"Are you trying to see something amazing?" Yan Shiren put down the tattered book in his hand and looked directly at Yan Ruyu.
Yan Ruyu was startled. The kettle in her hand trembled, and water spilled onto the small table. Seeing that the water was about to flow onto the magnolia hairpin, she quickly put down the kettle and went to pick up the hairpin.
However, Yan Shiren acted even faster, and Yan Ruyu, unable to reach it, could only purse her lips and continue making tea.
"If you want it, it's not impossible." Yan Shiren fiddled with the hairpin, hesitating to speak.
"Father, you said it, your daughter would go through fire and water without hesitation!" Yan Ruyu immediately puffed out her chest and made a promise, displaying the tragic heroism of "The wind is howling and the Yi River is cold, the hero goes forth and never returns" and the generous spirit of "If I don't go to hell, who will?"
“Stop it! What young lady is as fickle as you? Look at that girl from the Qiu family, she’s so much more composed than you. I always lose face when I drink with that scoundrel from the Qiu family because of you!”
There's a kind of pain that comes from looking at so-and-so's child.
However, Yan Ruyu was not so easily defeated. She tilted her head in feigned dissatisfaction, "Hmph, Uncle Qiu might even envy you, Father, for having such a beautiful and talented little rascal."
"Look at her, look at her, who did she take after to have such a mouth!" Yan Shiren was amused by his daughter's 'self-praising' expression. He turned to his servant Yan Zhi and complained, but his eyes were full of smiles that he couldn't hide.
"Master, the young lady takes after you." The servant, unafraid of death, delivered the final blow from behind.
Yan Ruyu gave Yan Zhi a thumbs-up with a smug look, then reached out to snatch the hairpin from Yan Shiren's hand.
Yan Shiren deliberately let her take it, saying, "Take the hairpin to the Sun family and find Sun Liu."
"Yes, Father." Yan Ruyu put away her smug expression, carefully put the hairpin into her bosom, and respectfully served Yan Shiren a cup of tea.
"Go on, don't be late," Yan Shiren urged, taking the tea.
Yan Shiren lifted her skirt and climbed up the path, and soon left the waterside pavilion.
Watching her daughter leave, Yan Shi couldn't help but sigh, "She's too stubborn, what should I do?"
"The young lady is just like you, intelligent and quick-witted. This old servant thinks you don't need to worry too much," the servant said softly, bowing.
Yan Shiren glanced at him, picked up the tattered book again, and sighed deeply, "A daughter is like a tree that cannot be kept at home; keeping her will only lead to enmity."
