Grandma Zhou was quite happy, especially when she heard that Su Yu was an elderly couple from her hometown; she was delighted. As an old woman from the countryside, she wasn't entirely comfortable living in the city's residential compound. She was also worried that people wouldn't understand her.
"Alright," Su Yu began to give a heads-up, "but there's one person I need to remind the old lady about."
Director Zhou's wife asked worriedly, "Is he a problematic person?" She didn't want to push her mother-in-law and stepson into a fire pit.
Su Yu sighed, "They're actually relatives of ours. The Liu family. The rest of their family is fine, but that Aunt Liu can't stand seeing others do well. Her niece is my younger brother's wife. When my brother's wife first came to our house, she stirred things up and caused a huge fight, almost ruining our family. I won't say much more, but I just can't like people who instigate their wives to cause trouble in their husband's family. So our relationship has always been bad. When I moved, I was worried she'd ask me for the house, so I lied and said I'd already sold it. Auntie, could you help me cover up that lie too? It's been sold a long time ago."
"Of course, I don't like that kind of person either!" As a mother-in-law, Grandma Zhou also disliked people who stirred up trouble between her husband's family.
Su Yu smiled and said, "Actually, I still trust you very much, Auntie. After all, someone who can raise someone as successful as Director Zhou must be no ordinary person."
Grandma Zhou immediately looked proud, "Of course, my son is the most successful in our village."
Director Zhou's wife watched her mother-in-law's amiable demeanor and sighed inwardly. Why did the old lady smile at everyone else but treat her daughter-in-law with such disdain?
After eliminating all potential dangers, Su Yu quickened her pace and led the two towards her house.
Su Dazhi and Su Zhi had already arrived by bicycle to tidy up the house.
My sister's house is up for sale, and to get a good price, she needs to tidy it up. It needs to be clean before anyone comes to see it, so they don't immediately want to buy it.
The Zhou family had come with Su Yu, which delayed them a little. By the time they arrived, the house had already been cleaned up; the floor was spotless after being watered and swept. The cobwebs on the roof had also been removed. The windows were open, allowing for air circulation. It had a bright and clean feel to it.
As soon as Grandma Zhou entered the house, she looked it over inside and out. Although it was a bit bigger than the house she lived in now, it wasn't by much.
The house they live in now is also a large open space divided into a one-and-a-half-bedroom apartment. She usually shares a bed with her grandson, which she doesn't mind, but as he gets older, it must be cramped. Now it's much better; with such a big room, the partition allows her grandson to sleep inside and study properly, while she sleeps outside—it's enough space. It will also be enough for his wedding later.
Su Yu smiled and said, "My four siblings and I used to live here. My sister-in-law even came from here. What do you think, Auntie?"
"Okay, that's good." Grandma Zhou smiled, her eyes crinkling.
Director Zhou's wife had no objections when she heard that the old lady was satisfied. The house wasn't big or expensive, and even if they bought it, it wouldn't be a major financial burden for the family.
Su Yu said, "If you really decide to settle down, I'll have my brother and his family help partition the house this weekend. We'll make it a one-bedroom apartment so you'll be comfortable."
Director Zhou's wife said, "How could we possibly accept this? He's old Zhou; he won't let us take advantage of him."
Su Yu laughed and said, "How can this be called taking advantage? When we sell a house, we definitely have to make sure the buyer is satisfied. Aunt Xiao and Tao Tao are living here, so I definitely have to make sure they are comfortable. Otherwise, I would be cheating them. I won't do something so dishonest."
Grandma Zhou was overjoyed to hear this; this girl was truly honest. She took Su Yu's hand and said, "Su, then I'll take it. It's all thanks to you; otherwise, it would have been really difficult to find a place."
"Don't mention it. As long as Auntie and Teacher Li are happy, that's all that matters. I just want to see everyone's lives get better and better."
And just like that, the sale of the house was settled.
Everyone in the compound had just returned from get off work and saw Su Yu bringing people to look at the house, so they asked a few questions out of curiosity.
"Su, is this the guy who bought your house?"
"Yes, we're planning to move in in a few days," Su Yu replied with a smile. She then introduced Grandma Zhou to everyone, "Grandma Zhou is such a kind person, and we get along very well. We should all look out for each other in the future."
Sister-in-law Li said, "Okay, no problem. We all live in the same compound, how can we not look after each other?"
Sister-in-law Lin said, "Don't worry, Su Yu, we, as your neighbors, will definitely help you take care of things."
Will the old lady live alone from now on?
Su Yu said, "I brought my grandson to live with me. He's studying here, and our place is close to the school. I came here specifically to accompany him so he can study well. It's all for his success."
These words made both Old Mrs. Zhou and Director Zhou's wife feel proud. One wanted to seize the family fortune, and the other didn't want to see her mother-in-law anymore; but this one sentence instantly made them seem much more respectable.
Even the two of them felt that their thoughts were the same as Su Yu's.
“They won’t sell the houses to people in our own compound, but when something happens, they think of the people in the compound. Su Yu, aren’t you being a bit disloyal?”
A somewhat sarcastic voice came over.
Upon hearing this, Old Mrs. Zhou was immediately displeased. Just as she was about to retort, Su Yu smiled and said, "Aunt Liu, we have so many old neighbors in this compound. Who would you be more satisfied with selling this house to? Would it be better to sell it to you? There's no one in our compound with such narrow-minded thoughts as you. If we were to haggle over a house like you, Aunt Liu, how could our compound have maintained harmony for so many years?"
