Chapter 5: The Two-Word Inspection

The third brother was having a blast, and orders kept coming in.

"Alright, stop standing there. Write a serious self-criticism, and I'll go with you to the factory manager tomorrow to apologize. Hopefully, they won't cancel your pre-selected spot," said Mr. Xing.

Xing Baohua wouldn't write the inspection report; his ambition wasn't to be a worker.

When I lie in bed at night and can't fall asleep, my mind is filled with thoughts of how to make my first fortune.

Of course, many people couldn't sleep that night. Xing Baohua's computer repair business became a topic of conversation among the factory workers, both before and after meals.

Keyboard, mouse. Who was the first to include a mouse? That's right, it was Apple. At that time, the Apple II was selling like hotcakes, but the mouse wasn't standard equipment; it was the Apple Lisa 1. That is, in 1985, Steve Jobs was ousted from the computer company he founded.

Maybe if we design a computer for him, he might be able to stay at Apple.

Forget it, these kinds of people can't be destroyed anywhere. Only God can deal with them.

Let's stick with IBM. That keyboard alone weighs four or five pounds. Think of all the materials it takes! Replacing mechanical keyboards with membrane keyboards is the trend. As long as the electronic components keep up, nothing is impossible. Although we don't have these things domestically, IBM does. Even if we don't have them, we can create them; they just need to do the design.

Another problem arises: how to contact IBM? By letter, telegram, or in person? Thinking of making a trip? That's absurd. Forget about the cost, even getting a visa is difficult, unless they issue an invitation letter.

Keyboard and mouse interfaces must be standardized; this is essential. Otherwise, if the IBM 286 adopts a standard interface, all computer manufacturers will follow IBM's lead. Once industry standards are established, it's time to collect patents.

The only problem is that he activated his power a little too early; who could possibly beat that?

In short, you should get in early if you want to. Or maybe you should follow Steve Jobs' example and set up a garage for research and production? Many tech giants have experience with garage factories; is it a tradition? Or is it just a lack of funds?

Money! Thinking about this gave Xing Baohua a headache. He only had three yuan and seventy-four cents in his pocket. What could he do with that? Where could he get some funding? Should he try to fool a few electronics factories first?

That night, Xing Baohua tossed and turned, unable to sleep. He thought of many plans and solutions, but he kept running into problems with funding and where to find the materials. Only the design blueprints in his mind could help him monetize them, and the best place to do so was the United States. He needed some plans from Japan, but those guys were incredibly shrewd and not easily fooled.

As the night passed, the birds chirped in the morning.

Xing Baohua, who got up early, looked quite energetic, not like someone who hadn't slept well all night. He himself felt that it was good to be young.

"Bring your medical records with you. When you arrive at work, come with me to the factory manager's office first," Xing's father said during breakfast.

"Can I skip writing a self-criticism? I'll just apologize," Xing Baohua said.

"A self-criticism is your way of acknowledging your mistakes. If your attitude isn't right, what good is an apology? You must write a self-criticism, and it must be profound. Go and write it right now!" Xing's father roared.

"You should finish eating first before you go," Xing's mother advised.

"We're almost out of food, what's there to worry about? We'll go hungry this time," Mr. Xing said, glaring at Mrs. Xing.

Forced into a corner, Xing Baohua returned to his room to write a self-criticism. He took out a piece of paper and wrote just two words: "self-criticism".

He dawdled until it was almost time for work before finally coming out of his room. His father was already dressed in his work clothes and carrying a synthetic leather bag issued by the factory.

The two of them rode a bicycle together, and along the way, Xing's father kept lecturing Xing Baohua on how to admit his mistakes and how to make promises. They also greeted some of the other workers along the way. From afar, they could hear the "Athletes' March."

The engineer from the provincial computer company arrived late last night and is staying at the factory's guesthouse. When I called the provincial government yesterday to report the problem, they were already planning to send someone over. Even though it's only a little over 100 kilometers from the provincial capital to central Shandong, it takes three to four hours by train. So they arranged for someone to come on a business trip that very night, not only to repair the computer but also to promote their company's self-developed disk and other software.

The engineer from the provincial capital was surnamed Zhang and named Zhang Xuebao. He wore thick-rimmed glasses. His first impression was that he was a very knowledgeable person.

"It's fixed. Didn't you say it was smoking yesterday? Who fixed it?" Zhang Xuebao went to the factory office, took out his letter of introduction, and asked about the computer. Only after asking did he learn that the computer had been repaired.

"Well, Comrade Zhang, I'm not entirely clear on the specifics either. I'll accompany you to the data department to ask; the computers are under their jurisdiction," said Lao Liu, the deputy director of the office, with a smile.
