Chapter 8: Chicken and Potato Stew is Delicious

He Hongmei, who was watching over He Lvyi, was very surprised. "What are you doing, kid? Why are you in such a hurry? Are you a thief?"

He Ming, who had already run far away, did not care about his elder sister's doubts. He did not have time to answer them now. He only hurriedly heard from a distance, "You will know when I come back!"

He Hongmei looked at the impetuous boy and could no longer care about anything else. "Forget it, my sister is still better. Look, she is so well-behaved and quiet."

He Luyi: That was when I didn’t see Ye!

He Hongmei is 10 years old this year. She is busy with her studies on weekdays. As for household chores, she mainly helps with the housework. In fact, she just helps out. There is really no need for her to help with the work in the fields.

As for He Luyi, she usually hangs out with Old He and He Feng, and has very little contact with her elder sister He Hongmei.

He Ming has looked after his children more often than I have today.

He Hongmei didn't care about him anymore and just focused on making sure He Luyi didn't fall. After all, although she didn't spend much time with her sister, she could still learn a thing or two from the casual conversations at home.

"I heard that you are a little naughty boy? Your father and grandfather are worried about you so much." He Hongmei said to He Luyi.

He Luyi has an innocent face. What is she saying? I don’t understand.

Hongmei made a shy gesture, and He Lyuyi happened to grab her index finger with one claw, pinching it and having a lot of fun.

Soon, He Ming brought the pheasant back, but he was at a loss as to what to do with it.

After all, I had never cooked before. At most, I just lit the fire. All the cooking was done by the adults.

"Sister, can you do it?" He Ming poked Hongmei, as if he vaguely remembered his cousin watching grandma kill a chicken.

"This... I... should... be able to do it, right?" Hongmei was not sure either. She could watch it, but she had not tried it with her hands yet.

"How about we give it a try?" He Ming was eager to try and a little excited because it was his first time.

"Okay! Let's give it a try." Hongmei is not a hesitant person. Once she makes a decision, she will do it.

"Well, what should we do first?" He Ming scratched his head and asked his cousin.

"I remember that grandma first killed the chicken, boiled a pot of water, and scalded the chicken. When the chicken was relatively soft, she began to remove the feathers. After plucking all the feathers, she lit a pile of straw and started to smoke and roast the chicken, burning the entire surface of the chicken... and then... and then... I can't remember it anymore." Hongmei spent a long time recalling how Grandma He did it. It looked simple, but there were actually quite a few steps.

"How about this, I'll go to the stove to boil water, sister, can you see where there's a big basin to put the pheasant in? But, does it need to be bled?" Once again, I encountered uncertainty.

"Well, this pheasant is already dead, so... we shouldn't need to bleed it!" Hongmei wasn't sure either, so she just didn't care and decided not to bleed it.

"Okay then. I'll go boil some water. Let's divide the work. After the water is boiled, we'll pluck the feathers together." After saying that, he turned and walked towards the kitchen.

The He family's house is a typical blue brick and tile house. It is said that when the old He head divided the family, he got a batch of blue bricks from somewhere and built the current bungalow.

The layout of the house is very simple, with a long main hall and two rooms on each side. On the left side next to the main door is the room of He Laoer and his wife He Fengfu, and on the right side is the room of He Fenghui and his wife He Laosan.

To put it simply, they are the rooms of He Luyi's parents and second uncle, one on the left and one on the right.

Behind the room of He Fenghui and his wife is the house of old Hetou and his wife. Connected to it is a large warehouse, which can also be said to be a utility room, where all kinds of tools are placed: flat bars, backpacks, baskets, hoes... In short, everything a farmer should have.

It also contains a granary, which is a place specifically used to store grain. It is closed tightly to prevent rats from stealing food.

The back of He Laoer's house is also a storage room, where rice jars and other things are placed. Eggs laid by chickens, ducks and geese are also kept in this room. It is also connected to a room, which is a place specifically for keeping chickens and ducks.

During the day, chickens, ducks and geese are allowed to move freely in the fields, catching insects to eat by themselves, and occasionally fed with duck and chicken feed mixed with sweet potatoes and bran; at night, this is their home.

There is a room behind the main hall, which is the kitchen. There is a long stove on both sides, which are connected and can be used to burn fire. One side is used for cooking, and the other side is used to cook pig food, without any delay.

On either side of the house were pig pens, each housing two pigs. Farmers relied on their pigs for meat year-round, usually slaughtering one at the end of the year and selling the others for cash.

Even so, all year round, the hard work can't earn much money. It can only be said that farmers are self-sufficient and the food they eat is grown and raised by themselves.

He Ming walked into the kitchen, scooped a few ladles of water into the pot, and then took off the lid. The lid was made of pure iron and was too heavy for an 8-year-old child to lift.

There was a lot of firewood piled up next to the stove. He Ming often got angry, and practice made him very skilled at it.

Pick up a box of matches, rub it, sparks will ignite, grab a handful of straw, add some firewood, and a big fire will burn.

The fire is quite big, and if you don't cover the pot, it will take longer to boil the water.

In the main room, Hongmei was nowhere to be seen. She must have gone to find a big basin to scald the chicken.

He Luyi sat back in the bamboo chair again, quietly watching her brothers and sisters busying themselves. She was bored and gradually became sleepy. She was too excited and fell asleep.

When Hongmei found a suitable large basin, she grunted and dragged it out and placed it under the eaves. She saw He Luyi sleeping soundly, picked her up gently, put her on the bed, and whispered, "Sleep well, there will be delicious food tonight."

After waiting for He Ming to boil the water, the two half-grown children started to get busy. It took a while to pluck the hair. After two people worked for half a day, they finally finished this step.
