"Mother!"
As soon as Wen Qing opened the door, Hengheng leaned over and rushed over. Wen Qing had no choice but to take Hengheng from Wen Liang's arms. Hengheng's chubby little arms wrapped tightly around Wen Qing's neck, as if afraid that his mother would run away.
"Honey, what's wrong?" Wen Qing asked with a smile.
"Is he upset?" Wen Liang walked in carrying several bags and closed the door behind him.
At this moment, Ji Yanjun came out of the kitchen: "Liangliang is here."
"Brother-in-law," Wen Liang called out.
"Um, how did you get here?" Ji Yanjun asked.
"Take the bus."
"Have you got a meal yet?"
"without."
"We'll eat here in a bit, I'll be done soon," Ji Yanjun said.
Wen Liang agreed: "Okay."
Wen Qing was holding Hengheng, wiping away his tears and kissing him, completely smitten. She turned to him and asked, "Liangliang, why did you bring this here so late? What happened?"
Wen Liang laughed: "He ran this way on his own."
"Run this way?"
"Um."
How did it get away?
Wen Liang began to explain to Wen Qing why Hengheng had run off to Nanzhou.
Hengheng was playing happily with Xiaodao, Erpao, Lele, and others from morning until noon, spinning tops, playing marbles, throwing mud dolls, and even hitting pipes with them. After lunch, Hengheng took his usual nap, and after waking up, he continued playing. In the afternoon, Dingding's grandfather asked Dingding to go to the peanut field by the river to pick peanuts.
Picking peanuts involves using a small hoe to dig the ripe peanuts out of the soil, gathering them in bunches along with their stems to take home. They can be dried, roasted, sold, or ground into oil; they have many uses.
Hengheng had never picked peanuts before, but he was very curious. He followed a group of children to dig in the dirt and pick peanuts. The children picked peanuts and peeled and ate them, looking like little kittens.
Suddenly, Aunt Wang appeared and started yelling. It turned out that the group of naughty children had mistaken Aunt Wang's peanut field for Dingding's.
When Aunt Wang yelled, a group of children were so frightened that they ran away. Hengheng followed, but after a few steps, he ran back.
Aunt Wang asked, "Why did you come back again?"
Aunt Wang was tall and strong, with dark skin. Hengheng was a little scared and blinked his long eyelashes, saying, "Dad, my dad said that a real man should be brave and responsible for his actions."
Aunt Wang chuckled and reached out her hand, saying, "Come on, I'll take you home and tell your grandma. Let's see if she spanks you."
"Don't pull me, I can walk."
"Alright, then come with me."
So, tall and strong Aunt Wang walked ahead, with chubby Hengheng swaying behind. By the time they reached the Wen family's courtyard from the riverbank, almost everyone in Shuiwan Village knew about the incident where "Dingding mistook the peanut field for another one and accidentally dug up half of Aunt Wang's three-tenths peanut field."
A little while later, Dingding's mom brought Dingding, Erpao's mom brought Erpao, Xiaodao's mom brought Xiaodao... basically, each mom brought a child over to apologize to Aunt Wang.
Aunt Wang, Yao Shiling, and others treated it as a joke, saying that the few peanuts were no big deal, and they praised Hengheng in particular.
Yao Shiling smiled and patted Hengheng's head.
Hengheng tugged at Yao Shiling's clothes with his chubby little hands, remaining silent. Yao Shiling chatted with a few other villagers for a while before going about her business.
After Dingding, Xiaodao, Erpao, and the others were led away from the Wen family courtyard by their respective mothers, Hengheng missed Wen Qing. As he thought about it, he suddenly grabbed Yao Shiling's leg and cried, "Grandma, I want my mommy, I want my mommy!"
When Yao Shiling couldn't coax them, she called Wen Liang and Wen Peng over.
Wen Liang and Wen Peng teased Heng Heng.
Hengheng refused to play and said angrily, "I'll find my mom myself." After saying that, he went into Wenqing's room, found his little cloth bag, put his slingshot and marbles in it, and then dragged the bulging little cloth bag and walked angrily towards the yard. His chubby little appearance made Yao Shiling, Wen Liang, and Wen Peng both laugh and cry.
"Hengheng, look for your mother again tomorrow," Wen Peng said.
"don't want."
"It's almost dark," Wen Liang said.
"It's not dark yet." Hengheng said, head down, struggling with his bulging little cloth bag. He went to open the door, but the threshold was too high for him to lift. So he used his two chubby hands to lift it, sticking his bottom out and using all his strength to carry it. He then scooped the little bag out the door and ran off towards the dirt road with his short legs, shouting in his loud baby voice, "I'm going to find my mommy!"
Yao Shiling: "..."
Wen Liang: "..."
Wen Peng: "..."
The Wen family had no choice but to let Yao Shiling send Hengheng back to Nanzhou, otherwise, given Hengheng's mischievousness, no one would have peace. It just so happens that Nanzhou No. 1 Middle School starts tomorrow, and Wen Liang also needs to go back to teach.
So Wen Liang carried Hengheng back and told him that they would go to Nanzhou together in a while, and only then did he calm down.
Yao Shiling went to the field and picked some vegetables such as green beans, eggplants, peppers, and pumpkins. Aunt Wang also gave her some peanuts with the fresh scent of soil, which she asked Wen Liang to take to Nanzhou Nanyuan Community.
Wen Liang rode his bicycle, letting Hengheng sit on the front bar and hold onto the handlebars. He steadily carried him to the county town, then put the bicycle at Fengqing Garment Factory. Wen Liang carried large and small bags in one hand and held Hengheng's hand in the other before arriving at Nanzhou Nanyuan Community.
"You really make a fuss." Ji Yanjun said, looking at Hengheng.
