Chapter 1 Prologue

It's snowing again.

Zhao Shu put on the down jacket from the coat rack and went out.

It's so cold.

A biting north wind blew, making her shiver. The cold wind seeped into her down coat through her collar, chilling her to the bone.

In 2015, she had been here for twenty years since she came from ancient times. She clearly remembered that when she arrived here, this body was an abandoned orphan with no name and no parents.

But this is still much better than my previous life.

Twenty years have passed, but she still cannot forget the image of herself in her past life, kneeling in front of the South Gate, covered in blood.

And Hua Yao, who was cold in her arms, was only one year old that year and would sweetly call out "Mother".

Twenty years have passed, and her daughter Hua Yao must have been reincarnated and is no longer related to her unfit mother.

However, she could not forget that even after being reborn in this peaceful and prosperous era, she could not forget the overwhelming hatred in her heart.

"Shushu, why are you spacing out again?"

Whenever Ajiu called her that, her mind would immediately return to her senses; she had resisted this title for fifteen years.

Ajiu and she met at the orphanage. Ajiu was different from her; she was carefree all day long, which Zhao Shu greatly envied. She always looked at Ajiu like a daughter.

"Shushu, the holidays are coming soon. I'm planning to go back to the South. What about you?" Ajiu always considered herself a Southerner, even though she grew up in the North.

Perhaps, people will always have some kind of obsession, just as she always thinks of her daughter Hua Yao from her previous life, and A Jiu always thinks that she is a southerner.

"I found a part-time job, so I won't go." Zhao Shu smiled faintly, but in that smile, Ajiu always felt that Zhao Shu was actually a person who had experienced a lot of hardships. Her weariness was like the setting sun at dusk, making it hard for Ajiu to breathe.

Having received the expected answer, Ajiu changed the subject, "Okay, my beautiful lady, you'd better save your appetite, and when I come back, I'll make you the most delicious Southern dishes."

Ah Jiu is a foodie. Every time she goes to a new place, she has to learn the local specialty dishes before she's satisfied. She always says that being able to eat is a blessing. If she can't even eat, wouldn't she have lived in vain?

Zhao Shu thought this was nonsense, but over time, she was also influenced by it and began to only eat delicious food.

She's been spoiled rotten by Ajiu.

On the day Zhao Shu saw Ajiu off, she bought her a big bag of snacks, mostly puffed food. Ajiu thought that being fat was a symbol of good fortune, and she wanted a lot of good fortune too, but she had eaten puffed food for many years and still hadn't gained weight.

She would often cry secretly under the covers because of this; she was an unlucky child.

"Shushu, remember to eat, and don't stay out too late for work." These were Ajiu's last words as she got into the car. For some reason, she burst into tears after saying them, feeling as if it were a life-or-death separation.

Zhao Shu smiled faintly, waved her hand, and said into the wind, "Silly child, everyone needs to grow up."

Look, she seems to be looking at Hua Yao. If Hua Yao were still alive, she would probably be married and have children by now.

Standing in the cold wind for a long time, Zhao Shucai finally looked away, feeling empty inside. She realized that the child she had watched grow up was about to leave her.

With a loud "bang," Zhao Shu felt her body become incredibly light, and she heard, "Hello! Is this 120? This is Chongxing Road..."

The sound was intermittent, and she couldn't hear it clearly. Many images flew through her mind: modern times, ancient times, her days in the orphanage, her school days, the days of giving birth to Hua Yao...

That year, the pear blossoms in the outskirts of Beijing were in particularly good bloom. Like other young ladies from noble families, she invited a few close friends to go on a spring outing, imitating the behavior of talented women in books. There she met him, who seemed like the god of spring descended to earth.

A descendant of a century-old family, a scholar with the talent of a top scholar, handsome as spring, and dashing and romantic, he said: "My dear, I will never let you down in this life."

At that time, she was thirteen years old and Gu Chongxuan was fifteen. In the prime of their youth, they met each other at the best age, but it turned out to be nothing more than a huge joke.

She would never forget the day her father was stripped of his title and imprisoned. She knelt before him, humbly begging him to save her father's life. Her father was just an idle member of the imperial clan, with only her as his daughter, and not even a prince.

However, he was no longer the gentle husband he once was, but a cold stranger. He threw a letter of divorce on the ground and said, "Go, our marriage is over. From now on, we will go our separate ways and have nothing to do with each other!"

"Gu Chongxuan! We're even? You ruined my family and now you're telling me we're even?" She seemed unable to even cry anymore; her heart was shattered into pieces, beyond repair.

"You know your own reputation. Marrying you was just a temporary measure, out of pity. I am a capable minister, how could I marry a princess? You are the ones who have humiliated me! A daughter of the imperial family? I think she is not even as good as a shrew from the marketplace!"

"What are you trying to do? Aren't you afraid of having your entire family executed?" At that moment, she got up, but felt dizzy and her vision went black, and she fainted.

When he woke up, he found himself kneeling at the South Gate, along with Hua Yao, who was already lifeless in his arms.

“Zhao Shu, I have already had the clansmen remove you and your bastard from the family genealogy. In the future, the history books will not contain a single word about you.”

What did history say matter to her? All she wanted was for her daughter to live, to be alive... But her daughter died, while the enemy who killed Hua Yao was still alive and well.

How could this be! How could she let these people live!
