Chapter 118 is not simple

Zhao Shu could not live this kind of life.

Her thoughts drifted away, but when she brought them back, Zhao Shu had completed all the preparations. All that remained was to remove the arrow. Because it was a triangular arrowhead, it was difficult to pull out. "It's a triangular arrowhead. Luckily, it didn't injure any bones or tendons, otherwise it would have been troublesome."

Upon hearing this, Zhou Hanyan burst into tears again, but she didn't cry out loud, afraid of affecting Zhao Shu. She knew about the triangular arrowhead; it had barbs and couldn't be pulled out by force, requiring the flesh to be cut open.

Zhao Shu turned to look at her, "It's better not to look." A teenage girl like her probably can't handle it.

But Zhou Hanyan shook her head and insisted on watching it to the end, even though her lips had turned white with fear.

She insisted, and Zhao Shu couldn't say anything. She took out a dagger, the best scalpel that Physician Peng could provide. Zhao Shu didn't mind and gently cut open the flesh next to the wound. Lin Dongxue woke up in pain, and Zhou Hanyan hurriedly held his head and comforted him again and again.

Mimicking Zhao Shu's gentle voice, as if hypnotizing her, Zhao Shu's eyes flashed with surprise; the little girl was clever.

With Zhou Hanyan's comforting words, Zhao Shu instructed Xiao Guozi to hold Lin Dongxue's body still and continue what he was doing.

The triangular arrowhead has three barbs, all of which are embedded in the flesh. When the dagger touches one of the barbs, she can determine the approximate location of the other two.

Fresh blood kept oozing from the wound, obscuring the condition inside the flesh, making it invisible and indistinguishable. Unless one had studied for several years and understood the meridians and blood vessels of the human body, one should not easily make the surgery.

Zhao Shu has a solid foundation in basic skills, but lacks experience. She is slow and very careful. What is a minor surgery for other experienced doctors requires her the greatest perseverance and concentration she has ever had.

By this time, she was covered in sweat, and her eyes were burning from the sweat, but she didn't blink. Wei Tingsi gently wiped her sweat, feeling heartbroken but also proud of her, finding her even more charming.

People who are earnest are the most endearing, whether they are women or men.

After cutting open the three barbs, the final step was to remove the arrow. Zhao Shu said, "Hold him down."

Zhang Chang and Wei Tingsi joined in, pinning Lin Dongxue to the ground and preventing him from moving. Zhao Shu took a deep breath, gripped the arrow shaft, and pulled it out sharply. Immediately, blood gushed out, splattering all over her face. But she couldn't let her guard down. The wound wasn't big, but it wasn't small either. She immediately began stitching it up.

Limited by the backwardness of the technology of the time, the tensile strength of catgut sutures nowadays is very weak and they are prone to infection, requiring considerable care. However, they are still much stronger than the needle and thread used for mending clothes. But there are also advantages to removing sutures. Zhao Shu felt that not having to remove them herself avoided the embarrassment again, which was quite good.

Because of the weak tensile strength, she was very careful. The wound, which wasn't very big, took a long time to stitch up, which made Lin Dongxue suffer. Fortunately, he didn't utter a sound.

After tying the knot at the last step, she breathed a sigh of relief, then applied the medicine, wrapped it in gauze, and the medicine she had just ordered was also decocted. Zhou Hanyan personally fed it to Lin Dongxue. Zhao Shu breathed a sigh of relief, wiped the sweat and blood from her face, and said to Xiao Guozi, "Young Master Lin's robes and shoes are wet. Take them off and find some clean ones for him to change into, otherwise he will get a fever."

For ordinary soldiers, it's fine, but for someone like Wei Tingsi, his personal guards would bring him two sets of emergency clothes, which weren't hard to find.

Xiao Guozi said yes, then looked at Zhang Chang, who in turn looked at Wei Tingsi. Wei Tingsi nodded, and only then did he order someone to bring over dry clothes.

Other soldiers were also wounded by arrows, and Zhao Shu needed to treat them as well. Fortunately, there were no more such embarrassing patients. With the experience from the first time, the second and third times were much easier.

Even so, she worked tirelessly for a whole day and night to completely treat the other injured people, until finally, her vision turned completely red with blood.

Previously, Wei Tingsi's subordinates only felt that their marshal had found a sweetheart who had both status and good looks. They were happy for their marshal and didn't think much of Zhao Shu. They weren't Zhou Hanyan; they wouldn't idolize her just because she had face masks and shampoo.

But now, Zhao Shu treated the injured with utmost care and gentle comfort. Her body and face were covered in blood, and she didn't even blink when sweat got into her eyes. All the wounds were treated very well, without damaging any tendons or causing any disability. She didn't complain once, and even looked at the injured with the eyes of a mother. They deeply felt that this woman was not a parasite clinging to the strong; she was a strong person herself.

Their marriage was a perfect match, based on equal social standing.

There were casualties, but the army could not stop and had to keep advancing. After Zhao Shu collapsed from exhaustion, she woke up to find herself being carried. Other wounded soldiers who could walk walked, while those who could not were also carried.

"Awake?" Wei Tingsi asked, looking down.

Xiao Guozi and Chu Chun were also overjoyed and wept, but Wei Tingsi dared not say anything out of turn.

Zhao Shu sat up and had the soldiers put the stretcher down. She stood up and asked, "Well, how are the others?"

"I'm fine." Wei Tingsi smoothed a strand of hair from the corner of her mouth. "Are you hungry?"

"I'm not hungry, I'll go check on them." She couldn't wait to know if her patients were really cured, hoping there wouldn't be any aftereffects. After all, it's a lifelong matter, and there aren't many social security benefits available now. Besides, living on social security alone doesn't provide a high quality of life.

Wei Tingsi didn't stop her and accompanied her to the back. Sure enough, they saw the remnants of the army diligently making their way at the rear. When they saw Zhao Shu, they all saluted. Zhao Shu chose one of them to ask, "How are you feeling?"

"I feel like I'm almost fully recovered and can fight again, but the marshal won't let us move around too much. Your medical skills are truly superb, much better than those quacks."
