Shen Heng didn't have the habit of taking a nap at noon, but Bai Jiaojiao dragged him onto the kang (a heated brick bed).
Bai Jiaojiao lay down beside him, snuggling against Shen Heng's arm, and grabbed his large hands with both of hers: "Heng-ge, go to sleep. I'll wake you up in a bit."
Shen Heng was so agitated that he couldn't calm down, let alone fall asleep.
He rolled over and hugged Bai Jiaojiao tightly, as if that would allow him to vent his anger.
Bai Jiaojiao leaned against Shen Heng's chest, smiled with pursed lips, and put her hand on his waist.
Chen Heng spent the whole afternoon with a restless mind, staring at the roof beams.
If he had to say something, he could only say... this feeling isn't bad.
She had promised to call him Bai Jiaojiao, but she didn't wake up until the afternoon work bell rang.
When Bai Jiaojiao opened her eyes, Shen Heng had already gotten off the kang (heated brick bed).
"Go to sleep, I'll take care of the work in the fields for you."
Shen Heng looked at Bai Jiaojiao, who seemed to have had too much sleep, and felt a pang of pity for her.
Bai Jiaojiao rubbed her eyes and went to work.
After all, the suffering has already been halfway through, and we can't give up halfway.
When she arrived at the field, she found that Shen Heng had almost finished her work that morning.
The remaining bit was clearly something Shen Heng had deliberately left for Bai Jiaojiao to dawdle over.
Looking at her own land, which still had more than half of its original area, Liu Ying's eyes were red with envy.
Seeing the smile on Bai Jiaojiao's face, he couldn't help but say, "You're shameless to let others do your work."
Bai Jiaojiao felt like a toad had crawled on her foot; her good mood was completely ruined.
“What’s wrong with my man helping me with the work? Are you jealous? Get Yu Wenli to help you too.”
Bai Jiaojiao retorted sharply, leaving Liu Ying both anxious and angry, yet speechless.
Yu Wenli can't even finish his own work, let alone help her.
What made Liu Ying even more uneasy was that when she spoke to Yu Wenli at the educated youth center at noon today, Yu Wenli ignored her.
Liu Ying had a bad feeling.
Bai Jiaojiao didn't want to say anything more to Liu Ying, lest she lower her own value.
She easily finished the work in the fields and went back to cook for Shen Heng.
Her task was to raise Shen Heng to be plump and healthy, cough, no, to be strong and robust.
When Shen Heng came home from work in the evening and saw the hot meal and the people eagerly waiting for him to come home, he seemed to understand a little why everyone wanted to get married.
.
"Attention all members of Hushan Commune! Attention all members of Hushan Commune! The weather forecast predicts heavy seasonal rains in five days. All production brigades are requested to organize their members to harvest the wheat fields as soon as possible! Attention all members of Hushan Commune..."
Before dawn, everyone was woken up by the wired loudspeaker.
“It’s raining again during the wheat harvest this year,” Shen Heng said, not yet realizing the seriousness of the problem. He just felt that the harvest was too rushed and told Bai Jiaojiao, “It’s okay, you can continue sleeping, don’t worry about it.”
It's only three o'clock now, the dogs haven't even had time to sleep yet, and every household has already turned on their lights.
Bai Jiaojiao yawned and sat up with her eyes closed.
Shen Heng pinched Bai Jiaojiao's cheek: "If you're not fully awake, keep sleeping."
"No, didn't you hear it's a rush harvest? Let's go together." Bai Jiaojiao got off the kang in one go, feeling much more awake.
Why are you going through all this trouble?
Shen Heng was so angry that he put his hands on his hips when he saw that Bai Jiaojiao was disobedient.
While tying her hair in braids, Bai Jiaojiao asked, "Brother Heng, have you finished that handle?"
"Once it's done, how could I dare not do what you ordered me to do?"
Despite Shen Heng's sarcastic tone, Bai Jiaojiao wasn't angry. As she walked out, she asked, "Are both of them ready?"
Shen Heng went to the woodshed and brought back two handles. Bai Jiaojiao picked them up and tried them out; the quality was good.
Is this okay?
Shen Heng leaned against the door, waiting for Bai Jiaojiao's inspection.
"That's really impressive, Heng-ge is amazing! All that's missing is my third brother bringing razor blades!"
Bai Jiaojiao was very excited. With this, Shen Heng and her older brother might even be awarded the title of model worker!
Seeing Bai Jiaojiao's bright eyes, Shen Heng's lips unconsciously curled into a smile: "Silly girl. Wear a hat this time, or you'll be in trouble when it's light."
Bai Jiaojiao knew she wouldn't have time for breakfast today, so she specially kept two pancakes warm in the pan last night.
It's hot now, so eating something cold isn't a problem. She and Shen Heng each took one to the meeting.
The entire village huddled together, their heads bobbing in the pitch-black night.
There's hardly any rest time during the harvest season; aside from sleeping, we spend almost all our time in the fields.
To make the division of labor easier, each family is assigned a plot of land. This way, only one person from each family needs to come out for meals, while the others stay in the field to work. This arrangement is convenient.
There were only two of them, Shen Heng and Bai Jiaojiao. When the captain divided them into groups, he said to Bai Jiaojiao, "You two go with your family."
Bai Jiaojiao's mother died in childbirth. If it weren't for the chaos, Bai Jiaojiao wouldn't have been switched at birth.
Bai's father was a retired soldier who made a lot of money pushing stones on the mountain a few years ago, but he was injured by a stone and now he can only lie paralyzed on the kang (a heated brick bed).
The third son of the Bai family was an apprentice in town, so the only able-bodied members of the Bai family were the eldest brother Bai Shihai, his sister-in-law Deng Min, and the second sister Bai Shiqing.
If you put Shen Heng, Bai Jiaojiao, and the other three in one group, their labor force wouldn't be enough to support a three-generation family.
Bai Jiaojiao led Shen Heng toward Bai Shihai, calling out, "Big brother, sister-in-law."
Bai Shihai was wearing a discarded work uniform from the town's shipyard, which looked fairly presentable in the crowd. Deng Min had a low braid, a kind face, and very beautiful double eyelids.
Bai Shiqing wasn't there; she must be at home tidying up.
