We encountered many difficulties along the way. Although we solved some of them, many procedures remain unresolved. The algorithms, in particular, require considerable expertise from mathematics experts.
The company has few people with math majors. We used to hire all sorts of people, but there were very few people with math majors.
With the increasing need for algorithms in programs, the company's existing math professionals have become highly sought after.
Upon meeting Xing Baohua, he complained that if they didn't recruit math professionals soon, their heads would be turning as black as ladles.
Although it was mostly a joke, seeing the thinning hair did cause some concern.
After many tests, a 300MB video file can only be compressed to about half its original size, and even at 150MB, it's still large. Even with repeated compression, it's only about 5MB! It's unwatchable on a computer.
Add the compressed audio, and wow! This stuff is just asking for trouble if it gets out there.
To maintain some clarity and average audio quality, a 300MB file can only be compressed to around 50MB.
It's definitely not going to work any further. You can only make do with seeing faces on a fluorescent screen. If you put it on an LCD screen, the pixelation is quite severe. In some places you can see pixel blocks, just a square of colored blocks.
Then compress them onto a CD, and one CD can store seven or eight movies.
This is already the limit. Why compress the discs like this? Just use one disc per movie to restore the clarity.
Why bother with a compressed version?
Actually, there are two meanings. Xing Baohua wanted to test whether the compressed file could fit on the computer's hard drive and whether it could play normally after being placed there.
Furthermore, the hard drive being stored here does not refer to the hard drive of a personal user's computer, but rather to the hard drive array cabinet in his server.
These days, hard drive enclosures are charged by the gigabyte (GB). The real goal is to save a lot of space, pack more movies, and allow users to watch the movies they want online and experience online multimedia functions, thus recouping the copyright fees paid earlier.
That's why the idea of compression algorithms and creating a media player came about.
Especially with the media player, every time we test it out, we find a ton of bugs. I have no idea where all those bugs come from.
Xing Baohua stared at a programmer looking for bugs, but the programmer couldn't solve them by the time he left work. Xing Baohua was also baffled and even suspected that the programmer looking for bugs was starting to slack off.
He patted the programmer on the shoulder and left work without saying a word.
There are two possible interpretations, depending on how the programmer sees it: one is to "be careful," and the other is to "keep up the good work."
Ultimately, it all means the same thing: get the work done quickly.
It all depends on the programmer's comprehension ability.
After a night's rest, Xing Baohua arrived at the company the next day. Shortly after, Zhong Bin's secretary called Xing Baohua again to confirm the approximate time and told him that they would arrive around 10:30.
This is a reminder to Xing Baohua: prepare what needs to be prepared, and welcome what needs to be welcomed.
What's there to prepare? A few friends are coming, not for an inspection. Do we have to hang a banner at the door saying "Welcome so-and-so to visit and give guidance"?
Besides, Xing Baohua felt the company's hygiene was quite good; there was no need to make the whole company a chaotic mess for a few people. He simply didn't care about formalities.
They arrived around 10:30, and after only a few words, they had to rush to the cafeteria. This isn't a business meeting! They must have heard the cafeteria food is good!
Then call the cafeteria and order a standard meal: four dishes and a soup.
Bring two more bottles of Wuhe Special Qu, just two bottles. It's not that I don't care about the alcohol, but I don't want it to interfere with my work this afternoon.
Around 11:00 AM, Zhong Bin arrived with several of his friends.
Arriving at this time basically confirms that they're heading to the cafeteria.
Pretending to be polite, Zhong Bin invited the other person to sit down and then began to introduce a middle-aged man of similar age to him, in his thirties or forties, who was not tall but looked very energetic.
"This is Wang Wenshuo, the director of the Electronics Industry Bureau of Jinan, the provincial capital. He used to work in the Fourth Ministry of Machine Building and was just assigned to our provincial capital," Zhong Bin introduced.
Xing Baohua quickly reached out to shake hands with the other person and said, "I didn't know the leader was coming. I'm so sorry for not welcoming you sooner."
Director Wang shook Xing Baohua's hand and said, "I've often heard Director Xu mention you. Before he came down, he said that if you have any difficulties, just come to Xiao Xing."
"Not at all, not at all!" She greeted him with a smile, but in her heart she was thinking that this guy wasn't all that great. If he were on good terms with Xu Si, he would have called long ago. Why would he need to be introduced by Zhong Bin?
They're not even on the same line!
Fortunately, the other party was not a department head; otherwise, they would have been under their jurisdiction, definitely a superior.
The provincial capital is only half a level higher than the central Shandong province; that's a matter within their system and they don't have jurisdiction over the rice mills in the central Shandong province.
If there is anything that needs assistance, you can only contact the relevant departments or leaders in charge in central Shandong for coordination or assistance.
As for the other one, Director Wang didn't ask Zhong Bin to introduce him, but said, "This person is in the same industry as your rice company, he is Comrade Xu Hanwen, the business manager of the provincial computer company."
Xing Baohua simply shook hands lightly with the other person, nodded, and said, "Hello."
That's how it was handled. Actually, I only said that because of the other two people.
He asked the three of them to sit down first, then personally poured them water and offered them cigarettes.
Before she could even begin speaking, Xing Baohua took out her phone and called the cafeteria, saying, "My guest has arrived, please prepare the food!"
Zhong Bin smiled awkwardly, and Director Wang didn't know what to say.
The atmosphere was indeed a bit awkward. As long as I wasn't embarrassed, it was others who would feel awkward.
Those who knew him would think he came to see Xing Baohua because he had something to discuss, but those who didn't would have thought he was there for their rice canteen.
