Chapter 28 Old Stories Part Two

Zhao Shu followed Jiang Suiji to the study. The old woman and the young man went in one after the other and then closed the door.

Bi Qiao and Granny Zhuang originally wanted to go in, but Zhao Shu left them outside.

The two stood guard outside the study, their expressions different. Bi Qiao was furious. The princess was sensible and missed her maternal family. She had prepared generous gifts to visit, but this happened before she had even eaten a few pieces of pastry. The Jiang family really didn't know any manners.

When she thought about the things Zhao Shu had asked her to add on top of the original, she felt it wasn't worth it.

Granny Zhuang, on the other hand, was much calmer, staring at the tightly closed study door with a worried expression.

"Bi Qiao, you stay here and watch over the princess. I'm going to check on the prince." She hesitated for a moment, as if she had made up her mind.

Bi Qiao nodded, "Don't worry, Granny, I will definitely protect the princess. I don't believe the Marquis of Yiguang's mansion would dare to harm the princess!"

Granny Zhuang breathed a sigh of relief and hurried away.

Inside the study, Zhao Shu personally poured tea for Jiang Huiji, saying, "Grandfather, please have some tea."

Jiang Huiji's expression was a mixture of sadness and joy, her eyes filled with both sorrow and delight.

The sadness comes from the fact that her daughter has been gone for many years, and the white-haired person has to bury the black-haired person. The joy comes from the fact that her granddaughter is gradually growing up. The sorrow comes from the fact that she failed to raise her daughter well, but she is helpless. The happiness comes from the fact that her granddaughter is well-behaved and sensible.

"The little girl has grown up. Were you scared just now?" he asked softly in a slightly deep voice.

Zhao Shu could tell that her grandfather's concern was genuine; he was truly worried about her.

Her bright eyes looked at Jiang Huiji, "Grandfather can call me Ajun. Ajun is my nickname. Only family members can call me that."

After all, she's not really a child; she's quite old, and being called a "little girl" is something she can't get over.

A simple sentence made Jiang Huiji's heart tighten, and her eyes reddened. Yes, they were family, blood relatives.

"Okay, Ah-Jun, tell your grandfather if he was frightened?" Her voice sounded choked, but she hid it well, almost imperceptibly.

Zhao Shu shook her head. "Grandfather, tell A-Jun about Mother Consort. A-Jun has never met Mother Consort since she was a child."

"My child, you've suffered so much."

Zhao Shuyi sat down as instructed. “Grandfather, Ah Jun is not suffering. Ah Jun still has her father, her grandmother, and you, her uncle and aunt.”

Jiang Hui nodded, took a deep breath, and forced down the bitterness in her heart. "You are as sensible and well-behaved as your mother."

“When your maternal grandmother was pregnant with your mother, everyone said it was going to be a boy, but it turned out to be a girl. I clearly remember the midwife saying, ‘This child is blessed; her voice is even louder than a boy’s.’”

It would be somewhat inappropriate to tell an unmarried girl that she is pregnant, but Jiang Huiji had kept some things to himself for many years and had never known who to tell them to. Now that it concerned Jiang Ying, it was most appropriate to tell Zhao Shu. There was no third person in the study, and facing his only granddaughter, his blood relative, he had no more reservations.

Upon hearing this, Zhao Shu couldn't help but imagine in her mind the old days when the Earl's family had no legitimate son. The Earl's wife had finally become pregnant, and everyone said it was a boy, but she gave birth to a girl. Moreover, the midwife said, "This child is blessed; her voice is even louder than a boy's."

Isn't that humiliating?

However, when talking about the past, the look of gratified reminiscence on Jiang Huiji's face was genuine; he truly loved this daughter, whom everyone had said was a boy before she was born.

There was no prejudice against him because he was not the legitimate son.

"As Ying'er grew up, she became even more unruly than boys. No one in the household could control her. When she was young, she was like a wild child from the streets, skilled at everything from catching fish in the river to climbing trees to steal bird nests. When she was almost of marriageable age, she changed into men's clothing and went out on her own, wanting to become a heroine. Your maternal grandmother found out and locked her in a room, assigning people to guard her. She pretended to be sick and even got the old woman guarding her to argue over three taels of silver. She took advantage of the chaos to escape from the capital."

Zhao Shu found her unconventional mother quite interesting. In her modern life, she had read many novels and watched many TV series. Girls with this kind of personality, as long as they were intelligent, would generally live a fulfilling life and find a good relationship.

Jiang Huiji recalled her daughter's past, and her smile seemed to be gilded. The love of a father and mother is the most selfless love in the world, which is awe-inspiring and touching.

Years have passed, and his daughter is no longer with him. All he remembers is the love and respect she showed him when she was around him, the carefree laughter in her eyes when she was playing around, and the local snacks she brought him from afar.

Back then, when his daughter played around, he would resort to family discipline; when she acted wildly, he would point his finger at her and curse her as an incorrigible brat.

But now, all he wants to say is the one thing he couldn't bring himself to say back then—"My father used family discipline on you, and he felt sorry for you when he pointed his finger at you and scolded you."

Father, it breaks my heart.

"Your mother spent a fortune to forge a precious sword in order to become a female knight-errant. She took a maid with her and went all the way to Hangu Pass. When I caught up with her at Hangu Pass, she offended a wealthy landowner there and beat his young son so badly that he was bedridden for half a year. The landowner filed a lawsuit against her in the government. Seeing that things were not going well, your mother fled at night and met the young master she had beaten on the way."

At this point, Jiang Suiji stroked his beard, his smugness evident in his eyes, "That young master was carried on a stretcher, determined to follow your mother into the world even if it meant his death, even if it meant working as a laborer at the docks."

Zhao Shu: ...She continued to imagine, was her mother really such a free and unrestrained person back then? In this world, wherever there are people, there is a world of martial arts and chivalry. What is the world of martial arts and chivalry?

The martial arts world is a group of people who strive to do their best in everything they do in pursuit of their ideals and goals. That's what the martial arts world is all about.
