Chapter 69: Trap

The sound of the wind whistled past my ears. I didn't know how long I had been running before the horse stopped.

Shen Hong held the horse's belly and they ran at full speed. The mountain road was bumpy and they did not dare to stop. It was not until this moment that she felt her stomach churning and she almost vomited.

I had already reached the middle of the mountain, and when I looked back, there was no sign of the wolf chasing me.

A new soldier said, "We are saved."

Shen Hong stared blankly at his waist. He had grabbed a bamboo stick when he came here, and now he gave the stick to He Yan. He thought of He Yan and his face turned pale again. He asked tremblingly, "...What about He Yan?"

He Yan only had a bamboo stick, one of his only swords was lost by Shen Hong, and the other was stuck in the throat of the wolf leader. He Yan had no weapons at all. The three wolves were coming at him with great force, how could he hide alone?

"Should we go back and take a look?" he asked courageously.

"What nonsense are you talking about?" Zheng Xuan looked at him coldly. "The wolves are still here. We finally managed to escape. Are we going back to die?"

"But He Yan is behind us. He can't do it alone." Shen Hong's eyes turned red when he thought of He Yan. He thought He Yan was a good person. They were just eating pine nuts together.

"Didn't he tell us to go down the mountain to find the coach?" The new recruit next to Zheng Xuan said, "Let's go down the mountain and tell the coach to come and rescue them, right?"

"no."

Shen Hong looked at Zheng Xuan in disbelief, but Zheng Xuan remained calm, "If we tell the coach, he will know that we have crossed the mountain."

"He just saved us. If it weren't for He Yan, we would have died long ago!" Shen Hong said loudly.

"You also know that the three of us almost died. If he faced the wolf pack alone, he would definitely die!" Zheng Xuan's voice was higher than Shen Hong's. "Crossing the hill is a violation of military orders. The lightest punishment is caning, and the worst is beheading. Do you want to let others die for a dead He Yan? Shen Hong, do you want this?"

Shen Hong was stunned by the shouting. He was timid by nature. If it weren't for the misfortune in his family, he should have been the young master of a pharmacy for his whole life, and his life would have been ordinary and peaceful. Now that he had suddenly encountered trouble, he was already flustered and confused. When he heard that someone might lose his head, he shuddered.

He still has a mother to take care of at home. If he dies, and there is no male heir in the family, how will the whole family live?

"I...I..." Shen Hong stammered, unable to speak.

“After we go down the mountain and nothing happens, wait until the sun sets and tell the instructor that He Yan ignored everyone’s advice and climbed over the top of the mountain and could not be found.” Zheng Xuan said without any emotion.

This not only blocked He Yan's last chance to survive, but also accused him of violating military orders. Shen Hong shook her head, but the other two were already worried about being punished, so they agreed. Zheng Xuan stared at Shen Hong and said, "If you want to go and file a complaint, go ahead. It's just your words, and we'll see if the coach believes you or us."

After that, he no longer cared about Shen Hong's expression and rode forward quickly. Shen Hong had no choice but to follow him as the mountain gradually darkened.

It was getting dark and there was almost no light in the jungle.

The horses lost their way on Baiyue Mountain. He Yan held the bamboo stick and looked back. He breathed a sigh of relief, finally getting rid of those wolves.

It was the first time that He Yan saw such a relentless wild wolf. He Yan curled his lips and thought of the wolf he encountered in Mo County. Mo County was still suffering from famine at that time. All the wolves within a hundred miles were caught and eaten. They were not as arrogant as those in Baiyue Mountain. Thinking of this, he felt that the slanted-eyed man named Zheng Xuan was really stupid. How could he want to catch wolf cubs and raise them? Wolves are simply animals that cannot be tamed. The only animals that can be tamed are domestic dogs that wag their tails at people, while wolves only bite people's throats.

The horse turned in a circle and moved no further.

There were forests everywhere, and they all looked the same. She had just been avoiding the wolves, and had not been able to mark the trees. She was afraid that she had already climbed over the hill and had no idea where she was. If Shen Hong and the others had not told Liang Ping in time, they would not be able to leave the forest when it got dark. Without a fire, they would have to spend the night in the mountains for fear of encountering wild animals.

She thought to herself, sighed, dismounted, and planned to look for a cave nearby that could shelter her from the wind. As soon as she got off the horse and stood up straight, she suddenly felt something was wrong.

She couldn't really explain why. If she had to, it was probably because she had fought on the battlefield for many years and had an intuition about danger. She turned her head subconsciously and felt a dark shadow passing over her head. Something scratched her neck, bringing out a trace of blood.

The horse was startled and raised its front hooves. He Yan did not pull the reins tight, and the horse rushed forward without looking back, disappearing into the depths of the jungle in the blink of an eye. She turned around and saw the black shadow that had just rushed over, lying in the grass, revealing two green eyes.

It turned out to be the wolf from before.

He Yan looked at the wolf, then at the direction it was coming from, and suddenly she understood. Among the wolves just now, there was actually a smart one, knowing that it couldn't catch up with He Yan on horseback, so it took a shortcut. Baiyue Mountain was not He Yan's territory, but the territory of the mountain beasts here. It seemed that it had been lurking for a long time, waiting for He Yan to relax her vigilance, and then it would rush up and bite her throat.

In fact, the wolf almost succeeded.

He Yan touched his neck, which was burning and covered in blood. The wolf saw that it failed to strike, so it bared its fangs and rushed over from behind He Yan.

He Yan rolled on the ground to avoid its claws, feeling a little anxious. Now that her horse was gone, she could only fight the wolf, but she only had this stick.

When Shen Hong went up the mountain, it would be fine even if she took a string of darts, she thought to herself, and she held the stick forward and threw it towards the wolf's head.

The bamboo stick hit the wolf's head, and with a "bang", it broke in the middle. The wolf's head was tilted and only a little blood flowed. It looked at He Yan, howled furiously twice, and rushed over again.

"What a broken stick!" He Yan cursed and dodged. However, the wolf was very cunning and did not attack head-on. Instead, it came from behind and tried to bite her neck. He Yan dodged several times but was bitten by it. She bent her elbow and stabbed the wolf in the belly. The wolf cried out in pain and tried its best to hold her under it.

A man and a wolf wrestled together, and the fallen leaves in the forest were rustling. He Yan twisted the wolf's head hard to prevent it from biting her. She wondered if she was going to bite the wolf with her mouth. As soon as she thought of this, she suddenly felt empty under her feet. Before she could react, she felt her body fall down and heard a "bang". The next moment, she and the wolf fell to the ground together.

The sky became round, and the branches seemed taller. Under my feet was the dirt and a wolf that had just stood up.

She and the wolf fell into the trap together.
