Chapter 23

"You're always thinking of them. By the way, how's your boyfriend doing? When are you getting married? You can't put this off any longer."

Sister-in-law Lin's words were quite nice. In fact, girls Su Yu's age in the compound already had children old enough to run errands.

"I'm not in a hurry. Things aren't settled at home yet, so I don't feel comfortable going out." The key is that she hasn't found the right person yet. If she found someone she likes, she'd be happy to get married right away.

"You! I was thinking you'd come to terms with things, but you're still so attached to your family. Come on, you need to be more mindful of things!" Sister-in-law Lin said, exasperated.

"Okay, I'll definitely listen to my sister-in-law's opinion and get things done as soon as possible so I can get married sooner. I know my sister-in-law is good to me."

Sister-in-law Lin felt warm inside after hearing this.

Outside the bathroom, Su Lin, who had been eagerly carrying pork to deliver to Su Yu, now silently turned around and went home, suppressing her inner turmoil.

It's all because of my family that my sister has been held back.

When Su Yu finished her conversation and returned home, her front door was already very clean and tidy.

Su Dazhi and Su Zhi were discussing how to demolish the wall and expand the house. Fortunately, it was only one side of the door that needed to be demolished, so the project wasn't too big.

Su Lin had already cooked porridge on the stove. Seeing Su Yu come out, she immediately said, "Sister, time to eat. I poached an egg for you."

Su Yu smiled and nodded, "Okay, eat well."

She had just noticed a shadow at the bathroom door; someone must be standing there. She guessed it was Su Lin. Aside from the Su family, no one else would stand at the door listening to other people's gossip.

While eating breakfast, Su Yu peeled an egg and said, "I feel like I'm feeling a bit better lately. It seems like eating good food really does help. Once I'm fully recovered, I can share good food with you all."

"Sis, eat more," Su Lin said. My sister has had it so tough.

Su Dazhi and Su Zhi nodded, "That's right, Sis, you should eat more." Sis isn't in good health and still works so hard for the family, she should eat more. If Sis gets better, things will get better for the family.

Even Liu Mei can't come up with any other ideas right now.

Her sister-in-law has arranged everything for them. And she always protects her at home, what can she possibly do?

The key issue is that the older sister-in-law's health was negatively affected by her family's actions. She's also embarrassed.

Su Yu smiled contentedly and popped the egg into her mouth. She felt like she'd gained weight in her face recently. Her skin was also starting to improve. After all, this era hadn't been plagued by pollution yet; as long as she got enough nutrition, her skin would only get better.

It's finally getting better and better.

As someone who will be frequently in the public eye in the future, how can I not have a good appearance?

Eat plenty of dumplings for lunch!

In the morning, Su Dazhi and his brother continued tidying up the house, while Su Yu stayed home reading.

Seeing that she had no intention of going out, Su Lin couldn't help but say, "Sis, aren't you going out for a walk? Isn't Brother Guozhi on vacation too?"

Su Yu raised an eyebrow. Oh, so he's starting to care about her important life events.

She smiled and said, "No rush."

Then he lowered his head and continued reading.

Although she wasn't in a rush, Su Lin couldn't help but feel anxious. How could this be? She wasn't even spending enough time with Guozhi; when would they ever get married?

...

Inside the staff quarters of the provincial machinery factory, Wu Guozhi was combing his hair.

His mother, Old Lady Wu, was sewing clothes nearby, occasionally pricking her scalp with the needle tip, and then glancing up at her son from time to time.

“My dear Guozhi, what are you doing? If it were me, I would have gone for that Su family girl. She’s an honest and kind person. I heard that she was in the newspaper a few days ago. Bringing her back would bring honor to our family. It’s just that the family has a heavy burden… But her younger brother is already married, so she, as the older sister, should be fine.”

Wu Guozhi smirked, "He's too stupid."

It's disgustingly stupid. They actually thought making him pay for the meal would save face for him. They completely humiliated him. When he went to work at the factory, people still brought it up – he took a female colleague out to eat and almost couldn't pay.

Old Mrs. Wu glared and said, "It's good that she's a little simple-minded. A daughter-in-law like that is easy to control. Society is different now than before. Women have changed. They have all sorts of new ideas. Women with some ability can make their mothers-in-law feel inferior. I'm not satisfied with the girl your brother is dating. If you marry her, she won't be easy to control."

Wu Guozhi certainly understood this principle; otherwise, he wouldn't have chosen a woman like Su Yu. But Su Yu was simple-minded, lacked any femininity, was skin and bones, and came from a poor family. He felt somewhat unwilling to spend his life with her.

He is getting old, but it's not impossible for him to find a good one.

Sun Min, the apprentice in the factory, is quite good. He's young, and once he becomes a full-time employee, he'll also be able to receive government-supplied food rations.

The key is that it's a bit difficult. Young girls aren't so easy to pursue.

Seeing that he remained silent, Old Lady Wu frowned and said, "What are you thinking? You're so old and still not looking for someone. Do you expect me to take care of you for the rest of your life? Find a wife soon so I can finally have some peace and quiet." She had her eye on the one from the Su family; she had taken care of her younger siblings for so many years, she was sure to be a good wife.

The eldest daughter-in-law's job is to take care of the family elders, right?

Wu Guozhi had been raised by his mother since she was a widow, and he didn't dare to upset her, so he quickly promised, "Mom, I guarantee I'll find you a good wife. She'll be perfect in every way, and she'll make you proud."

Old Mrs. Wu said, "I don't expect much. As long as your brother brings me honor, that's enough. I just want you to find someone who can serve me well and get back at me."
