Chapter Sixty-Six: Harvesting River Clams

Lin Xiao patted Er Ya on the shoulder and comforted her, "Alright, alright, don't be afraid, Lin Jinbao is gone."

Er Ya cried for a long time. She didn't know why, but she just really wanted to cry and felt extremely sad.

After she had completely vented her emotions, Er Ya wiped away her tears and said apologetically, "Brother Lin Xiao, I'm sorry, I got your clothes wet."

Lin Xiao shook his head: "It's nothing, my clothes aren't clean anyway."

Er Ya stood up, dusted herself off, gave Lin Xiao a forced smile, and continued walking towards the reeds.

For the first time, Lin Xiao hated himself for being so awkward. Not knowing how to comfort Er Ya, he quickly walked a few steps to catch up with her and said:

"Does he often bully you like this? I've seen it several times. I need to think of a way to make him afraid to come to you again."

Er Ya helplessly spread her hands: "What can I do? I don't know what to do. I can't beat him, and if I make a scene, it will only implicate our whole family."

Although she had thought of a thousand ways to deal with Lin Jinbao, she couldn't implement any of them at the moment. The two of them were far too mismatched in strength, and his mother was no pushover either.

Lin Xiao pointed to himself: "Do whatever you want, I can help you."

Two people can keep Lin Jinbao in check, right?

Er Ya tilted her head and pondered for a while, then her eyes lit up. She had a good idea and shook Lin Xiao's arm: "Hahahaha, I've got a solution!"

She whispered something in Lin Xiao's ear, about this and that.

Upon hearing this, Lin Xiao thought it was a good idea. People like Lin Jinbao needed to be dealt with in this way.

But now is not a good time; it would be easy for them to guess that it was Er Ya who did it. Let's wait and see.

There was no way to deal with him in a short time, so Er Ya had to suppress her anger for now. If she got the chance, she would definitely teach him a lesson.

Looking at Lin Xiao, who was still following her, she asked him curiously, "Brother Lin Xiao, are you going to the river too? It's almost time for dinner, aren't you going home?"

Lin Xiao's face darkened instantly, and he hesitated, unsure of what to say.

"Did your naughty mother bully you again? Is she not letting you come home?"

Lin Xiao shook his head: "No, Mother said there isn't enough food, so it's okay to skip a meal. She told me not to eat dinner tonight, just drink more water."

As he spoke, his stomach rumbled.

Er Ya cursed a few times in anger. How could there be such a heartless person? The child is only half a child, and they make him work every day but don't give him any food. Where does he get the strength to work?

Thinking that he was much more pitiful than herself, with no one to care for or love her, Er Ya's sympathy overflowed. She forgot about being angry and tugged at Lin Xiao's sleeve, striding forward.

Unaware of what was going on, Lin Xiao seemed used to this and silently followed Er Ya. He had complete trust in the person in front of him.

They soon arrived at the reeds. Er Ya excitedly ran to the spot where she had previously collected wild eggs. She carefully parted the grass, but there wasn't a single feather inside.

What happened? Did I clean it out too thoroughly last time?

Did the pheasants stop laying eggs here? Without getting the wild eggs she had been longing for, Er Ya's mood soured again.

Sigh, have I used up all my luck points for today?

Seeing Er Ya's disappointed expression, Lin Xiao understood that she hadn't gained anything. He looked at the river in front of him and shouted to Er Ya:

"Er Ya, wait for me on the shore, I'll catch some fish for you to eat."

I've been searching in the river for ages, but I haven't even caught a single fish. I'm going to make a fool of myself today.

Suddenly, I felt something in my hand. I was delighted and pulled it out to take a look. What was it? The shell looked strangely hard. I didn't know what it was, so I just threw it on the shore and went back to catching fish.

Er Ya saw something black being thrown up and thought it was a fish, so she quickly ran over to catch it, otherwise it would jump back into the water.

Lin Xiao, who was keeping a close eye on Er Ya, shouted, "Er Ya, don't go! Those are things I threw away that I don't want anymore."

Er Ya had already run up to it, picked up the thing that had been thrown on the ground, rinsed it clean with water, and wow, such a big clam! She was going to have a good meal again.

But how could one be enough for their family? This thing looks quite big, but there's not much edible stuff inside.

He shouted at Lin Xiao, "Brother Lin Xiao, if you touch this thing again, throw it all up here. I need it."

Obediently, Lin Xiao quickly threw a bunch of them at her.

This stuff is pretty useless. It's everywhere in the river. Occasionally, kids will pick some up and take them home to feed their chickens, but it's quite a hassle. They have to crack them open one by one. They'd rather spend that time digging up some earthworms to feed the chicks. Chicks love to eat this stuff.

The river was clear and flowing gently, with fallen petals floating on its surface, making it look extremely beautiful.

This tempted Er Ya to join in catching fish. She rolled up her pants and slowly waded into the water. Some fish fry swam against the current, but Er Ya scared them away.

The fish fry dart around so fast that it's impossible to catch them in time.

As a small fish was trying to escape, a black creature suddenly darted out of the mud at the bottom of the river, swallowed the fish whole, and then darted back in and disappeared.

Er Ya's eyes shone brightly, and she spotted it immediately. Overjoyed, she recognized it at a glance, even though she was very fast. It turned out to be a turtle, which is very nutritious.

Er Ya quickly called Lin Xiao over, and the two of them slowly dug away the mud and sand.

Sensing something was wrong, the turtle tried to escape, but the quick-thinking Er Ya flipped it over, its four legs in the air. Hahaha, now it can't escape no matter how much it struggles.

Fortunately, Er Ya had brought a small basket with her when she went out, which made it easy for her to pick up the river clams that were thrown on the ground and put them in the basket.

There were too many clams, and after only a few, Er Ya couldn't fit them all in the river. Reluctantly, she threw the extra clams back into the river.

"Brother Lin Xiao, we have enough to eat, we can't fit any more. Since you're coming to my house for dinner today, let's take this back with us."

Lin Xiao slapped the river water in frustration. He had said he was going to catch fish for Er Ya, but after trying for a long time, he hadn't even caught a small fish. These fish were too clever.

Er Ya called him again, and Lin Xiao slowly walked towards the shore. He felt so useless, unable to do anything right. After working so hard for so long, he still had to go to Er Ya's house for a free meal.

Er Ya had no idea what he was thinking. She handed him the basket and happily walked home, leaving Lin Xiao to follow quickly.

"Er Ya, walk slowly, the road here is not easy to walk on, don't fall."
