives don't have any powerful connections, and we don't keep in touch much anymore. As for Liu Mei's family, they're dirt poor. It's good enough that they haven't come to our house to freeload."

Liu Mei: "...Sister, our family isn't poor." My brother and sister-in-law are both factory workers.

"How can you say you're not poor? You have elderly parents to support and young children to raise. Count how many burdens you have!"

"..."

Just as Su Lin was about to smile smugly, she heard her eldest sister say, "We only have Lin as a burden in our family, so our current situation is not bad. But we can't just stop here."
