There's a saying: "Those in a position should fulfill their duties."
Tonight is destined to be a sleepless night. Zhao Shu is someone who can't be at ease without seeing things, so she and Sun Yun took a chessboard and a Luomei Qin (a type of zither) to Chensong Courtyard to play chess with Prince Yong.
The gentle, melodious sound of the piano, like the babbling of a spring, drifted by. In the brightly lit room, everything was warm and inviting, like an old photograph taken at sunset, making one smile knowingly.
Suddenly, a scream pierced the night sky, the music stopped abruptly, and the hexagonal palace lantern, swaying in the wind, jumped irregularly a few times before going out with a "poof," leaving only the dim light emanating from the floor-standing red lanterns decorated with plum blossoms inside the room. In the darkness, the flame flickered inside the lanterns.
From Zhao Shu's perspective, the shadow of the flames resembled a slithering snake, ready to take a life at any moment.
The game was in disarray. Zhao Shu glanced down at the pieces on the board and realized that she only had three or two pieces left. She was going to lose this game.
Outside Chensong Courtyard, at least fifty men in black leaped in from various corners. They carried different weapons, making it impossible to tell who was the leader and who was the subordinate. All of them were dressed in black and blended into the vast night.
All the lanterns hanging around were extinguished by hidden weapons.
Suddenly, torches lit up the courtyard, the paths, the corridors, and the rooftops, instantly illuminating the dark Prince Yong's mansion as if it were daytime.
Countless soldiers clad in silver armor, like divine warriors descending from the sky, surrounded the fifty men in black in the courtyard.
These men in black, having made their way here without finding Zhao Shu or Prince Yong, nor Sun Yun or Madam Ma, headed towards Chensong Courtyard.
Mo Qin stood coldly at the entrance of Chensong Courtyard, leaning on his sword. In his left hand, he held several hollowed-out bamboo tubes. He tore off the black cloth covering the tubes, revealing fireflies inside, which were particularly conspicuous in the night.
All the men in black suddenly focused their attention on the bamboo tube in his hand. Mo Qin threw the bamboo tube, and it shattered with a clang in the air, sending countless fireflies flying into the night sky.
Meanwhile, the soldiers had already set up their crossbows. These were the most advanced military crossbows, capable of firing three arrows in succession, which Mo Qin had obtained from Peng Rui.
Peng Rui also trained a special forces unit of a thousand men, all of which he learned from Mo Qin. In gratitude, he shared many of the regular army's weapons with Mo Qin.
The men in black were surprised to find that the guards had crossbows. The guards of other princely mansions were all good-for-nothings. They had heard that the guards of Prince Yong's mansion were well-equipped and young, and were known as the Little Sharp Knives. But they never expected that they would be a group of soldiers who were obviously not good people.
Everyone is human. They were just bought from childhood to undergo rigorous training and walked out of piles of corpses. They don't have three heads and six arms. The soldiers, on the other hand, were selected young men with the best bones, the best condition, no diseases, and excellent physical fitness.
One in black, one in white; the assassins are demons living in the abyss, while the soldiers are young men raised in the sunlight. One is gloomy, the other sunny; one cannot bear the light, the other is confident and radiant.
"Fire!" Mo Qin shouted the order the moment the fireflies took flight. Instantly, all the arrows on the crossbows were fired at the same time, perfectly synchronized.
The fifty-odd men in black, surrounded, were forced to use their weapons to block the arrows. However, the arrows seemed to be coated with something, and when they collided with the weapons, they instantly ignited with green flames, like will-o'-the-wisps in a mass grave.
But the fire could burn their clothes, and it quickly surrounded the men in black. Before long, the entire courtyard was engulfed in flames.
Outside the Prince's Palace, a man in gray saw fireflies flying in the night sky, instantly mounted his horse, and headed straight for the city gate.
It was already curfew, and the city gates were closed, but when his horse rushed to the gate, the guards opened it without asking any questions. After the gate was opened, he spurred his horse away with a "Giddy up!"
Before long, the man in gray arrived at the camp outside the city. He dismounted and a soldier came to take his horse. He then removed his mask, revealing himself to be Hu Yichen.
Hu Yichen moved quickly and soon arrived outside Wei Tingsi's camp. From afar, he could hear Wei Caitao's furious voice, "You unfilial son who betrayed your ancestors!"
Wei Tingsi didn't speak, but Wei Caitao's voice trembled with anger. "Come back to the manor with me!" He said until his mouth was dry, but his unfilial son didn't even pour him a cup of tea. He was so angry that he was speechless and could only say this dry sentence.
"Which residence should we return to?" Wei Tingsi finally spoke, his tone icy and devoid of any emotion, like a puppet. Hu Yichen, however, gritted his teeth in anger, muttering to himself, 'This Master Wei is truly a scoundrel. What can he do besides forcing his son?'
However, he dared not say these words to Wei Tingsi's face. Whether he was called unfilial or a brute, no matter what others said about him or how Wei Zhongshi slandered and defamed him, Wei Caitao was his biological father, a fact that could be confirmed by his appearance.
"You unfilial son! Who taught you to speak to your father like that!" Wei Caitao had long lost his temper. He would often fly into a rage when facing his eldest son, throwing all pretense of gentleness and refinement to the wind.
Hearing this, Hu Yichen couldn't stand it any longer and raised his voice, "General, I have military intelligence to report."
With military matters at hand, even a father had to step aside, and Hu Yichen was quite pleased with his own wisdom.
Wei Tingsi glanced slowly at Wei Caitao, whose face was ashen with anger, and said calmly, "Come in."
Hu Yichen lifted the curtain and entered Wei Tingsi's private tent, clasped his hands and reported: "General, villains have infiltrated the Prince Yong's mansion and attempted to assassinate the Prince and the Princess!"
With a snap, Wei Tingsi broke the arrow in his hand with one hand. His face was cold to the bone. He glanced at Wei Caitao and said, "The capital is not peaceful tonight. It would be better for Father to stay in the camp."
