Chapter 9 Return to the Village
When Ye Qian received her bicycle, the salesperson tied a large red flower to the handlebars. After helping her tie the bag of items to the back seat, Ye Qian pushed the bicycle out of the supply and marketing cooperative. She actually wanted to buy a watch, but watches need a watch winder. Imported watches don't need a winder, but they don't have one here. She'd have to wait until next time.
Ye Qian found a deserted spot, stored her belongings in her space, and headed straight to the station. She arrived just in time again, and this time, there were no seats available. The conductor offered me a small stool and asked me to sit in the aisle. The bus reeked of gasoline and was wobbly, causing two people to vomit. Luckily, someone got off at an intermediate stop and offered their seat, allowing Ye Qian to move. Otherwise, she wouldn't have been able to sit in the aisle; it was too disgusting.
By the time the car reached the county town, it was past 6 p.m. It gets dark early in November, and the roads outside are barely visible. She didn't want to walk at night, and with nowhere to stay, she retreated to her space again. She washed up and went to sleep, complaining before bed that riding in a car these days was too much of a pain.
A dreamless night.
…
Ye Qian woke up this morning from hunger. She had slept from a little before 7:00 last night until a little after 11:00 this morning. The food at the county's state-owned restaurant wasn't very good, so she took out some braised pork from the city, added a little rice, and ate a simple meal. After leaving the space, she headed towards the village.
It was a bit cold and windy in November. After walking for a while, Ye Qian couldn't stand it anymore. How long would it take to walk so slowly? She took out her bike and started riding. Although it was even colder, it was faster.
Arriving near the village, Ye Qian put her bicycle into the space, carried her small backpack and went home. On the way, she met an old lady from the village and asked her, "Why haven't you seen me these past two days? The door is closed."
Ye Qian had some impression of this grandmother. She would sometimes give her some steamed bread with wild vegetables. Although it was not tasty, food was still food and was very precious.
But because the people living next door to this grandmother were the Ye family relatives who had avoided the original owner. Ye Qian replied, "Visiting relatives." The Ye family relatives heard it and retorted, "Tsk, where are your relatives?" Ye Qian also retorted, "What do you care?" The Ye family relatives did not expect her to refute and were a little stunned for a moment.
Ye Qian kept walking while she was talking, and soon she was home. She ignored the Ye family relatives who had come to their senses and were cursing at her.
After arriving home, Ye Qian put down her small backpack and quickly boiled some water. She didn't have much hot water in her space, so she decided to boil it herself if she could. They didn't have a kettle at home, so they used clay pots for boiling water and cooking. But she had nothing else to do, so she sat for a while, cutting a potato while the water boiled, which she would later stir-fry and eat with the porridge in her space.
After the water boiled, it was stored in the space. The pot was small to begin with, so a small amount of water would get cold if left outside for a while. Ye Qian put some oil and chili peppers in the pot and began to stir-fry. Since there were no seasonings at home, she used all the seasonings from the space. She added salt, MSG, and pepper, and a little vinegar before removing the pot from the heat. The hot and sour potato shreds were ready.
While eating shredded potatoes and drinking porridge, I sighed, wishing I could cook some meat openly. After finishing the meal and clearing the tableware, I started to wash up and went to bed early. I have been doing physical work these days, so I will definitely get a good sleep tonight.
Sure enough, he fell asleep in a short while.
…
The next morning, I got up early and had a bowl of yam and pork rib porridge, two fried buns, and two rice cakes. I cleaned the house first, and then prepared to make clothes.
Yes, it was the new cloth Ye Qian had bought. Although Ye Qian had never done this before, it shouldn't be difficult. She first took out the old clothes and laid them on top of the new cloth. Then she took out her scissors and cut them according to the contours of the clothes. Of course, she left them a little long. There was no ruler at home, so she just cut them roughly, not too short. Of course, she cut two pieces of cloth, one in front and one in back.
Ye Qian aligned the two pieces of cloth, sewed them together, turned them over, removed the buttons from the old clothes, and sewed them on. The clothes were finished. The same thing happened with the pants. She aligned the edges of the two pieces of cloth and sewed them together, but added an elastic band at the waistband.
Um.
It seems like that.
It’s not that difficult.
I made the pants out of black cloth and the shirt out of army green cloth. I used the leftover cloth to add a pouch to the shirt to hold small items. The shirt is the perfect length, and the cuffs and hems don't show, so I don't have to worry about others noticing when I put on more clothes.
The black and army green cloth that Ye Qian bought could be used to make two sets of clothes. She also liked the dark red plaid material, but the shameless Ye Qian didn't want to waste the cloth, so she decided to keep it for now.
Ye Qian's trip to the city wasn't just to sell grain; she'd also gained something else. She'd heard the grain mill was hiring, and the opening was a week away, with positions available for all kinds of positions. Frontline workers didn't require a degree, but she didn't want to be one. Office jobs required a high school degree or higher, which she couldn't meet. But Ye Qian still wanted to try, fearing she'd miss this opportunity. She didn't know when she'd have the next one. Wasn't there an exam? What if someone appreciated her talent?
Ye Qian had been busy at home for the past few days. Her space was running low on hot water, so she needed to stock up. She spent half a day fetching water and half a day boiling it, gathering firewood in between. She then cooked rice porridge and rice and stored them in her space, just in case. After finishing all this, she thought about the delicious sweet porridge with red dates and walnuts she had last time, and cooked two more pots.
The takeout food in my space has almost been eaten. While there is still some time, it is best to make something to replenish it. This way, when it is inconvenient to cook, it doesn’t matter. The food in the space can be eaten at any time.
You know what, I feel a lot stronger after moving around these past few days. I don't get out of breath after just a little movement like before. I've been so busy these past few days that time seems to have flown by so quickly. I'm going to the city tomorrow and I don't know what the situation is like there, so it's better to go check it out beforehand. The original owner is an introvert and doesn't usually socialize with anyone. I've been here for so long and haven't seen her get close to anyone. They just chat a few times when they run into each other, but we're not close friends. Even if I suddenly disappear for a few days, no one asks about me. It's actually quite sad. I don't feel like I exist.
Ye Qian just sighed for a while and then fell asleep, but she just sighed for a while, after all, she was her, and the original owner was the original owner.
After lunch the next day (because she couldn't get up in the morning), Ye Qian carried her small backpack, locked the door and went out.
After walking for a while, he saw that there was no one around, so he hid aside, put the backpack into the space, took out the bicycle, and rode directly towards the county town.
Ye Qian went out late and thought she would definitely ride a bike, so she put on her long-sleeved shirt and long-pants, added a pair of woolen trousers, and put on a collarless thin down jacket under her top.
