Chapter 19 A Thrilling Escape

My mother is a troublemaker. Luckily, my sister-in-law is capable of handling things on her own, and my brother likes her. Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to live with my mother causing trouble every day.

Niu Xiaohua smiled and ruffled her sister-in-law's yellowish hair, saying, "I need to keep this for your brother to use to find connections. Your brother's job is tiring and dangerous, and although it pays well, I feel bad for him."

Zhang Chunhua nodded, seemingly understanding but not quite.

Over there, Fan Xiaofan, bathed in the hazy moonlight, silently concealed her slender figure in the night.

As instructed by the village chief's wife, she indeed found the legendary black market in a secluded place.

It was called a black market, but only a few very vigilant people were cautiously observing. Those who bought things would quickly pay and take the goods away after spotting them.

At that time, if anyone was caught, they would be convicted of "speculation and profiteering," severely criticized, and could even lose their lives. Therefore, everyone was more cautious than anyone else.

There's no other way. Staying at home means starving to death, but if I don't risk my life to go out and find food, I'll starve to death at home.

Fan Xiaofan was visiting this legendary black market for the first time. Completely bewildered, he hadn't figured out how to get around when someone whistled, and the crowd in front of him instantly scattered.

She was still standing there, stunned, when someone kindly reminded her, "The Red Guards are coming! Run!"

He pulled her along.

She realized what was happening and, disregarding everything else, scattered with the crowd. Behind them, she could still hear the unrestrained shouts telling them to stop, but no one dared to stop—it was a matter of life and death.

In an instant, under the cover of night, everyone disappeared without a trace, seemingly without a trace.

But Fan Xiaofan wasn't from here, and it was his first time here. In his panic, he ran into a dead end, and the Red Guards behind him were about to catch up...

Fan Xiaofan's heart nearly jumped out of her throat. She had been told by the village chief's wife that if she got caught, she would suffer a fate worse than death, and her class status would be classified as a bad element, meaning she would never have a good life again.

The footsteps behind her grew closer, and she could almost hear her own heart pounding with anxiety.

I was about to be trapped here.

A slender figure nimbly appeared behind a low wall, anxiously calling out to Fan Xiaofan, "Fairy Sister, here..."

There was a dog hole hidden in the corner where firewood was piled up. Fan Xiaofan recognized the child's voice and, without saying a word, hurriedly followed him out.

Using his small frame, Fu Weidong lay on his stomach inside the cave and laboriously moved the firewood back.

The night was too dark, and those who had caught up from behind didn't find anyone, so they dispersed.

The two exchanged a glance in the hazy night, smiled at each other. Fan Xiaofan's smile was one of relief after surviving a disaster, while Fu Weidong's face was full of surprise as he showed his teeth.

He never expected that he would see the fairy sister again so soon...

After Fan Xiaofan breathed a sigh of relief, he noticed this place. There were signs that someone had slept there behind the corner of the wall, and there was a broken bowl next to it.

Fu Weidong, being a small child, was fine, but when she squeezed in, the place became very cramped.

This place, which may have been where the family kept their dogs, has been abandoned.

She unconsciously frowned, and Fu Weidong noticed her gaze and lowered his head without thinking.

I hope the fairy sister won't mind where he lives...

As he leaned against the wall to sleep that night, he heard a noise outside. Peeking out through the gap in the firewood by the dog hole, his eyes sharpened, and he immediately recognized Fan Xiaofan.
