"A team of six hundred people, plus training my employees. You can name your price," Xing Baohua said, conceding.
“Xing, you know this is impossible. We can’t explain it to those people,” Davis said, spreading his hands.
"Name your price, how much do you want?"
"There are no prices, only requirements."
Xing Baohua was furious. He slammed his fist on the table and shouted angrily, "To hell with your demands! Davis, are you Philips sure you want to lose my friendship?"
“To be honest, Philips doesn’t want to lose you as a fantastic partner, and we wouldn’t do this if there were any other way,” Davis continued to explain.
Xing Baohua smiled slightly and said, "Okay, to be honest, I also have our domestic lithography technology, which was reported before. I don't know if you noticed. Their price is one-tenth of Philips'."
"We've already noticed that, so why don't you adopt it? Why do you still need Philips' technology? It shows that the technology is immature. You often exaggerate your claims, but in reality, the yield rate of your chips has always been low, right?"
"Yes. I admit it, that's why I acquired Nissan."
“R himself won’t give you the technology; it’s useless even if you steal it. I’d bet you ten thousand dollars.”
Xing Baohua continued with a cold laugh: "Your bet is worthless, and I won't even consider it. Do you know that losing my friendship means you'll lose hundreds of millions of dollars every year? I'll also retaliate in a targeted manner, just like I retaliated against Sony."
Davis made an indifferent gesture.
At this point, things are at a stalemate, and a way out is needed—a way out that both sides need.
Making trouble when signing contracts is a common tactic used by foreigners; they force you to sign a humiliating agreement at a crucial moment.
Many times, we can only swallow our anger and endure it for the time being.
Xing Baohua couldn't take it anymore. Knowing that the negotiations were going nowhere, he stood up and said to Davis, "I'll give you one day to consider. If you do as I ask, we can still be friends. If you still don't agree, Philips will withdraw from the Shanghai wafer fab project."
After uttering those harsh words, Xing Baohua turned and left.
Davis shrugged indifferently.
Xing Baohua came out of the private meeting room and went to Motorcycle Henry's place.
The two are old friends who have worked together for many years and have a very close relationship.
"Henry, I want to know about Motorcycle's plans. Don't mess with me like Philips did." This was the first thing Xing Baohua asked Henry after they met.
"Something like that. Suddenly, a lot of 286s have appeared on the market, and they often malfunction. Intel suspects that you copied them using six Philips machines, but they have no evidence. So Philips is under a lot of pressure." Henry explained, walking over to the wine cabinet and pouring Xing Baohua a glass of red wine designated for Shanghai, Maozi Red Wine.
Xing Baohua, holding a wine glass and swirling it in his hand, said, "The machines in the rice factory haven't been replicated; they're only producing low-end embedded chips now. Some are Samsung memory chips. They can request an investigation at any time, and we can cooperate with the investigation."
"Motorway is not as good as IBM in the field of lithography technology, but if you want the equipment, I would be happy to help you make it happen, but the personnel arrangements and manufacturing supervision need to be strictly monitored."
"I can allow your people to help me, but controlling my factory is out of the question. I can't possibly want to produce a chip and need your approval," Xing Baohua said angrily, shaking his head.
"Without our oversight, who knows what kind of chips you want to make? What if they're used for something? This would cause us unease and potential threats."
Upon hearing this, Xing Baohua chuckled. Henry felt a little awkward at Xing Baohua's sudden laughter.
I don't know why Xing Baohua was laughing.
"I underestimated you. I've realized how simple things are! Let me tell you, the Shanghai wafer fab will continue to be built. It will be based on Philips' six second-generation lithography machines, and will be supplemented by lithography machines independently developed in my country. Remember, Motorola will become China's most competitive rival in the communications industry."
“Xing, these threats won’t work. The Motorcycle board won’t care about these things,” Henry said.
Indeed, Xing Baohua doesn't have the strength to challenge them yet. Even if he makes a lot of noise, they'll just turn their heads and glance at him before ignoring him.
Xing Baohua walked out of Henry's room. He didn't expect that these foreign devils would give him a blow at the crucial moment.
Do we still need to go to IBM?
Of course, Xing Baohua doesn't want to fall out with IBM yet. If they use the technology they already have to block him, he really has no way to back down.
Knock on the door of Madol Booker, IBM's chief technology officer.
The two sides shook hands amicably. After entering the room, they saw several IBM members inside, presumably having a small meeting or something.
Madol Booker didn't introduce Xing Baohua to the several employees who were accompanying him in the room, and told them to leave first.
When only the two of them remained in the room, they happily reminisced about their past collaborations.
Xing Baohua said, "Madol Booker, I hope our cooperation can continue. I also know that when I ask you for lithography equipment, you have a bunch of conditions waiting for me, which will definitely make me uncomfortable."
Madol Booker nodded without speaking, and Xing Baohua continued, "So, I won't mention it this time either. I hope IBM can support us technically."
"What kind of support do you need? IBM's mission is to solve technical problems for its customers. Just tell us, and we'll find a way to solve it. Price is negotiable."
"Philips and Motorola may be exiting the wafer fab market, and I hope IBM can give me a completely new technical support."
