Captain Han's men and the criminal investigation team were conducting door-to-door interviews and investigations, and finally identified room 502 on the fifth floor of unit three.
When Xing Baohua was about to go up, Captain Han stopped him and said, "Wait until the technicians have finished their survey before going up. It's not too late to take a look."
Then they called the landlord over to give a statement. Xing Baohua was not far away, and while chatting with Captain Han, he overheard what the landlord was saying.
"There were just two young people, a man and a woman, who said they came back from something like Pseudo-Russia. I didn't know what country they were from at the time, so I assumed they were overseas Chinese and didn't take them seriously. I did ask them what they were doing back in China, and they said they were here to investigate some projects. The rent was two hundred dollars! They paid for six months at once, and they gave it to them in US dollars."
"Do you remember what they looked like?" the police officer asked.
"I remember it so clearly. The man was tall and thin, wearing glasses and a very formal suit, the kind that looks like it came from abroad. The woman was a little chubby, but not very fat. She had a round face, like an apple, which left a very deep impression on me. I've never seen such a round face before."
While asking around, they found an artist and began to paint portraits of the couple.
“The passport might be fake, and they may not have entered directly from Cyprus. Last night I looked at the entry information for the past six months, and there are very few people coming from Cyprus; they are mostly entering on official visas,” Captain Han said.
"You mean smuggling?" Xing Baohua asked.
Captain Han shook his head and explained, "In the first few years, it was a rare sight to see a foreigner. The Foreign Affairs Bureau would handle the negotiations, and even if they wanted to do something, someone would accompany them—either a translator or a liaison. In recent years, things have loosened up, and more people are coming in, especially more people of Chinese descent returning. We don't have enough manpower to keep up. I suspect they didn't enter through Shanghai, but most likely through Nanjing or Shenzhen, following your employees all the way here." Captain Han continued his analysis.
"So you've been following them for months, why haven't you made a move yet? Instead, you only acted after they received my call?" Xing Baohua was also puzzled. It had been more than three months. Weren't they afraid of being exposed after following them for so long? Finishing the job early and running away early should be a normal tactic for enemy agents.
"What are you investigating? Have you done anything major lately?"
"There really is. Remember that aircraft project we did at the Nandu Cave Base? Our team was in charge of the electronics. They did a few tests, one on offense and one on defense. Later it was one running and one chasing. That kid Xiaotian went to investigate a few GPS satellites. I had him crack them while I was at it, to help him out with GPS."
Later, the Americans went on a vicious campaign against Russia, and those damned Russians were really ruthless. They managed to knock down an Iridium satellite that was on the verge of becoming obsolete. This made the Americans behave themselves and dare not cause Russia any more trouble.
"Wow, no wonder there was so much commotion in the Far East! Turns out it was you guys who were up to something. Our people couldn't find anything out no matter how they investigated. If I were the CIA, I'd have killed those two too. Now there are only two possibilities: the KGB or the CIA. Maybe one of them realized they'd been tricked by you, so they resorted to dirty tricks."
"Shouldn't the news have leaked?" Xing Baohua said in a low voice, though he wasn't really confident.
"Have you reported this?"
"It was reported. We explained it to the staff at the time. Such a big matter couldn't possibly go unreported!"
"Okay, I got it. Don't tell anyone about this yet. Don't go out recently. If there's a sniper on a high vantage point, you might get your head blown off."
These words startled Xing Baohua, who shrank back and looked around.
Then Captain Han patted him on the shoulder and went upstairs with a smile, while Xing Baohua quickly ran back to his bulletproof car and hurried back to the villa.
Arresting people is a job for professionals. Xing Baohua was just trying to understand the situation so he could mobilize people in time to protect his treasures.
Now I understand a little better: Xiao Tian and his wife were targeting them, while others might be safe. So, wouldn't he, as the main person in charge, be in even greater danger?
Back at the villa, Suya was already home. After a warm hug, Suya showed him some things she had brought back from the capital.
The snacks, the utensils, even included a pair of old BJ cloth shoes, which he said were very comfortable to wear as slippers.
Wow, I suddenly feel like a middle-aged or elderly person.
Xing Baohua briefly explained the current situation to her, saying that it was still a bit dangerous outside, so she should try to go out less and bring more people with her when she did go out.
Looking for sightseeing or just strolling around Shanghai is out of the question.
Xing Baohua was also busy, listening to reports on the progress of various wafer fabs.
The phone kept ringing, with Director Li reporting on key defenses and such. The pressure was a bit high, but we could handle it.
With the addition of personnel sent down from higher authorities, key researchers have been protected. Xing Baohua then mentioned that he has a laboratory in Guoli Town and requested that it be completed as soon as possible. He explained that he was in Shanghai on business and couldn't return immediately, so he asked Factory Director Li to go and check on it, and then help with the acceptance inspection after completion.
Speaking of laboratories, Xing Baohua thought of the underground laboratory reserved by the wafer fab. He wondered if it was completed yet, and he would go and check on it whenever he thought of it, and urge the construction progress.
He called Xie Yingying and informed the construction site. He told Su Ya to wait for him at home, but Su Ya said they hadn't been together for a long time and wanted to spend some quality time together.
Well, I had no choice but to take her with me to the construction site.
Safety helmets are required to enter the construction site. The guards changed the color of the GK80 helmets to red, so they look like safety helmets from a distance, although the style is a bit clumsy.
Xing Baohua took it and turned to look at the guard. He thought, "How thoughtful."
It's heavy, makes your head feel heavy, and is a bit uncomfortable. Oh well, it adds a little safety and makes you feel better. Anyone with a basic understanding knows that helmets basically can't stop a sniper rifle; if they do, it's pure luck.
