Chapter 42 Do you love me?

Zhao Shu was protected by Wei Tingsi and Xiao Guozi as she slowly walked over. With each step she took, her heart became more complicated. How could she have imagined that things would develop to this point?

She felt gratitude, affection, conflict, and anger towards Huo Danlan. She didn't believe that the kindness Huo Danlan had shown her in the past was fake.

But since we're destined to be enemies, why were they so kind to me in the first place? Were they trying to make me feel guilty?

In her past life, when she was powerless and confused, she knew nothing but that Gu Chongxuan had wronged her, Zhao Bi had not tolerated the Yongwang Mansion, and Lin Xiuxue had used her. Yet in this life, she still has to face such heart-wrenching hurt.

She thought she could live a perfect life.

Huo Danlan watched Zhao Shu approach step by step, her heart aching as if being trampled on with each step. The distance was not far, just a few steps away. Zhao Shu began to examine her, discovering that the bullets and hidden weapons had deviated from their vital organs. She removed them and said that they would be taken care of properly, as they would not be fatal.

“If there are no vital injuries, an ordinary imperial physician can treat it,” Zhao Shu said to Huo Baichuan.

He nodded gratefully, "Thank you." At that moment, he suddenly dared not hope for anything. If so many things hadn't happened in the beginning, perhaps there would still be hope. But he was wrong from the start, so what could he still hope for?

Seeing his sorrowful face, Zhao Shu suddenly felt like crying. He could have lived a carefree life, but he carried the burden of the price that Huo Danlan had to bear. He seemed unrestrained and unconventional, but he was actually so loyal and devoted.

If only he were a little more selfish, a little more stingy, a little more calculating, and a little less grateful, how wonderful that would be.

What a foolish person, yet God treated him so unfairly.

"No need to thank me. You saved me too, so consider this my way of repaying your life-saving grace," Zhao Shu said calmly. She didn't know what expression or emotion to use to express her anger at this matter.

Seeing the expressions on their faces, Huo Danlan suddenly felt embarrassed. With her last bit of strength, she picked up the matchlock gun that had fallen to the side and aimed it at Wei Tingsi.

The distance was too close; once the muzzle of the flintlock gun was extended, it would be within inches of Wei Tingsi.

"Go to hell!" she yelled, and fired the gun with a 'bang'.

The distance was too close, and even if she wanted to hide, she didn't know where to hide. Zhao Shu instinctively wanted to use her body to block, but Wei Tingsi pushed her away.

"No!" Zhao Shu only managed to utter one word before she was pushed next to Peng Rui. Peng Rui reacted quickly and pulled her behind him.

No one expected Huo Danlan to shoot Wei Tingsi. Even Huo Baichuan was stunned. But he was exceptionally clever and didn't lose his composure. Instead, he swiftly sidestepped and blocked the shot, the matchlock bullet piercing his body...

Zhao Shu turned around and looked nervously at Wei Tingsi, only to find him standing blankly in the crowd. "Wei Chang'an, Wei Chang'an..." Zhao Shu thought he had been hit and shouted in a daze.

Upon hearing Zhao Shu's voice, Wei Tingsi snapped out of his daze and looked at her, quickly saying, "I'm fine."

Zhao Shu wiped away her tears with her sleeve, weeping with joy. However, before she could be happy, she saw Huo Baichuan lying on the ground. His white bamboo robe, which was already stained with blood, was continuously soaked with blood. Blood flowed from his body, forming a pool of blood together with Uncle Fu's blood.

Zhao Shu opened her mouth, but couldn't speak. It felt as if something important had been scraped out of her heart, making her feel suffocated.

Huo Baichuan looked at her, a smile playing on his lips, a sense of relief washing over him.

Zhao Shu stared at him blankly, unable to hear his voice, only seeing his lip movements; he was calling her name.

"Bai Chuan, Bai Chuan, wait for me, wait for me! I will definitely save you!" Zhao Shu ran from behind Peng Rui to him and reached out to help him, but as soon as her hand touched him, it was covered in blood. She withdrew her hand in horror, but then wanted to help him again.

She now finally knows what it feels like to have no idea where to start.

"Don't cry." Huo Baichuan reached out and tugged at her sleeve. "You look terrible when you cry, really."

"Bai Chuan..." Zhao Shu finally found her voice and burst into tears, holding his hand and hugging him tightly. "Don't worry, I will definitely save you."

As she spoke, she began frantically pulling off his clothes, only to find that blood was gushing out of his chest, soon covering Zhao Shu's body.

"It's no use," he said weakly, without frustration or fear of death, just smiling at Zhao Shu as if he couldn't get enough of looking at her.

That last greedy glance made Zhao Shu break down so much that she wanted to empty her mind and have a good cry. It seemed that nothing could better release the sadness in her heart than crying.

Back then, I clearly swore I would never cry again.

"No, no, I can save you, I definitely can!" She tried to pick him up, but she couldn't lift him.

Wei Tingsi tried to step forward, but Yi De shouted, "No one is allowed to move! Anyone who moves will be killed!"

"Why don't you just die!" Zhao Shu suddenly turned around, her gaze icy, startling Yi De.

However, after her initial surprise, she felt more confident and fearless.

"No one is allowed to kill her, her life is mine!" Yi De hid behind the rebel army, and Zhao Shu couldn't kill her for the time being.

After Wei Tingsi processed the fact that he had been saved by Huo Baichuan, he made a few moves, and the next moment Peng Rui led his men to begin eliminating the rebels.

The rebels were well-trained. After killing many of the garrison soldiers and wounding many of Peng Rui's men, the Five Cities Garrison arrived and wiped them all out. Zhao Shu was surrounded by a group of people, while Wei Tingsi carried Huo Baichuan into the backyard.

"Xiao Guozi, go get my medicine box, and also, find some ice, a lot of it," Zhao Shu hurriedly ordered.

Whether by coincidence or not, they ended up at Sendai-in. Blood flowed along the way, and Huo Baichuan's gaze never left Zhao Shu, his face always bearing a smile.
