The courtyard of Physician Peng was filled with the strong aroma of medicine, as was the room where his medical books, medicine chest, clothes and luggage were kept.
The room was extremely simple: a bookshelf about the height of a person with a few ordinary medical books on it, a desk with writing brushes, ink, paper, and inkstones, an eight-immortal table with a few chairs, and a teapot and teacups on the eight-immortal table, but the tea had long since gone cold due to the freezing weather.
The brazier under the octagonal table was covered by a heavy, openwork copper lid, which was carved with intricate patterns and continuously emitted heat.
Zhao Shu signaled to Xiao Guozi to release Yang Quan. Xiao Guozi took out a dagger and untied the rope, revealing Yang Quan's head. His mouth was stuffed with a wad of cloth. Although he was not seriously injured from being thrown from the roof, he was in great pain. He was startled when he saw Zhao Shu.
"What? Afraid of me?" Zhao Shu approached him like a little devil, her lips slightly upturned, her shallow smile extremely cute. "I knew someone would be afraid of me." She said this to herself, "But I like it when people are afraid of me."
The old physician Peng, who was standing to the side, was completely confused. He whispered to Xiao Guozi, "Is this person one of the murderers who injured His Highness?"
Xiao Guozi hesitated for a moment and then nodded, "Yes, and he's the leader of the assassination squad, from the Yang family."
Upon hearing this, Physician Peng immediately glared and walked over to Yang Quan. He took out a small porcelain bottle from his sleeve, removed the cloth from Yang Quan's mouth without saying a word, pinched Yang Quan's mouth shut, pried open the bottle cap, and poured all the medicine from the small porcelain bottle into Yang Quan's mouth.
"Doctor Peng, what are you doing?" Xiao Guozi panicked and rushed over to stop him, but Zhao Shu stopped him and shook her head.
The medicine was poured into Yang Quan's mouth, and he immediately writhed on the ground in pain, his face contorted.
"Physician Peng, what poison did you give Yang Quan?" Xiao Guozi asked, his heart filled with worry. Princess Yang Quan was of great use, and she had even brought Guanzhou with her, which showed her importance. If she were poisoned to death by Physician Peng, wouldn't all their efforts have been in vain? You must know that serving Yang Quan and keeping her alive was extremely tiring. Yang Quan was tired, and so were they.
Old Physician Peng glared at him, his eyes wide with anger, and said, "Do you think I'm a beast? I don't have a black heart!"
Old Physician Peng roared fiercely, and Xiao Guozi took two steps back. He really couldn't afford to offend this ancestor.
Zhao Shu smiled and cleared up Xiao Guozi's doubts, "That's not poison, it's Coptis chinensis juice."
Feeling embarrassed, Xiao Guozi quickly apologized to Doctor Peng, "I misunderstood Doctor Peng, please don't take offense."
"Hmph, little brat, all you think about is killing and poison. Can't you stop being so bloodthirsty? Is there no other way to vent your anger besides killing?"
These words seemed to have a hidden meaning. Zhao Shu glanced at Xiao Guozi, who was scolded and dared not say a word. He stood there with his head down, his eyes fixed on Yang Quan, afraid that he would play some tricks. However, Yang Quan was so miserable that he almost forgot who he was, so how could he think of any tricks?
"Old Peng is right to teach me a lesson. I will definitely teach Xiao Guozi well, guide him to be good, get rid of the violence in his heart, and make him a good person. But where is the assassin that you asked General Peng for last time?" Zhao Shu lied without batting an eye.
Little Guozi, standing nearby, was ashamed. "Princess, when you get ruthless, you're more ruthless than anyone else, okay? And you're even guiding your servant to do good... Although I'm not exactly a kind person, if we're really talking about it, do you have as much kindness as I do, guiding me to do good?" He couldn't help but wonder if the sky was about to rain blood.
Zhao Shu was unaware of what Xiao Guozi was thinking. She just kept urging Physician Peng, who glared at Xiao Guozi several times before storming out.
After he left, Zhao Shu squatted down and whispered to Yang Quan, "How are you? Are you suffering? Is your heart bitter or your mouth bitter? You've been missing for a while now, but no one from the Yang family has ever come looking for you. A person without a name, without an identity, without family, without anything, without even a shadow, is truly pathetic."
Zhao Shu continued, not afraid that Yang Quan wouldn't listen, her tone full of pity and sympathy, "Do you know what the most terrible thing in this world is? It's dying silently, with no one knowing; returning home after a long day, with no one waiting for you by lamplight; achieving something, but not knowing who to share it with; feeling disappointed, with no one to comfort you; the grass on your grave growing again and again, but never being cleared. Do you know what that's called? That's called sorrow."
"Of course, you won't understand if I tell this to a suicide soldier, because you have no dignity, no pursuit, no life. Your life belongs to others, and your dignity belongs to others. You can't even be considered a human being; you're just a human shell."
Hearing her words, Yang Quan trembled with pain, yet he still glared at her angrily, "You witch! You think you're not pathetic? Hahaha, you're a hundred times more pathetic than me, and you think you have dignity? You think you have a life? You think you're a human being?"
His eyes were extremely contemptuous as he continued to vent his resentment and dissatisfaction, "At such a young age, you live like a demon from hell. Look at you, where is there even a trace of a noble lady? I am a death warrior, and I am sad, but you clearly have a noble birth and a life of luxury, yet you still live like a death warrior, neither human nor ghost!"
"How dare you!" Xiao Guozi kicked him. "How dare you speak to the princess like that? You're asking for trouble!"
"Kill me!" he cried out in agony.
Zhao Shu wasn't angry. It was good that he was so indignant, and she could make good use of him. "You're right. I am similar to you in many ways, but I have things that you will never have in your entire life. Of course, I don't need to compare myself to a death warrior."
