Su Yangang was indeed filled with mixed feelings after hearing Bai Jiaojiao's words.
"Xiao Guan, what they said is right. I'm the one who let Zhi Gao down."
Su Yangang put down his chopsticks and looked at the taciturn Su Zhigao, saying, "Don't worry, with your father around, you'll never have to live a hard life again. I'll make it up to you."
Su Zhigao glanced at Su Yangang, seemingly understanding but not quite: "Are you going to take me away?"
"Of course, Zhigao, will you come with me? When we get there, there will be lots of kids to play with."
Su Yangang is now receiving very good treatment. The military has settled him in a house in the county, right in the military compound. The people living there are all military personnel and their families, and their basic quality is quite high.
Bai Jiaojiao then asked, "Brother Su, after you take Su Zhigao there, he'll need to train regularly, right? What will you do if there's no one at home to take care of him?"
Su Yangang paused for a moment: "There are many military family members over there who don't have jobs. Whether they take care of one child or two, it's the same to them. Giving them some money as a subsidy and asking them to take care of the children is no problem. It also gives the children some company."
Su Yangang's solution is not bad.
Bai Jiaojiao didn't want to interfere in Su Yangang's future family affairs. Since he had plans, she stopped asking.
Su Zhigao seemed to know that he would definitely be taken away, and he started wiping away tears at the dinner table.
"You're not allowed to eat when you're crying."
Bai Jiaojiao was afraid that Su Zhigao would choke, so she quickly pressed down on Su Zhigao's chopsticks.
Su Zhigao cried even harder.
He's been at our house for so many days, and he's never cried like this before.
Bai Jiaojiao felt sorry for him, but still said, "Zhigao, don't you want a father? No matter how good your Uncle Heng and I are, we're still outsiders. Other kids have fathers, don't you want one too?"
Su Zhigao did take Bai Jiaojiao's words to heart.
"Your father is now a great hero of the people. Look at his military uniform. Shouldn't you be proud of him?"
Following Bai Jiaojiao's words, Su Zhigao looked at Su Yangang.
Su Yangang straightened his back without making a sound, while Su Zhigao sniffed: "Are you a great hero?"
Su Yangang couldn't bring himself to admit he was a great hero. He braced himself on his thighs and carefully prepared his words: "Your father is a member of the People's Liberation Army, the most glorious person ever!"
Su Zhigao then stopped crying.
"Then you go back with your dad, and you'll be a little People's Liberation Army soldier, right?"
After Bai Jiaojiao finished asking her question, she saw Su Zhigao nod.
"You must take your father as your role model from now on; you will be a great hero too!"
Su Zhigao nodded again, almost tacitly agreeing to go with Su Yangang.
Su Yangang felt incredibly relieved.
"Thank you so much, sister."
Su Yangang thanked her again. He had thanked Bai Jiaojiao for taking care of Su Zhigao earlier, but this time he thanked her for her silver tongue, which had tricked Su Zhigao into a limp state with just a few words.
If you've ever attended a basic literacy class, you wouldn't be so easily fooled!
Su Yangang thought to himself that he definitely had to help Bai Jiaojiao in some way.
He looked at Shen Heng and asked, "Shen Heng, do you want to join the army?"
Upon hearing this, Shen Heng realized that he was also involved in the matter.
"I'm not going!"
He's just bored out of his mind. Why doesn't he spend that time at home cuddling his wife instead of going through all that trouble?
However, being a soldier is indeed an honorable profession, and no matter how dissatisfied Shen Heng was, he kept his complaints to himself.
Su Yangang was a little embarrassed, but Bai Jiaojiao smoothed things over for him: "Brother Su, you should know what kind of person my Heng is. There are many rules in the army, and it's hard for him to stand them."
Bai Jiaojiao's words made Su Yan's expression soften slightly: "It's nothing. I just thought he was strong and healthy. If he went to the army for training, he might have a bright future."
Bai Jiaojiao exchanged a few polite words with him, and then the matter was dropped and never mentioned again.
After they had eaten and drunk their fill on the kang (heated brick bed), the three people in the main hall couldn't sit still any longer.
At first, the two brothers, Su Yahu and Su Yalong, were discussing how to get Su Yangang to make an exception for them, but as they talked, they started to shift the blame onto each other.
"It's all your fault! You should have brought the police with you. You were afraid they'd renege on their promises and refuse to pay, so you brought this hot potato with you. Now look what happened, we've caught them red-handed!"
Su Yahu regretted it a little. If they had brought the police with them today, they could have turned the tables and accused Bai Jiaojiao of stealing their child.
"Second brother, isn't it too late for you to blame me now? Didn't you agree to all of this? You betrayed me in front of eldest brother just now, and I haven't even come to your defense yet! He's a hot potato, and who contacted this hot potato? Wasn't it you!"
Su Yalong was also furious. He was really panicking and didn't know what to do, so he vented his anger and anxiety without trying to appease Su Yahu.
When Skinny Monkey heard the two brothers cursing him, he was annoyed: "Damn it, I'm really unlucky to have gotten involved with you two. Let me tell you, I've done my job cleanly. I won't get into trouble even if I end up in the police station. You two, humph, you think your big brother will let you off the hook? Just wait until you've rotted in jail!"
The three started arguing. Because they were tied back to back, their hands could reach each other, and they ended up pinching each other's hands until they left crescent-shaped marks.
"What are you all arguing about? Don't rush, I'll take you to the town police station in a bit. Save your energy and talk to the comrades inside!" Xiao Guan casually ate a couple of bites of food at the table and then came out. The people in the main hall were too noisy, and she had to come and maintain order. Otherwise, what would happen if her leader couldn't get a proper rest?
In the afternoon, despite his injuries, Su Yangang insisted on personally taking his two younger brothers to the police station. He even brought a suicide note, intending to confront his two younger siblings and settle the matter in person when they arrived.
