Chapter 15 What are you doing here?

The issue is with the sound quality.

Such excellent equipment, but due to the problem with the playback source, the sound system is several levels lower.

The average person might not be able to tell the difference, but for a hardcore enthusiast, this flaw is low-level and despicable.

Xing Baohua had previously inspected Liu Quan's tape recorder. Although it was a single-cassette player with dual speakers, it had stereo sound quality. As long as the tapes were up to standard, with comprehensive tuning of the audio system, it could also meet HiFi standards.

Xu Shuai was listening intently, thoroughly enjoying the lecture, when he suddenly felt someone watching him. Turning his head, he saw Xing Baohua's dark face. He instinctively asked, "W-what's wrong? Why are you looking at me?"

Where did you buy the cassette tape?

"At the factory middle school gate! Do you know how much it costs? Three yuan," Xu Shuai said happily, holding up three fingers.

Xing Baohua knew some things were unavoidable, especially given the Chinese people's penchant for bargains. A genuine cassette tape cost five yuan at Xinhua Bookstore. For people earning only thirty or forty yuan a month, that was indeed a high price.

For piracy of cassette tapes, the cost is low; a dual-cassette recorder is all you need, and you can record seven or eight cassette tapes a day.

Record while playing, since nobody cares anyway. Once it's done, sell it to places with lots of people, and you can make five or six cents per disc.

You expect good sound quality from buying cassettes from these people? A good cassette is one where you can hear sound at all.

“Remember, we’re testing, testing the world’s best audio system. Not testing speakers, as long as they produce sound. If we can get these things working, do you know how much we could sell them for?” Xing Baohua said, sounding somewhat defeated.

Today's test can be considered both a success and a failure.

He successfully built this HiFi playback system, but the failure was due to human error. The system's value lies in its ability to improve ordinary sound quality several times over.

Listening is about enjoyment, about feeling. Isn't the point of spending money to buy enjoyment and feelings?

"How much can this thing sell for?!" Xu Shuai hadn't even realized what he'd done wrong when he heard that this thing could be sold for money, so he immediately perked up and hurriedly asked.

"Don't ask how much it costs yet, there's still plenty of time. Right now, find an authentic DVD. If you can't find one, ask if it was bought at Xinhua Bookstore." Xing Baohua saw that there was still plenty of time, so he immediately instructed Xu Shuai to do this.

He then said to Liu Quan, "Go find some vinyl records for a record player. Gramophones will also be fine, but the record should ideally be one that hasn't been played more than a few times."

Liu Quan nodded and said, "I actually know where they are. Our factory used to have a song and dance troupe, but it's been turned into a factory club now. I know where the warehouse is; there are quite a few inside. I'll go right now."

After the two left, Xing Baohua walked to a pile of appliances that needed repair and found a record player among them.

He didn't know what was wrong with the record player, so he asked the owner what was wrong with it. The owner said it was slow when listening to music.

Xing Baohua told him to leave it there and fix his TV and radio after he finished repairing the others.

If the problem is as he described, it's probably a problem with the belt or the motor.

These are all minor issues. So, if they are minor issues, why didn't they fix them at the time instead of making people wait?

This systemic problem led to Xing Baohua's laziness. For several days, he just wanted to be a couch potato, lacking any ambition whatsoever.

This is also a matter of mindset. He's on a fixed salary, so whether he works a lot or a little, he gets the same pay. There's no supervisor to oversee him, and he's the only employee in the entire logistics company. I don't know why they rushed to set up this maintenance department.

Xing Baohua really didn't want to be a repairman; if it were research and development, he would be more enthusiastic than anyone else. But now he had no choice but to fix this old machine.

I checked and it shows that the manufacturing year is 1965, produced by Tianjin 287 Electronics Factory.

The record player is actually an upgraded version of the phonograph. The original phonograph had a crank, and its principle was the same as that of a mechanical watch, which was driven by winding.

Later, the drive unit was replaced with an electric motor, which reduced the size of the device.

In Xing Baohua's previous life, the sound quality played by the vinyl record system was the highest quality in the HiFi industry.

Most people who can afford it will own a set; vinyl records have their own unique tone and range, making them a pleasure to listen to.

Many people have heard record players playing music, and some of them are antique reproductions. It's not that the sound quality of vinyl records is bad, but rather that the medium on which they are played cannot achieve the same effect as playing vinyl records.

The medium of a vinyl record is a physical material, and noise from the rotating shaft and friction from the reading needle can affect the sound quality.

Nothing in this world is perfect. Just listen to what meets your requirements.

Xing Baohua wanted to make it look good, like creating a gimmick to sell it at a high price.

There are many knowledgeable people here, so at the very least, the price should be fair and you can't be fooled.

The system and audio equipment meet the requirements; only the media and audio source remain.

Since it's just for fun, let's experiment with a few different platforms. The world of the wealthy is beyond your imagination; we need to consider their needs.

Xing Baohua sells system audio equipment, not the devices themselves. Who knows what devices the customers have at home? Record players, tape recorders, even the latest CD players.

Speaking of CDs, they would be the best medium for this audio system. Unfortunately, the price is beyond the reach of most people. Xing Baohua also doesn't have the means to acquire one.

The initial price was six or seven hundred US dollars. And it was the first generation, with many flaws. Xing Baohua preferred to wait for a more mature CD player to be released before buying, by which time the price would have dropped to a level that ordinary people could afford.

I was very careful when disassembling this record player. The slow disassembly was mainly to remember the parts so that it would be easier to reassemble.

It contains very few electronic components; most are transformer components modified from power supplies. There are a lot of capacitors and resistors.
