Chapter 10 Electrical Repair Shop

Xu Shuai thought to himself, "If it can't be repaired, we'll just have to replace the part. That would be such a huge loss for the factory."

Regardless of the magnitude of the loss, it had nothing to do with Xing Baohua. His current focus was on developing a high-fidelity audio system.

Seeing the tubes in those old-fashioned radios today gave me this idea.

He had previously commissioned a custom-made tube amplifier and used Burmester speakers. Although they weren't made by him, he knew their specifications inside and out.

The tubes and circuit boards can be salvaged from those old parts. The difficulty lies in finding replacement amplifier chips. They're practically nonexistent these days, and even if you do find them, they're incredibly expensive.

Either find a replacement, or find an embedded chip and rewrite the code yourself.

Most of these are counterfeit products with embedded chips, so they're easy to find and inexpensive. The only drawback is that the code cannot be modified.

This was no problem for Xing Baohua. This guy was into counterfeiting; he'd modified everything. It was just a matter of cracking a chip, right? Rewriting the code was easy too! The encoder that came with the computer in the factory could write code into the chip.

"Xu Shuai, do you know anyone who has a color TV?" Xing Baohua asked Xu Shuai, who was disassembling a refrigerator.

"I know, what's up?" Xu Shuai said, tilting his head back as he squatted down to remove the screws from the back cover.

"Don't fix that thing yet, take me there," Xing Baohua said.

"What's wrong?"

"What do you mean, 'what happened'? You only know what happened. Let's go." After saying that, Xing Baohua put on his work clothes, picked up his tool bag, and asked Xu Shuai to take him away on his bicycle.

The machinery factory residential area isn't particularly big, but it's not small either. It only takes about five or six minutes to get there by bike.

The homeowner, Qian Huayu, is the head of the transportation department. He wasn't home; he was still at work. His wife, surnamed Yu, answered the door.

"Sister Yu, open the door," Xu Shuai called out after knocking on the door.

"Who is it?" After a while, an echo was heard.

When she opened the door, she saw two young men from the repair shop. Sister Yu said, "What brings you to our house?"

"I heard you have a color TV at home, so I came over to give it some maintenance," Xing Baohua said.

"What do you mean, maintenance? I just bought it three months ago, and I haven't even checked it for a few days. It's not broken!" Sister Yu panicked a little when she heard his words, wondering if she should tell her husband.

"Maintenance, not repair, is about preventing potential damage," Xing Baohua continued, trying to mislead people.

"This is a counterfeit! A genuine imported Sharp. Are you sure you can prevent it?" Sister Yu was also very worried.

"Computers in America aren't more expensive than yours! Even though it's burned out like that, Hua Zi can still fix it. Don't worry, we're just taking a look." Xu Shuai didn't know Xing Baohua's target, but the two of them often played around and knew his nature, so they cooperated in a double act.

"Alright then, take a look. Don't mess around! You all know Old Qian has a bad temper." Sister Yu said as she let him in.

When Xing Baohua took out a screwdriver, he still objected, asking, "Didn't you say you wouldn't fix it? Why are you taking it apart right away?"

"Can you see it without opening the back cover? Don't worry, I absolutely won't touch a single part. If I break anything, I'll definitely compensate you. My dad can afford to pay for it, right?" Xing Baohua assured her, finally putting Sister Yu at ease.

Holding a small flashlight, I checked the model numbers of several chips and resistors on the motherboard, and then put the back cover back on.

He said, "I checked and it's pretty good. It can last for 10 or 20 years. Be careful of moisture and voltage. The factory is using a lot of electricity recently, and the voltage is unstable, which can easily burn out the voltage regulator."

"Okay, I got it. I sewed a TV cover for it, just in case it gets damp," Sister Yu said, pointing to the TV cover on the side.

"Thank you for your help, Sister Yu. We'll be going now. Just come find us if you need anything." She said politely and then left.

On the way back, Xu Shuai asked, "What exactly are you doing here? I'm completely baffled."

"Find the chip."

"What is a chip?" Xu Shuai asked.

“It’s an accessory. I don’t know the model number, but it’s in the TV. I’m just checking the model number and writing it down so I can put out an order for the warehouse to order it,” Xing Baohua explained.

“But nobody comes to repair color TVs! How are you going to write up an order for this kind of part? The warehouse will find it easily,” Xu Shuai said worriedly.

"You're incredibly dense. You can't write anything without it. Just watch me do it." These things can't be explained in too much detail. Xu Shuai has to figure it out gradually.

It's too easy to switch things out. This is a major flaw in the design of this system.

If Xing Baohua wanted to make a fortune, there were several other ways to steal the parts from the warehouse and resell them. Unfortunately, Xing Baohua wasn't interested in such a small amount of money. It would be understandable if he used some himself, but who could blame him for not being able to buy them or having the money?

Xu Shuai, unaware of Xing Baohua's intentions, trusted him implicitly. Back home, he continued tinkering with the broken refrigerator, unable to find the problem. Xing Baohua, with a flourish, wrote out a prescription to replace the compressor. Whether it worked or not, he'd replace it first.

"Xiao Xing! When will my TV be fixed?" Xing Baohua, who was listening to music and reclining in her chair with her eyes closed, slowly opened her eyes when asked.

Upon seeing three or four people inside, he asked, "What's up?"

"I just wanted to ask when my TV would be fixed."

"Yeah! When will my refrigerator be fixed?"

"And my washing machine. It's been like this for days."

Xing Baohua yawned and said, "This isn't my fault! There aren't any parts! Didn't I give you a form to get the parts from the warehouse? How am I supposed to fix it if you don't bring the parts?"

"Don't you know that even a skilled cook can't cook without rice? You should go to the warehouse and ask the manager to expedite your deliveries! Hurry up, hurry up!" Xing Baohua waved his hand, shooing the customers out.