Hengheng sat in Wen Qing's arms, burying her face in Wen Qing's chest.
Wen Qing smiled.
"Dinner's ready," Ji Yanjun said. "Liangliang, wash your hands."
"Okay." Wen Liang stood up and went into the kitchen to wash his hands.
“You go too.” Ji Yanjun looked at Hengheng.
Hengheng said decisively, "Okay." She jumped off Wen Qing's lap and ran to the bathroom to wash her hands.
Ji Yanjun bent down and picked up the vegetables from the ground.
"Yanjun, wait a minute." Wen Qing stepped forward and pulled the bag.
"What's wrong?" Ji Yanjun asked.
Wen Qing smiled and reached into the bag, saying, "I want to eat peanuts too, just like Hengheng." Wen Qing reached out and grabbed a handful, but before she could even hold the bag, Ji Yanjun grabbed her hand.
"What are you doing?" Wen Qing frowned and said, "Eating peanuts won't hurt you."
Ji Yanjun used her slender fingers to break the peanuts in her hand down to just two, then took them all away.
“Ji Yanjun!” Wen Qing was depressed. Although she had explained to Ji Yanjun many times that she would never get stomach cancer in her life, Ji Yanjun did not relax his control over her diet at all and took her to get a check-up every few days.
"Wife, wash your hands and it's time to eat." Ji Yanjun turned around with a smile.
Wen Qing rolled her eyes at him, then lowered her head to peel peanuts. Just as she opened one, Hengheng came over: "Mom, I want to eat peanuts too."
Wen Qing: "..." There are only two in total.
"Mommy, I want to eat peanuts too." Hengheng's little mouth was pouting, and he was incredibly cute. Wen Qing had a sudden idea and said, "Ask your dad for some, he has some."
"Okay." Hengheng ran to the kitchen to find Ji Yanjun: "Dad, I want to eat peanuts."
“Go ask your mother for it,” Ji Yanjun said.
"Mom said you have it."
"I don't."
Hengheng ran to the living room again: "Mom, Dad said he doesn't have any peanuts." Then he stared longingly at the peanuts in Wen Qing's hand.
“He has them, he has a lot,” Wen Qing said firmly.
Hengheng turned around and ran back to the kitchen: "Dad, Mom said you have peanuts, you have lots of peanuts."
"Where is it? I don't know?" Ji Yanjun asked back.
Hengheng's big, dark eyes scanned the kitchen, but he didn't see any peanuts. When he ran back to Wenqing, he found that Wenqing's hand was empty of peanuts. He stared at Wenqing's hand and asked, "Mom, did you finish the peanuts?"
Wen Qing nodded: "Mm."
"But Dad, there are no peanuts left."
“Mine is all gone too, what should we do?” Wen Qing asked.
"Hmm, hmm, hmm, then I, I won't eat them." After a moment of disappointment, Hengheng suddenly became optimistic, his eyes shining: "Mom, when we go to Grandma's house, we'll go to the river, and I, I'll peel so many peanuts for you." He stretched out his two chubby little hands, and in his current mind, "two hands" meant a lot: "Let's eat them together, okay, Mom?"
Looking at her chubby son in front of her, with his sweet little voice, Wen Qing's heart melted like cotton candy. She hugged him tightly and said, "Okay, let's eat together." As she spoke, she opened her other hand, revealing four peanuts in her palm.
"Oh dear, Mom, you didn't finish your peanuts!" Xiao Hengheng exclaimed in surprise.
Wen Qing laughed: "Yeah, shall we eat together?"
"Okay." Hengheng took a peanut from Wen Qing's hand with his chubby little hand, tilted his head up, and held the peanut to Wen Qing's mouth: "Mom, you eat it."
Wen Qing paused for a moment, then lowered her head and bit into a peanut.
Hengheng grinned and popped another one into his mouth, chewing it noisily: "Delicious, Mom, is it delicious?"
"Delicious." Wen Qing replied with a smile, and couldn't help but hug Hengheng tightly, staring intently at the little guy. His chubby face was fair and plump, his eyes were bright and black, and his eyelashes were just like Ji Yan's, long and thick. He was chubby and had a faint milky fragrance when held in his arms.
"Hengheng," Wen Qing called out gently.
"Mmm." Hengheng smacked her lips as she ate peanuts, then looked up at Wen Qing: "Mommy."
Wen Qing gently stroked his chubby little face: "Were you Hengheng in the life before last?" Are you that Ji Heng?
"Hengheng, it's me." Hengheng replied abruptly.
"Did you not come to find your mother in your past life because you were angry that your mother didn't take good care of you?"
Hengheng chewed on peanuts and shook his head: "No, no, Hengheng is not angry with Mom."
"Really?" Wen Qing asked, her eyes involuntarily reddening.
Hengheng was stunned for a moment, then reached out his little hand to wipe Wen Qing's tears: "Mommy, don't cry, I'm not angry, don't cry, don't cry."
As soon as Ji Yanjun and Wen Liang came out of the kitchen, they saw Wen Qing crying.
"Sister." As Wen Liang called out, Ji Yanjun strode over, took Wen Qing's hand, and asked, "Qingqing, what's wrong? Why are you crying? Hengheng, did you make Mom angry?"
"No, I didn't," Hengheng quickly waved her hand in denial.
"Then why is Mom crying?" Ji Yanjun questioned.
Hengheng said, "I didn't, I wasn't naughty, I didn't wet my pants or poop."
With a "pfft," Wen Qing burst into laughter through her tears.
“Dad, look, Mom is smiling!” Hengheng said immediately.
Wen Qing hugged Hengheng affectionately and said to Ji Yanjun, "Don't blame my son, and don't be mean to my Hengheng."
"Hmm, don't be mean to me, Hengheng." Hengheng repeated.
Ji Yanjun: "..."
