"Sister-in-law, I'll only stay for one day. I'll go back tomorrow after it's all cleaned up."
Bai Jiaojiao still needs to go back and make some desserts.
“You sisters can work a little less and it won’t matter if you do it for two days. Black dog blood is very evil, so don’t be careless.”
Deng Min is a typical traditional thinker; when it comes to such things, she'd rather believe it than not.
“This isn’t just our own business. Aren’t there other people’s orders? If I breach the contract and offend them, I won’t have such good business in the future.”
Bai Jiaojiao said.
Upon hearing this, Deng Min thought, "What could be more terrifying than poverty?"
So he changed his tune: "Then you go there during the day and come back to sleep at night. Your brother-in-law doesn't come home. Aren't you scared to be alone at night?"
"I'm not afraid."
“No way! There’s a new house being built right next to yours, it’s all dusty, it’s not good for people to live there all the time. Besides, there’s always Liu Ying and Zhang Ying, and you live at the foot of the mountain with no neighbors, it’s too dangerous. Luckily you ran into the village chief today, otherwise you would have been finished. You’d better come and stay at my house! I’ve never asked anything of you, but today, you have to listen to me.”
Deng Min was very determined, and she gripped Bai Jiaojiao's hand even tighter.
"Little sister, just listen to your sister-in-law, she's right."
Bai Shibao said so.
"Dad is definitely worried about you too. If you don't agree, my family will go and talk to him!"
Since Deng Min had already put it that way, Bai Jiaojiao had no choice but to agree: "Then I'll come back to sleep tonight, but I still have to go back during the day."
"OK."
The two compromised, thus reaching an agreement.
Bai Zhiman was so frightened by Bai Jiaojiao's shouts outside that he couldn't sleep. He was pacing back and forth in his wheelchair at the door when he heard someone talking. He immediately asked, "Is Jiaojiao alright at home? Has she hurt anyone?"
"I'm fine, Dad."
Bai Jiaojiao quickened her pace and walked up to Bai Zhiman.
Bai Zhiman looked Bai Jiaojiao up and down and said, "Come inside quickly."
Blood is thicker than water. No matter how much Bai Zhi pretended not to care and said that Bai Jiaojiao was not his child, he still cared about her in his heart.
The four entered the house. Bai Shibao went back to his room to pack his bedding, while Bai Jiaojiao sat by Bai Zhiman's kang (a heated brick bed) and, under Bai Zhiman's questioning, recounted the details of the evening.
"That's the right thing to do. She didn't want to live anyway, letting her die would be too good for her."
Bai Zhiman rubbed his thighs, whose muscles had atrophied: "We have to be wary of Yu Wenli in the future. Your sister-in-law did the right thing. Your son-in-law isn't home right now, so it's right for you to come back to sleep. It's best not to go back during the day either. Wait until the new house next door is finished and we change the entrance before you go back to live there."
"It's alright, Dad."
"There's plenty of time to earn money. My main concern is your safety there!"
It took Bai Jiaojiao a lot of persuasion before she finally reached an agreement with Bai Zhiman.
Bai Jiaojiao moved back into the Bai family home, feeling somewhat sentimental.
In the past, when she lived in this house, she was bossy and domineering towards the Bai family, and she was also treated coldly by them.
Now everything has changed. Her father and her brothers and sisters are all willing to care about her. She never experienced this kind of family atmosphere at her adoptive parents' home.
Being reborn was truly worth it.
Bai Jiaojiao told Deng Min before going to bed that she should wake her up the next morning.
Bai Jiaojiao was used to sleeping in late and was afraid she wouldn't be able to get Liu Ying to her destination in time tomorrow.
She didn't want to personally bring Liu Ying to justice; she just wanted Li Lide and the other villagers to go with her to the net rope factory to see why the factory refused to continue cooperating with their village.
If Li Lide really was behind it all, then his time as village chief is over.
After all, what kind of village head is someone who openly harms the collective interests? How can he truly work for the people?
Bai Jiaojiao changed locations and was frightened, so she couldn't sleep all night. In her hazy state, she seemed to dream of Shen Heng. Just as she was about to say something to him, she became fully conscious again.
Bai Jiaojiao heard Bai Shihai return, and she also knew when Bai Shibao left. She woke up on her own in the morning without waiting for Deng Min to call her.
"Hey little sister, I've parked your bicycle at the door, you can ride it."
To make it easier for Bai Shibao to travel back and forth in town, Bai Jiaojiao lent him her bicycle in the morning.
"No need, the brigade that sent Liu Ying will definitely take an oxcart. I'll just go with everyone else."
After having breakfast, Bai Jiaojiao just managed to catch up with the group taking Liu Ying to the police station.
Li Shuxian was still driving the cart. Bai Shiqing originally wanted to go with them, as she wouldn't feel at ease until she got Liu Ying inside. However, when she saw Bai Jiaojiao arrive and there wasn't enough room on the oxcart, she decided not to go.
Li Lide was also there, along with Zheng Xu and the village's women's director. Liu Ying was tied up in the car, and the way she looked at Bai Jiaojiao was as if she wanted to skin her alive.
"You're going too?" Li Lide knew something bad was going to happen when he saw Bai Jiaojiao.
"Village chief, I'm the person involved. How can you report a case without me?"
"Jiaojiao, come up here." Zheng Xu moved to the side, making room for Bai Jiaojiao between himself and the women's director.
The women's director is Zhou Hongxia, who is almost fifty years old. Both her maternal and paternal families are from the same village. Her husband and Li Lide are related by marriage.
He was quite straightforward: "Come sit between us, let our brigade leader sit next to her, so that this person won't go crazy and scratch you again."
Bai Jiaojiao was pulled between Zhou Hongxia and Zheng Xu. She glanced at Liu Ying and then looked away.
“The fact that this happened to the women in the village is also because I didn’t do my job well. Last time you helped the women in our village get such a good job, I was so happy that I forgot to give them a warning. That’s why some of them have bad ideas and have become ungrateful.”
