Chapter 4: Going up the mountain

The rain stopped the next day, and it was a bright sunny day. The bluestone in the yard was warmed by the sun and glowed with lush green.

When the rooster crowed for the third time, He Yan woke up. When Qingmei woke up, she found that He Yan was not in bed. She was shocked and looked for him everywhere. She was relieved when she found He Yan sitting on a stone pier in the yard in a daze.

"Why did you get up so early, girl? Are you cold because the quilt is too thin?" Qingmei asked.

"Nothing, I just can't sleep." He Yan replied.

She had no habit of being lazy. In the barracks, she could not relax at any moment. Even at night, she had to be on guard against the enemy's sudden attack, so she had to stay alert at all times. Moreover, she had to practice martial arts since she was a teenager, and she really got up at the sound of the cock-crow. Later, when she married into the Xu family, she still couldn't change her old habits, and was ridiculed behind her back. However, after she became blind, she no longer got up so early. There was no difference between day and night for her. She still woke up when the cock crowed, but she would wait until everyone in the yard was rustling and getting up before getting up.

To seem less out of place.

"Where's father?" she asked.

"The old man has gone to the training ground, and the young master has just gotten up. Girl, please change your clothes and come for dinner." Qingmei said, and then trotted to the kitchen.

There was only one maid in the house, but she had a lot of work to do, so there was always a shortage of staff.

When He Yan arrived at the living room, He Yunsheng had already sat down at the dining table and started eating.

The boy was still the same as yesterday, wearing clothes like a peddler, not very particular. When he saw He Yan, he just glanced at him and looked away, picking up the bowl to drink porridge.

The meal was simple porridge and side dishes. The He family was not well off and could not afford any fine dishes. Even so, there was a plate of snacks on the table. It did not look very delicate and had a coarse aroma. It was obvious that He Sui had prepared it specially for his daughter.

He Yan also picked up the bowl to drink the porridge. She drank it very quickly, and Qingmei and He Yunsheng were also slightly surprised. In the past, He Yan was picky and refused to eat properly. When she finished a bowl of porridge, she reluctantly took a long time to finish it. Unlike today, she was so straightforward. After finishing the porridge, she did not immediately take the snacks on the plate - this was prepared by He Sui for her. Qingmei would not eat it, and He Yunsheng would not eat it either.

He Yunsheng put the bowl on the table and stood up. He Yan looked up and asked, "Where are you going?"

He Yunsheng frowned: "What?" Just as he was about to say something impatiently, his eyes suddenly caught a glimpse of the marks on He Yan's palm, and his tone froze.

He thought that He Yan would complain to He Sui when he returned home yesterday, but who knew that everything was calm this morning. It seemed that He Yan did not try to sow discord, and He Sui did not know that He Yan was injured.

The boy's tone softened a little: "Go up the mountain to chop wood."

In He Yunsheng's mind, after hearing this, He Yan should have left without any interest, returned to her room to fiddle with her rouge and powder, and then dressed up carefully to go out for a walk. But He Yan's eyes lit up and she said excitedly, "Really? I'll come too."

Before He Yunsheng could speak, Qingmei spoke first: "Girl, what are you going to do? It has rained on the mountain, and the road is hard to walk on. There is mud everywhere. What if you fall?"

"That's right." It was rare that there was a normal person in the room, so He Yunsheng immediately said, "Don't ask for trouble."

They both thought that He Yan was just impulsive, but He Yan turned to Qingmei and said, "Father is in the martial arts field during the day and comes home at night. Qingmei, you have so much work to do and you can't always follow me, He Yunsheng." She called He Yunsheng's name, and He Yunsheng was startled when she heard it, "If you don't take me with you, I will go by myself."

"Hey!" He Yunsheng was angry.

"Is there a third person in this room who can control me?" she asked slowly.

He Yunsheng was speechless. No one in this room could control He Yan's temper, let alone the third person. It was because of He Sui's pampering that He Yan refused to listen to anyone, except Mr. Fan.

"If you want to go, then go with me." The boy said angrily, "But if you fall down on the way and cry and want to go home, I won't send you back."

He Yan shrugged.

He Yunsheng left in a rage. He couldn't understand why He Yan became more annoying after getting sick. If He Yan in the past had a pretentious temper, now He Yan had a bit of roguery, which made her even more difficult to deal with.

She is indeed He Yunsheng's enemy!

The mountain road to Longhuan Peak is rugged and the terrain is dangerous. Most of the people who come here are poor people who come to chop wood and collect herbs.

There were some unknown wild flowers growing on the roadside, dotted among the grass, which was very pretty. But after all, it was not a place for a real outing and flower viewing. The stones under my feet were stuck to the cliff, and looking down made my legs tremble.

He Yunsheng had walked this road countless times and knew that it was not easy to go up the mountain. He waited to hear He Yan complain and cry, but from beginning to end, He Yan did not say a word.

He Yunsheng couldn't help but turn around, and was surprised to find that He Yan was not far behind him, and was almost walking shoulder to shoulder with him.

How is this possible?

Even a man would have trouble walking on this road, not to mention He Yan, who was a delicate lady who used to rub her knees after walking a long distance. When did she get so strong?

"Why are you looking at me?" He Yan stared at him strangely, "Aren't you going to keep going?"

He Yunsheng turned around without saying a word and continued walking forward.

She must be pretending. She will definitely give up soon!

He Yan looked at his legs and sighed.

The strength in her legs was really weak. She and He Yunsheng felt tired after walking this distance for a long time. It looked like they still needed some time to get used to each other.

"That's enough." He Yunsheng stopped and took the axe from his waist.

There were a lot of miscellaneous trees here, and He Yunsheng chose small and lonely trees, which were easier to chop. He pointed to the stone next to him and said to He Yan, "Just sit here for a while. I need to chop for an hour."

"Is it here?" He Yan nodded and took off the cloth bag on his back.

He Yunsheng watched her take out an axe from the cloth bag.

"You...what are you doing?" He Yunsheng's mind was confused and he couldn't speak clearly.

He thought that the bag He Yan was carrying contained a water bottle, but it turned out that she was carrying an axe? She had walked such a long way with an axe on her back, and he didn't leave it behind. He Yunsheng suspected that he was dreaming.

What happened next made He Yunsheng even more certain that he was dreaming.

He saw his darling sister, He Yan, who usually felt that a teacup was too heavy, picked up the axe in front of him without hesitation, and with one stroke, chopped off a bunch of branches. Her movements were so smooth as if she had done it a thousand times.

She said, "I'll help you, quickly."
